What’s Special About Yoga?

Yoga has been with us for thousands of years and its longevity is testament to its transformative power.
The human body is a fascinating and complex form, consisting of various layers. Through the practice of mindful Yoga we can increase our knowledge and ability to feel these different layers, from the bones, muscles and connective tissue to our energy, emotions and our breath.

What sets Yoga apart from other forms of exercise such as Pilates, is that we strive to engage our mind throughout the practice, linking our mental focus with the movement of our body through our breathing. Simply by drawing your over-active mind away from daily thought processes you not only increase the effects of the practice on your physical body, but you centre and calm your mind as well……what could be better?

Among the benefits that a regular Yoga class will promote:
  • Increased energy
  • Build core strength and stability
  • Calm and centre for stress and anxiety
  • Build muscle strength, tone and flexibility
  • Stimulate connective tissue
  • Strengthen the immune system
  • Improve posture and alignment
  • Build a strong, supple, pain free back
Why Choose Yoga with Julia Thornton?

My interest and passion for Yoga lies in its ability to heal and nurture, as well as to strengthen.
I teach a fusion of what I consider to be the very best, safest and most constructive poses from many different Yoga traditions including the attention to alignment of Iyengar, the grace and energy of Vinyasa Flow, the principles of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, the strength of Power as well as the restorative deep healing of Yin Yoga.

My classes are balanced to incorporate work that challenges you, work that focuses you, and work that restores, encouraging a balance between ‘doing’ and ‘being’.

My teaching style is inclusive, placing emphasis on adapting postures to suit individuals, guiding students ultimately to a safer, stronger and more compassionate practice.

Among the styles that I teach are:

Yoga For Life!:-A mixed Yoga class drawn from various styles of Hatha [physical Yoga practice] yoga. Poses are sequenced for maximum benefit to the physical, mental and energetic layers of the body and include balance work, core strengthening, flowing sequences or vinyasa, yin yoga for opening and creating flexibility and heart-opening back bends, all yoked with essential breathwork. Pranayama, meditation and relaxation are also included, making this the ultimate in a well-balanced Yoga class!

Restorative Yoga: -Aimed at balancing and restoring, nurturing the body’s own natural ability to heal itself. Classes combine some movement and joint integrity work with more passive stretches based in the ancient Chinese Yin Yoga tradition, encouraging deep muscle, fascia, passive organ and nervous system restoration. Great for combining with more active Yoga styles or gym work.

Yin Yoga:- This style of Yoga is not overtly popular here in the West, but ironically it is what many Westerners need! Yin encourages us to slow things down. Postures are prepared with care and then held for several minutes, encouraging the muscle body to disengage where possible thereby enabling the connective tissue to open and release. Increased stimulation of this tissue layer promotes healing around the joints. Yin Yoga also encourages hormonal balance, rejuvenates the organs of the body and can be particularly beneficial for people suffering with low energy or any degree of adrenal fatigue.

Private 1-2-1:-If you have a specific problem, are recovering from surgery or injury, or simply want to explore the more traditional way to learn Yoga, I offer one on one hour long sessions. Please get in touch to find out if this might benefit you.

About Julia:

I have been a practitioner of Yoga for 16 years. I was fortunate to be introduced to this beautiful practice by my teacher, Simon Low, renowned UK Yogi and co-founder of TriYoga in London.

Throughout my life I have found Yoga to be a tremendously useful tool; it helps me deal with stress, emotional turmoil and life’s ups and downs, keeps my body both strong and flexible, develops and maintains core stability and gives me a sense of inner calm and happiness.

I trained with the Yoga Academy, recognized as one of the top Yoga teacher training schools in the UK. The school promotes in depth knowledge of postures with the primary focus being on safety and alignment.

I have studied with Gary Carter (who worked with Thomas Myers on the Anatomy Trains concept), Gill Lloyd (who works and studies with T.K.V. Desikachar), Simona Hernandez, andJulie Gudmestad, a trained Iyengar Yoga teacher and a Physiotherapist in the US for the past 31 years.
