About Walker and Wood
We met 15 years ago, and found that we had many things in common, mainly our interest in homeopathy, and have been working together ever since. We share interests in the treatment and training of dogs, horses and even children!

Our shared ethos

We believe

  • in empowering our patients to make informed choices about their healthcare
  • in an integrated approach, so we will work with your other healthcare professionals
  • that homeopathy is not the only answer for everyone, and that orthodox medicine is not the only answer for everyone either
  • that sometimes your emotional state affects your physical symptoms, or vice versa – and that means that the holistic approach will work better than anything else
  • that when you develop symptoms your body is trying to tell you something that you need to know
  • that we can help you listen to your body and to make small adjustments to your lifestyle to find a healthier way of living

Why homeopathy?

Conventional medicine has two main characteristics. The first is that it directly addresses a specific disease and the second is that it treats by opposing the action of the disease.

Conventional medicine and directly addressing the specific disease

This means that if you have tonsillitis, you can go to the doctor and get some antibiotics, which are specifically designed to deal with tonsillitis, in everyone who has tonsillitis. If you and I went to the doctor with tonsillitis, it is more than likely that we would each get the same drug.

There are some problems with this approach -

  • If you don’t respond to antibiotics, or the first course doesn’t work, there is nothing else the doctor can do apart from prescribe more or stronger antibiotics.
  • Antibiotics can have some unpleasant side effects (Choices 2011*)
  • If you got tonsillitis because you have been under a lot of stress or you are run down and your immune system is not working well, antibiotics won’t cure the problem – in fact, research has shown that antibiotics actually undermine the immune response (Clarke et al. 2010*). Thus you are likely to develop tonsillitis or something similar again

Conventional medicine and opposite action

Drugs are designed to oppose the action of the disease. So, for example, if you have constipation, you would take a laxative. This loosens the stools and allows the stool to pass. You would know if you had taken too much because you would develop diarrhoea.

Clearly therefore the cure does not involve you at all, it’s all about the action of the drug.

Homeopathy has a different way of treating illness

A homeopathic remedy acts in a similar way to the disease (or illness) itself. That’s because we believe that in most circumstances, your immune system recognises there is a problem and responds appropriately to overcome the illness. It does this very frequently, and deals with most of our illnesses without any outside help.

However, there are times when your immune system does not respond, and we believe that that is because, for whatever reason, the immune system does not realise that there is an issue to be resolved. Research shows that this is a problem, particularly in old age (Aspinall 2005*).

Thus the similar remedy, purposefully chosen by your homeopath to suit you and your illness, should trigger your immune system into recognition of the illness and encourage it to fight back and resolve the situation.

One way to think about this is that the right remedy is like giving you a part of yourself that is missing back to you. It’s not something ‘other’ that you swallow or otherwise ingest at your peril. And because it’s similar to you, not opposite, then a homeopathic remedy has no side effects.

Another strength of homeopathy is that more than one specific disease can be dealt with at once. If we go back to our recurrent tonsillitis sufferer, perhaps he or she also is constantly tired, anxious and has trouble sleeping. Because homeopathy is able to encompass all of the symptoms of the whole person (not just the specific disease) then a good remedy will address all of these problems at the same time.

Homeopathy is also holistic, in that the choice of the remedy will reflect the physical, mental and emotional symptoms of the patient when that is appropriate.

What can homeopathy help with?

Homeopathy aims to stimulate the body’s own inner doctor and encourages the body to heal itself, which was thought by Hippocrates (460 BC-377BC*) to be the greatest force in getting well (Anon n.d.).

More recently, in the series Superhuman, presented by Professor Robert Winston (2001*) he states: “The real argument of the series is that often the body knows better than the doctors, and that doctors would do well to understand the basic science and improve their knowledge of how to help the body to heal itself”.

Homeopathy tries to do just that – to stimulate the body’s own healing mechanisms, because the body and the patient know more about the disease and how to get well than anyone else.

An audit of our practice over the last year shows:

  • 30% of our patients started treatment because of ‘women’s problems’, often diagnosed by their doctor as menopausal or hormonal problems.
  • 20% are children and babies, with more general health issues.
  • We also see many patients, both men and women, who have been through a period of change in their life – for example divorce, bereavement, and redundancy – as these are typically periods of stress to which the body often responds by getting ill (Andrew 1991*).

We have a particular interest in offering consultations for people with skin conditions, hormonal issues and digestive disorders. We practice integrated health care and refer patients to medical practitioners for tests and a discussion of other treatment options.

Why 2 is better than 1

Between us we have a wealth of experience and training, so you can be assured that your treatment is sustained by a comprehensive background in holistic therapy. Our partnership enables us to offer you a much more flexible pricing structure so you have a wider range of prices to choose from.

Another benefit for you is that one of us will always be ‘on call’, enabling you to get advice 7 days a week. To access this service you need to use our mobile phone numbers, either to call or text, and we will get back to you within 24 hours. If you know that your homeopath is on holiday, you can ring the other as she will be on call and will have access to your notes if necessary.
