WHAT IS PHYSIOTHERAPY?

Just a brief overview

“Physiotherapy is a health care profession concerned with human function and movement and maximising potential. It uses physical approaches to promote, maintain and restore physical, psychological and social well-being, taking account of variations in health status”
- The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Curriculum Framework (January 2002)

Physiotherapists view movement as central to health and well being. Physiotherapists identify and make the most of movement ability by health promotion, pre-screening and preventive advice, ergonomic intervention, treatment and rehabilitation. We specialise in the treatment of sports injuries. Treatment incorporates manual techniques and sports rehabilitation, aiding patients to return to full fitness and function in sport. We provide sports pre screening and pre season assessments.

Neurological Patients

We currently treat a number of patients with neurological conditions, such as head Injury, motor neuron disease, polymicrongria, cerebral palsy, stoke and Parkinson’s disease. Treatment involves rehabilitation techniques, balance retraining, functional restoration programmes, mobility work and exercise programmes.

We are able to treat these patients within their own homes if unable to come to the clinic.

Learning Disabilities

We run three clinics for Sense, which is a charity for young adults with deaf-blindness and learning disabilities. Within these clinics our physiotherapists work with the rehabilitation and management of patients with learning disabilities. This includes a number of young adults with cerebral palsy and other neurological disabilities. We strive to maintain maximum independence of the individuals, providing them with the highest possible quality of life.

We also treat a number of patients with learning disabilities within the community through home visits.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical technique. It is one of the many skills used within physiotherapy as an integrated approach to the management of pain, inflammation and as a means of enhancing the body's own healing chemicals in order to aid recovery and enhance rehabilitation (AACP Website 2008).

The body has the ability to "self repair; the use of Acupuncture, Acupressure or Electro-Acupuncture enhances the repair mechanism and enables an improved recovery time allowing other physiotherapy treatments such as exercise, muscle strengthening and rehabilitation can achieve effective results (AACP Website 2008).

Massage

Massage is known to relax muscles, aid well-being and improve healing. Appointments can be booked for a massage, providing 40 minutes massage of the back, neck and shoulders. This is all provided by a qualified physiotherapist.

Pilates 1:1

Pilates has been proven to be an effective treatment in preventing low back pain reoccurrence. It incorporates a series of gentle exercises and movement. This helps to increase the strength and stability in your core pelvic and back stabilising muscles that support your lower back. Our physiotherapists can provide you with a Pilates exercise program and general advice on reducing low back pain on a one to one basis.

Workstation Assessments and Car Assessments

Our physiotherapists are trained in occupational health and ergonomics. We are able to provide ergonomic workstation, office and car assessments as required.
