About Us
I am a member of the British Acupuncture Council and have over ten years of experience treating a wide range of conditions. From very early on in my career I realized how amazingly effective acupuncture can be. Over time I have become ever more confident of its power to treat many conditions. Because of this, acupuncture and some of its associated techniques, such as moxibustion and cupping, are my sole means of treatment.

I strongly believe in trying to get you better in as few treatments as possible. I like to be able to give you more power and control over your own condition, where appropriate, by showing self-acupressure techniques or suggesting appropriate dietary and lifestyle changes. Most people find this extremely helpful and are frequently amazed at the improvements that they themselves can achieve relatively simply.

I do not see acupuncture as an alternative medicine, rather it fills the gaps that many people fall into where they cannot be adequately treated with conventional medicine. If I believe that you have a serious undiagnosed condition then I will recommend that you seek appropriate medical advice. Likewise, where acupuncture is not the best form of treatment for you then I will suggest alternatives.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture as its name implies involves the piercing of the skin with fine needles in order to treat disease. Traditionally the Chinese believed that a person only became ill if his vital energy (qi) became depleted or imbalanced. Qi pervades the universe and our own bodies flowing in a system of meridians beneath the skin (see diagram). To restore health it is important to keep the flow of qi even within these meridians – this can be done by inserting acupuncture needles into points of relative excess or deficiency on the meridian lines.

Symptom control methods of treatment are also sometimes necessary and sometimes this is often as simple as placing a needle in an area close to or related to that of the problem (eg back ache - needle the painful spots on the back)

Conditions Treated

Traditional acupuncture aims to treat the root causes of a disease or ailment. This is achieved by assessing each individual to determine which imbalances are present that cause or exacerbate the more superficial expression (or branch) which is normally a painful, uncomfortable, or otherwise distressing symptom. The assessment is then followed up with appropriate treatment to correct the imbalance. At the same time symptoms are addressed more directly - this is often as simple as placing a needle on or around a painful area.

One of the many benefits of acupuncture is that multiple ailments often respond at the same time (as a result of attending to the underlying imbalances. In this way a wide variety of conditions can be treated.

The World Health Organisation has recognised that acupuncture has been proven effective for many conditions. Listed below are just some of the most common ones:

  • Headache, Migraine, Facial pain, Dental Pain, TMJD, Allergic Rhinitis
  • Neck Pain, tennis elbow, Periarthritis of the shoulder, Low Back Pain, Knee Pain, Sciatica
  • Nausea, Vomiting, Some other stomach problems, Dysentery
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis,
  • Post operative pain
  • Some menstrual disorders, Malposition of fetus, morning sickness

QUALIFICATION DETAILS
I have been practicing acupuncture since qualifying in 2001 at the Northern College of Acupuncture in York. My qualification was in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) style acupuncture. Over the years I have become more interested in Japanese forms of acupuncture and have studied a number of these extensively. They are extremely gentle, subtle and highly effective methods of treatment . They include the following:
  • Manaka style;
  • Kiiko Matsumoto style;
  • Meridian Therapy (in particular the Toyohari style),
  • Shonishin (childrens treatment)/li>
Each of these styles has improved my knowledge and understanding in different ways giving me a wide range of techniques to choose from.
