Uppermill Therapies is a small business offering Massage Therapy and Reflexology for men and women throughout the local area and beyond. The business which is based on the high street in Uppermill Saddleworth, originally began in Mossley, Tameside as The Massage and Reflexology Centre in 1996, although Karen has been practising complementary therapies since 1988. Uppermill Therapies has full-time reception and employs six therapists.

The proprietor is Karen Atkinson, who has been involved in the complementary therapy trade for many years. Having previously established the Massage & Reflexology Centre in Mossley, Tameside, she also taught complementary therapies in Further Education for many years. Karen has a Certificate in Education and teaches various workshops in massage and refexology at the practice.

Uppermill Therapies has an expanding network of clients, located in and around Saddleworth. These include clients with classic muscular tension for example from sitting at a desk, driving, or from sport. Clients can have a treatment plan for massage or reflexology and can attend weekly or monthly depending on their specific needs.

Massage

Massage has been around for centuries. It is essentially a manual therapy specifically targeting soft tissues (muscle, tendons and facia) and can be used to treat muscle tension which is a problem caused by many factors.

The soft tissues of our body are generally organised in layers that need to slide and glide over one another for movement to occur normally. Restriction of this movement can lead to tightness in certain muscle groups. With the development of altered movement patterns to compensate for this restriction. Massage techniques can 'loosen up' these restrictions, lessening the need for compensatory movements.

Massage as an isolated treatment is beneficial but generally will only lead to short term benefit. When it is used as a regular treatment it can identify and manage the underlying cause of the tension and can be very effective.

Massage can be light or firm. A consultation is needed prior to every treatment in order to decide this. We recommend two treatments initially, a week apart. This gives the muscles time to react to the massage and also eliminate toxins released.

Deep Tissue Massage

This is the same treatment as massage therapy but with deeper techniques, if you feel this is what you need. Ideal for:
    1. Stiff shoulders
    2. Tight ankles / calfs
    3. Lower back muscles
Your massage therapist will decide if this treatment may be too deep for you after your consultation. This is rare however, but will mean you can have a lighter treatment.

Indian Head Massage

Indian head massage concentrates on head and neck tension which can often be caused by a desk job / driving / stress. It often can cause:
    1. Headaches
    2. Neck tension
    3. Jaw tension
    4. Upper back aching
    5. Sinus tension
Firm massage techniques are used to free off tension, including pressure points on the face and head.

Reflexology

Reflexology originates with the Chinese and Egyptians. It works through precise pressure-point massage of reflex points on the feet (or hands) and works on the principle that the reflex points correspond to every organ and all parts of the body.

It is a safe holistic, non invasive therapy which stimulates the body's own natural healing energies. The reflexes are arranged in such a way as to represent a map of the body; the left foot representing the left side of the body and the right foot representing the right side.

A reflexologist can feel imbalanced areas in the feet, and the pressure-point massage assists on rebalancing these areas and restoring the body's natural balance. To receive reflexology can be very relaxing.

Reflexology can be effective for many conditions ranging from stress symptoms to pre, during and post pregnancy. A treatment plan can be made for you. Please feel free to ask us any questions; we are all qualified reflexologists.

Reflexology and Pregnancy
by Karen Atkinson - British Reflexology Association

Reflexology can be very relaxing at any time but it is also beneficial throughout pre-conception, pregnancy and post-pregnancy.

A consultation is always completed initially at the 1st treatment establishing the menstrual cycle (if necessary) and then a treatment plan is made.

Pre-conception

This can be a very stressful time for women and it is often thought that reflexology cannot be done if IVF medication is being taken. This is not true as the basic rule for reflexology is that the area requiring medication is omitted at that time. It is the pelvis that is omitted if any IVF medication is being taken, but a treatment is still done.

If medication is not being taken, we will still only do a complete treatment on days 1-5 of the cycle, (when bleeding occurs). Any other time of the month, the pelvis is omitted in case of early pregnancy.

Pregnancy

We NEVER treat the pelvic area throughout the pregnancy trimesters. The rest of the reflexes can be treated however and this can be beneficial in rebalancing the following areas:-
  • Fluid retention
  • Breast tenderness
  • Constipation
  • IBS
  • Lower back (aching)
  • Shoulders / neck ache
  • Sciatica
  • Insomnia
  • Tiredness / fatigue
  • Aching ankles and feet
  • Indigestion / heartburn

Post-pregnancy

It is advisable to continue with reflexology after the pregnancy is over. Physical and lifestyle changes will often show and reflexology can rebalance:-
  • Lymphatic sluggishness
  • Breast sluggishness
  • Hormones
  • Fatigue symptoms
  • Digestive imbalances
  • Detoxing (especially from medication)
"It is incredible to see how accurately the reflexes change in accordance with the physical state of the body from conception to lactation". Karen Atkinson
