What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is the third largest health profession in the world and the largest drugless health profession in the world. It is safe, gentle and constantly progressing form of health care.

Chiropractic is based around the fact that the human being has an innate (inborn) ability to self heal. Self healing relies on many important body responses, all of which are directed by the nervous system.

Interferences to the nervous system contained within the skull, spine and pelvis disturb this self healing and self regulating ability of people. This leads to a decline in overall health, and if left long enough, often noticeable signs and symptoms.

Key principles of chiropractic:
  • Chiropractic care does not involve drugs or surgical procedures
  • Chiropractic draws on the way that the body heals and regulates itself
  • The brain, spinal cord and nervous system control the self-healing and self-regulatory actions of the body
  • The skull and spine protect the delicate nervous system but can also be a source of interference to the nervous system
  • Interference with the nervous system limits the ability to live a full, healthy life

The benefits of chiropractic care:
  • Improved function of the body's organs and systems
  • Greater energy and vitality
  • Greater flexibility, movement and muscle function
  • Improved ability to deal with stress
  • Improvement in many symptoms, including headache and sciatica (leg pain)
  • Stronger immune resistance
  • Better quality sleep and enhanced concentration
  • Improved posture
  • Reduced spinal degeneration or osteoarthritis
  • Reduced incidence of colic, earaches and other childhood conditions

Your First Visit
More than 90 per cent of new clients to Wellness + Vitality Chiropractic are word of mouth referrals! Everyone is welcome and we look forward to welcoming you to our practice.

We set aside specific times of the day for first visits. If our allocated times do not suit you, we will do our very best to find a solution.

What happens on your first visit?

  1. A detailed health questionnaire is completed
  2. A thorough health history is discussed
  3. A specific chiropractic examination is conducted, including posture, movement and neurological and othopaedic tests where appropriate
  4. A referral for x-rays is organised if necessary.

Your second visit
includes:
  • A clear explanation of the findings from the tests performed during your first visit
  • Recommendation of a suitable course of care to best suit your needs
  • Your first adjustment

  • A progress examination time is arranged to measure your progress after a certain amount of care.

    Subsequent visits

Future visits can be booked in advance to ensure you are able to attend at a time suitable for you.

If you have children with you, please be assured they will be welcome in our office at all times. We have an area set aside for children to play in, and we also have Chiropractic assistants that thoroughly enjoy looking after children while they are in our office, and who will make sure your children enjoy their time at Wellness + Vitality Chiropractic.

Pregnancy and Babies - giving them the best start

    Pregnancy

The miracle of life! With all the information we now have about pregnancy and birth we often lose sight of the fact that it is a totally natural process.

Listening to your body and focussing on your own wellbeing is essential for your enjoyment of the experience but also essential for maximising the best environment for growth and development of your unborn baby.

In keeping with our philosophy of allowing your body to function at its best through regular chiropractic checks, we would encourage all pregnant women to consider Chiropractic as part of good ante-natal care.

Ensuring pelvic and spinal joints work well helps reduce the presence of intra-uterine constraint as well as alleviating back pain.

This can have an effect on the length of labour (shown to be reduced by 24% in first time mothers and by 33% in subsequent births*) as well as recovery time, and the likelihood of skull distortion (plagiocephaly) in newborns.

    Babies

Many parents are asked 'Why do you take your baby to see a Chiropractor?'

The nervous system is so integral to our exisitance that it is the very first identifiable organ in utero at around 3 weeks gestation. From this everything else grows and develops.

At birth we have arguably the most number of nerve cells we are ever likely to have. However, there are very few connections between these cells. In order for us to grow and develop to the best of our potential connections between these cells must be established.

This happens as a result of environmental stimulation and most dramatically in the first 2 years of life. Think about how helpless a newborn baby is compared to a toddler! This is why it is so important to stimulate your baby through lots of different means - smell, touch, sight, sound, movement etc.

The birth process (even if completely natural and unassisted) is a traumatic journey for the newborn.

The stresses placed on the head and neck especially, often lead to subluxations and subsequent nerve interference. This is more likely the more assitance is required (e.g. the use of drugs, venteuse, foreceps, caesearean). Of course this is not to say that assistance is not sometimes essential for the live delivery of a baby, however having your baby checked as soon after birth as possible for the presence of subluxations can reduce the impact on the baby's developing nervous system.

Signs that your baby may have subluxations and nerve interference may include difficulty attaching to feed (or a preference to one breast), holding their head tilted to one side or arched back when lying down or in a car seat, reflux or positing after feeding, irritability and colic-type symptoms, constipation, misshaped/flattened skull, reluctance to turn the head equally to left and right, slow to achieve developmental milestones e.g. rolling, sitting, crawling, walking etc.

There are many considerations when dealing with babies, but ensuring that there is no nerve interference helps allow proper nerve system development and allows your baby to achieve development milestones and reduce the chance of further signs of poor nervous system development/integration.

As a general rule, the earlier we see babies/children the less intervention is required.

Be assured, the techniques chosen for babies and children are very gentle and very specific.

Children - giving them the best start
Treating children is really an extension of our entire philosophy. If there is optimum nervous system function then we can develop to our potential - whatever that may be.

No more is this evident than in today's society. More and more children are being labelled as having some form of developmental delay, ADD/ADHD, dyspraxia, dyslexia, Tourette's syndrome, autism/Asperger's syndrome, OCD, anxiety. Why?

Theories abound, however it appears that many of these cases can be explained by imbalance in the function of the two halves of the brain. The two halves must 'talk' to each other and if one side has not developed as many connections as the other it may struggle to 'keep up' with the other side.

This can lead to confusion in the messaging and mean that we may exhibit some of these symptoms. It is important to stress that this does not necessarily mean that there is anything wrong with your child's brain. Rather, one side is 'fitter' than the other.

Our approach to caring for children is to ensure that their nervous system is as free from interference (subluxations) as possible through appropriate Chiropractic care.

Depending on the level of dysfunction, which is related to many factors and which will be assessed by taking careful and extensive history and examination, specific exercises and home routines as well as dietary advice may be recommended in conjuction with regular Chiropractic checks.

As a general rule, the earlier we see babies/children the less intervention is required.

Be assured, the techniques chosen for babies and children are very gentle and very specific.

    Your Wellness Plan Membership

    Why should you join?

Put simply, the Wellness Care Plan is directed to the many patients in our practice who realise the benefits of regular monthly chiropractic care, to improve their overall feeling of wellbeing.

The growth, development and performance of every part of your body is controlled and co-ordinated by the nerve system.

Research shows that a regular adjustment maintains your body's ability to function properly, by removing damaging spine and nerve malfunction and giving you the opportunity for better health throughout your lifetime.

Joining the Wellness Plan can save you time and money.

    AUDREY THOMAS, Chiropractic Assistant

I first met Dr Kerry Sissins as her patient 15 years ago. I had suffered a 12 year history of back pain and problems, and was amazed at how fast chiropractic helped me back to full recovery.

I was inspired by the natural, drug free and holistic approach that chiropractic has to health so when the opportunity came up to work at the clinic I was very excited and jumped at the chance to work in such a professional environment and to witness how chiropractic can help to restore the health and wellbeing of so many people, just did it for me. I now feel privileged to be part of her team, a team that provides a wonderful professional enviroment and a genuine care for the health and wellbeing of our patients.

Our body's own natural ability to function and heal itself, often with the help of an external influence, has led my own interest down the holistic route. I qualified as a beauty therapist in Germany and also have certified qualifications in Swedish massage, lymphdrainage, Indian head massage and Reiki.
