Sports Massage

What is Sports & Remedial Massage?

Sports massage is a specific area of massage therapy that has been developed to help improve sports performance. Remedial techniques are incorporated into a deep massage to help improve the body’s movement & to deal with injuries & postural problems. This includes stretches and aftercare advice.Sports massage can be adapted to enhance pre-event preparation & warm-up, to offer assistance during an event & to aid recovery post-event.

How can Sports & Remedial Massage help me?

Any sportsperson places stresses on their body by frequent training & competitions. Rest days, stretching, good diet & hydration will help the body recover but sometimes more is needed. Sports massage will aid blood circulation removing waste products from tired muscles & will stretch out muscles that have become tight from repeated use.

Many athletes use regular sports massage to help maintain optimal athletic performance. Sports massage is also an effective way of detecting minor soft tissue problems & dealing with them before a more serious injury occurs.

It is an excellent way of relieving tension & tiredness allowing the body to relax. Examples of sports injuries that can benefit from sports & remedial massage treatment are sprains, strains, Achilles tendonitis, Runners’ knee, shin splints, Tennis/Golfer’s elbow, plantar fasciitis, piriformis syndrome & tight muscles generally.

As a runner who still competes regularly I know how frustrating a sports injury can be. During treatment I will do my utmost to remedy and limit damage and offer advice on how to prevent future reoccurence.

I don’t do sport. How can I benefit from Sports & Remedial Massage?

Muscle tension can affect anyone. Remedial massage can offer help to those who suffer from back, neck or shoulder pain which may be brought on by decorating, gardening or even driving. Many postural problems occur as a result of sedentary activities such as sitting at a computer all day. These problems can be treated in the same way as those of an active sportsperson. Repetitive strain injury, whiplash, frozen shoulder, headache, migraine, stiff neck & backache can all be relieved with deep tissue massage. Stress & tiredness are also common problems that can be alleviated.

About me
Trudy Kuhn Dip SMRT, PT (CYQ), MISRM.

I competed as an 800m & cross country runner in my teens. In later life I suffered badly from Achilles Tendonitis which eventually resulted in my having decompression surgery on both tendons. This was successful & in 2002, the year after the operations, I ran the London Marathon to raise money for an orthopaedic charity. I became very involved in distance running & fitness & decided to change career by studying for the YMCA Personal Trainer’s Diploma. I followed this up by becoming a fully qualified Sports & Remedial Massage Therapist in 2005.

Since then I have been almost solely involved in sports massage, using the personal training knowledge as an invaluable aid for advising clients on remedial exercise. I see clients at two clinics, Head2Toe Physiotherapy Clinic at Leatherhead Leisure Centre and & Dorking Physiotherapy Clinic at Dorking Leisure Centre; both in Surrey.
