Clinics in Hammersmith & Barnes - Building a stronger and more loving you.
We all need a bit of help in life. Perhaps you suffer from difficult issues like depression, anxiety, anger or stress. If you are going through hard times, having to cope with grief, bereavement or various types of emotional trauma, I can help you.
Our first session is an introductory session for which I do not charge, to allow you to meet me and for me to determine that I will be genuinely able to help you. It is very important that you find a therapist who feels right for you and with whom you feel safe and comfortable working with.
I do not believe that psychological skills alone are enough to effectively do this work. In addition, the client must feel that the therapist is totally accepting of who you are at the present time. No therapist can fake genuine regard for a client for very long.
My counselling practice is by the river, close to Hammersmith Bridge in West London and also 6 Castelnau Mansions Barnes SW13 9QX.
Psychodynamic counsellor Richard Gosling
From a privileged upbringing with a huge emotional gap I embarked on a life believing that my actions would heal and fill all the gaps. Following a career involving secular international issues and businesses, I became aware of becoming increasingly dysfunctional with a number of personality disorders.
The training I had received enabled me to understand that I should seek help. After entering therapy and subsequently having benefitted from wonderful people counselling me, my path in life turned and as a result I resolved to share all my knowledge and skills with those who suffer and need help.
My training as a counsellor has included psychodynamic counselling, psychosynthesis, humanistic and stress disorders. I specialise in the following conditions; Depression, Anger/Rage, Unresolved Grief and Bereavement counselling, Shame, Low Self-Esteem and Relationship Counselling. I see clients at my private practice by the river Thames, in Hammersmith, West London.
“Unlike many fellow professionals I do not use testimonials. Firstly, a testimonial is only truly credible being associated with its author, which of course, is not possible. I also believe that using words from a client for a promotional purpose, no matter that they may have volunteered their usage, is a betrayal of trust and contrary to the most basic psychotherapy ethics and principles. The journey between the therapist and the client is an absolutely privileged and personal journey where no two journeys are ever identical.
It is my long experience that, no matter how genuine it may be, the re-assuring words of one party are no re-assurance for another. With something as important as our own personal inner work it is our intuition and our own judgement upon which we should rely.”
Therapy & Counselling
There comes a time in everyone’s lives when one wonders whether talking to someone will help alleviate things. The reasons could be many – for example being insecure in a relationship to something more all encompassing such as feeling life’s stuck in a rut. People also seek out therapy when they are facing, or trying to get over a major crisis such as depression, bereavement, grief or when they have anxiety management problems. Couples counselling or relationship counselling can also be transformative.

Anger Management Counselling
Is anger a problem for you?
In simple terms our anger becomes a problem when we allow it to take control over us. This can happen in many different ways but it will always be destructive in one form or another. We all have a perfect right to ‘be angry’ at different times but it is how we allow it to manifest that is important.
The source of our anger could be rooted in a number of different experiences we will have had earlier in our life. Apart from the hurt our anger can cause to ourselves and others it also affects our health. It is a negative pressure which is continually building up inside of us until a variety of triggers will cause it to burst out. How we deal with this is to find and look at the source and re-direct it into positive channels.

Bereavement / Grief Counselling
Have you lost someone you love?
Bereavement or Grief is a natural response to someone or something that is lost to us but we all experience it differently. How we express our feelings of loss or grief is very individual to each one of us. It does not go away if we try to ignore it, it becomes suppressed and then will affect our behaviour. There is also no prescribed time for our grief. “I should have got over it by now” is part of the denial system preventing us from truly honouring and working through our grief.
Our first bereavement or grief counselling session is an introduction for which I do not charge to allow you to meet me and for me to determine that I will be genuinely able to help you. My practice is by the river, close to Hammersmith Bridge in West London.
Do you struggle with depression?
Depression is an emotional cancer, a cancer of our spirit. The longer it is ignored the stronger it becomes. Taking anti-depressants is like taking Morphine for cancer, it does not heal the condition, it just temporarily numbs us from the pain. It may come and go but there will be triggers which will bring it back, very often it will becomes stronger each time. Depression has its roots in our past and once we can look at it and understand the source we can heal ourselves.

Low self-esteem / Anxiety / Social Interaction
Do you suffer from low self-esteem or anxiety?
The condition of issues around self-esteem, anxiety and a fear of social interaction are all related, one of these issues will feed the others. We are not designed to experience these conditions and their root will always be in trauma experienced in our earlier life which we may very well not remember. It may have been a single event or it may have been a sequence of events which caused us so much trauma that we had to suppress it deeply to try and push it away.
By looking at these events we can give them absolute understanding but also realise that these events should not be part of our life today. By doing this the sense of ‘self’ and freedom we discover opens us to a rich life most probably not previously experienced.

Would you like to have happier relationships?
We all have an absolute right to be happy and secure in loving, healthy, harmonious and trusting relationships. Sadly, for many of us this seems remote and our relationships can feel like a continuous struggle for a sense of safety, acceptance, understanding and emotional security.
Do we trust our partner, does our partner trust us? Do we feel able to be completely honest in a relationship? Do we seek happiness or a sense of self-worth through the happiness or esteem shown to us by another? Do we believe that our happiness can only come from the ‘right’ relationship?

Therapy & Counselling
‘Person Centred’ Counselling
My therapy and counselling is based on the principles of ‘Person Centred’ Counselling. It encourages clients to gradually feel safe to let go of all their preconceived notions of how they should be and to find parts of themselves that express their real deep feelings and desires. In time, clients are able to move away from the notion that they have to keep up appearances and live as others expect them to live. With help, they learn to find and accept their real self. They also move towards a greater respect and understanding of others.
This is the most challenging type of therapy and makes the most demands on the therapist. This is because a client must feel that their therapist is utterly trustworthy and dependable as a person.
I do not believe that psychological skill alone is enough in this work. In addition, the client must feel that the therapist is totally accepting of them. And no therapist can fake genuine regard for a client for long.
My attitude to my clients is one of total acceptance as he or she is at present – not simply of what that person might become.
At the heart of the therapy is the belief that if a person is cared for (even if just by the therapist), then that person begins to feel – at quite a deep level – that he or she is worth caring for.
As a CBT or cognitive behavioural therapist, I work with people who deal with depression, anxiety, bereavement, grief, or other emotional and traumatic experiences. But CBT is just one part of the mix.
Sustainable Empowerment is a therapy that will empower you to deal with things and give you tools that will always stay with you.
