Massage has many meanings to different people. To me it is giving a person the opportunity to be relaxed, de-stressed and pampered, to give relief from muscle tension and fatigue, to give someone one-to-one attention focusing on that person and that person alone. This undivided attention is something many of us are missing in today’s demanding and often hectic lifestyle.

Welcome to therapeutic massage, come and see for yourself.

Why we Need Massage

In today’s world of hectic schedules, demanding family commitments and late nights, the ideal counterbalance is a therapeutic massage to ease the body and clear the mind.

Aggravated muscle tension is caused predominately by everyday working practices such as driving, using keyboards, holding the telephone receiver between your chin and shoulder, lifting heavy objects/children.

Many of these activities repeatedly use a similar set of muscles that can become overexerted, and over time, cause discomfort, irritation and sometimes pain. No wonder that after a while our bodies say ‘enough’. Massage, even in its simplest form, can considerably reduce the effects of stress and muscle tension build up.

How often have you rubbed your neck or back looking for a little relief? Regular massage by a qualified practitioner helps to reduce the effects of this tension and with regular exercise assists in keeping our bodies fit and healthy.

Massage during pregnancy can be beneficial in helping the expectant mother to cope with the dramatic changes her body is experiencing. It aids relaxation, relieves back pain and tired legs all of which help maintain healthy blood pressure.

It also promotes a general feeling of rest and wellbeing.

A Little History and Background

Massage has been used for centuries to help cure minor ailments, insomnia, aid relaxation, pain relief and improve muscle tone. There is evidence that the Chinese used a form of massage 5000 years ago. The Hindus, Japanese and Egyptians all practised their own variations of massage too. In 380 BC Hippocrates wrote, “A physician must be experienced in many things but assuredly also in rubbing“. Many people believe the current popularity of alternative medicine is a new form of healthcare, but it has in fact been part of our lives for thousands of years.

Swedish massage is based on the techniques perfected by Per Henrik Ling in the early 19th century. His principles are now widely used throughout the West. The method uses a series of different strokes, vibrations and pressures on the body to ease tension and increase circulation by stimulating the cardiovascular and nervous systems.

This stimulation greatly increases the removal of waste products (primarily urea and lactic acid) produced by all muscles during everyday activity. It is these waste products which can occasionally build up in certain areas e.g. the shoulders, neck, lower back regions causing reduced mobility, stiffness and, in extreme cases, discomfort and pain. By massaging affected areas and increasing blood flow you enable the body to help heal itself.

Infant Massage

Massaging babies is not a new fad, it has, in fact been happening all over the world for centuries – it is only in the Western societies that touch in this form has been sadly forgotten.

What better way to show your love and nurture your baby and growing child than to offer them the enormous benefits of touch with a gentle massage.

Our skin is the largest and most sensitive organ of our body and touch is the first of our senses to develop in the womb ”Touch is the parent of our eyes, ears, nose and mouth”. It is a baby’s primary source of information about their new environment.

As parents we have an inbuilt desire to protect, adore, cuddle and touch our children and infant massage is the most wonderful way to extend that natural instinct and enable us to better understand the silent language of our babies.

They tell us all we need to know, we just need to learn to decipher their cues to understand their language.

IAIM Mission Statement

The purpose of the International Association of Infant Massage is to promote nurturing touch and communication through training, education and research so that parents, caregivers and children are loved, valued and respected throughout the world community.

A Little History

The International Association of Infant Massage, (IAIM), was founded by Vilama McClure in America in 1976. Her book “Infant Massage, a handbook for loving parents” was first published in 1978. During a work placement in India she worked in an orphanage and saw on a daily basis how the local people massaged their children and the enormous benefits this seemed to have. On having her own children she began practising on them and in doing so created the course taught today. She put together different strokes and methods noting the results and researching the effects of increased bonding on the infants in her classes. The IAIM has grown into a worldwide organisation since it’s inception in 1976. The course incorporates strokes taken from Indian and Swedish massage, reflexology and yoga, which Vilama taught for 10 years.

QUALIFICATION DETAILS

I am a fully qualified massage therapist, trained at the Claire Maxwell-Hudson School of Massage. Upon seeing the amazing benefits of massage on adults I became interested in Infant Massage and decided to train as a parent instructor before my daughter was born in 2001, and am now a Certified Infant Massage Instructor, with the International Association of Infant Massage. Clare Maxwell-Hudson is a leading authority on, and has written several books about massage. She has been practising for over 30 years. During this time she has been instrumental in reintroducing massage to the NHS. As part of the course her students are sent to various forward-thinking hospitals to complete their training. I was sent to Charing Cross Hospital to the Oncology (Cancer) Ward. It was so rewarding to see the effect simple foot and back massages had on patients and the feedback they gave on the comfort of one-on-one therapy and the way it helped them relax was wonderful. I very much look forward to offering you the benefit of my experience and being able to show you the positive benefits of massage.
  • ITEC diploma in anatomy physiology and Body Massage August 1999
  • Clare Maxwell-Hudson school of massage diploma in Swedish Massage August 1999.
  • Certified Infant Massage Instructor trained by the International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM) September 2002.
  • My USP for massage is that I offer day and evening appointments for clients. Been practising for 11 years and am known for giving an excellent treatment and not being shy about applying deep pressure when required for areas of tension.
  • For baby massage, I offer teaching to small groups of parents in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. I also offer to teach in parents houses if they wish to gather a small group of friends which works well in rural areas.
