About Me

.

It is perfectly natural to feel anxious about seeing a Counsellor for the first time. Like any other relationship, trust takes time to build. Hopefully you will find me warm, non-judgemental and approachable. This initial session is a good opportunity for you to get a sense of whether you would like to work with me and if you feel I am the right Therapist for you. This session will be used to explore what you want from Therapy and to see if you feel I can help you. It is really important you feel comfortable with me. Sessions are usually weekly and last 1 hour. You may prefer to have a fixed time and day for us to meet.

WHAT IS GESTALT PSYCHOTHERAPY?

Gestalt therapy is an experiential and mindfulness-based approach to counselling and psychotherapy. Gestalt roughly translated means ‘whole’, incorporating all of us including our body, emotions, sensations, thoughts, perceptions and experiences.
All these aspects represent the ‘whole’ person that we are. A core concept of Gestalt therapy is that we 'creatively adjust' or adapt to our life experiences. This means we may develop habits or behaviours that are out of our awareness.
This can affect our ability to function effectively and may prevent us from fully experiencing and enjoying our lives. The main focus of Gestalt Psychotherapy is to increase awareness. As our awareness of ourselves is increased, we develop a deeper understanding of ourselves, and how we relate in the world and with others.
Awareness is ongoing. When we deepen our awareness we begin to recognise ourselves more fully and to accept our potential within us for change. The objective is to become aware of what we do and how we are choosing to do it, with acceptance, without judgement and with kindness to ourselves and others.

WHAT IS MINDFULNESS?
Mindfulness (or awareness) is a mind-body approach to well-being that can help you change the way you think about experiences and reduce stress and anxiety.
Often we can’t move on from the past or live in fear of the future. Mindfulness helps us to experience being here in the present.
Using techniques gained from my training on Mindfulness Based Stress reduction (MBSR) and from the work of Russ Harris author of “The Happiness Trap”, we can develop our ability to deal with the effect of painful thoughts and feelings and reduce the stress and anxiety inherent in modern life.
According to Jon Kabat-Zinn , "mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and non judgmentally."

Alongside my Private practice, I provide a Counselling and Supervision service to a local Drug and Alcohol agency and I am also registered as an affiliate Counsellor for EAP agency work and as an affiliate therapist with Anxiety UK.
