About Us

Hello, my name is Angela Steel and I am the founder of SuperWellness. I trained in nutritional therapy after a successful career in senior marketing management, as a result of an overwhelming passion for food, health and wellbeing.

I have always been fascinated by food, initially having grown up in France, for the taste and pleasure of it, and then later on, after completing an intense fasting retreat, I became much more aware of its close relation to health.

After my fasting experience, I felt so full of energy both physically and mentally, that I started to read more and more about the physiological effects of different foods. Today in my late 30s I feel much more energetic and suffer from fewer aches, pains and illness than I did in my 20s – than I ever did in fact! What inspires me to this day is the idea that we have so much power over our health – feeling just ‘OK’ is not good enough, even less so making do with chronic symptoms and discomfort. We really can take control and set the bar as high as we like: this is what wellness is all about.

I qualified in nutritional therapy at the London College of Naturopathic Medicine under the guidance of some extraordinary teachers who passed on not just their scientific knowledge but also their caring philosophy.

My training and approach are strongly influenced by naturopathic principles as well as the more modern functional medicine school.

I work on the premise that the body functions as a whole and that the most effective forms of therapy are the ones that identify the root cause of a problem rather than focusing on the symptoms. This is why my nutritional programmes are designed around the person, and their individual make up, rather than a ‘condition’.

Naturopathic and functional medical approach

What is Naturopathy?

At SuperWellness, our approach to nutritional therapy combines the holistic methods of naturopathy with modern, science based methodologies defined by functional medicine.
What is naturopathy?

Naturopathy focuses on preventing illness and uses natural, non-toxic therapies in its practice. We believe that our body, mind, emotions, and environment are all interconnected and have a part to play in our health. As a naturopathic nutritional practice, SuperWellness follows some key principles:

    1. ‘The healing power of nature’: natural healing mechanisms take place in the body and mind to maintain and restore health. We work to support these mechanisms through methods that are in harmony with natural processes.
    2. ‘First do no harm’: we are trained to use techniques which minimize the risk of any harmful side effects. If we think that we cannot effectively help you, we will refer you to the appropriate specialist or medical body.
    3. ‘Find the cause’: we believe in identifying and correcting the underlying cause of illness, whether linked to diet, lifestyle or environment.
    4. ‘Therapist as teacher’: our approach is designed to educate our clients and to encourage people to take responsibility for their own health.
    5. ‘Treat the whole person’: we believe in the interconnectedness of physical, emotional, environmental, dietary, genetic, lifestyle and other factors and take these into account.
    6. ‘Prevent: we teach our clients how to lead a healthy life and prevent small issues turning into more serious or chronic degenerative diseases.
    7. 'Establish wellness’: wellness here is defined as a healthy balance of the mind, body and spirit that results in an overall feeling of well-being.

Today, these principles are still as relevant as ever, and have been reinforced by a vast body of scientific research that has taken place in recent years. It is in this context that functional medicine has developed.

Functional medicine works based on an understanding of the physiological mechanisms that underlie disease. It is a discipline which focuses not on treating symptoms, but on the prevention and treatment of chronic disease. Functional medicine views chronic disease as the result of a complex interaction of multiple organ systems, physiological and biochemical pathways with environmental influences and genetic predispositions.

It is a science-based approach to health which is centred on the client rather than the disease and addresses the following key body systems:

  • Hormonal balance
  • Gut and digestive health
  • Environmental factors
  • Detoxification
  • Inflammation
  • Energy
  • Mind body connection

What we provide

Nutritional advice

Based on your health profile, we will put together a personalised programme. We will recommend foods to include in your diet and foods to avoid. We may have identified certain allergies or sensitivities, and remove these foods from your diet, at least temporarily, to help your body find its balance again. There may also be foods which we’ll include and if you are not familiar with them, we will explain where you can find them and how to prepare them.

Beyond the types of food, we will talk about meal frequencies and quantities, practicalities of preparing food and we may also provide you with some recipes and even shopping lists to make sure sticking to your programme is easy.

Nutritional supplement recommendations

The food we have available today is significantly lower in nutrients than 50 years ago. With intensive farming, foods that are stored for long periods and travel long distances, it’s not surprising that what we eat is depleted of the nutrients we need to stay healthy. Add to this the rise of processed meals, and it’s easy to become deficient in certain key nutrients. Over time, this can lead to physiological processes being compromised in the body and eventually chronic conditions can develop. As part of the consultation, we will recommend supplements which are relevant to you, and made by the best companies around. Quality of supplements can vary enormously depending on the processes used in their manufacture and the quality of ingredients used. We choose top grade, tried and tested brands, most of them only available through practitioner recommendation.

Lifestyle recommendations

We will talk to you about lifestyle factors which affect your health and work hand in hand with the food that you eat to achieve the best possible results. These could include general advice on exercise or techniques to reduce stress, for example.

Testing

We work according to the functional medicine approach, which means that laboratory testing forms a large part of our practice. We can recommend both genetic tests, which tell us about any risk areas which your genes might predispose you to, as well as functional tests, in order to find out a whole range of information about your current health status, from physiological imbalances to nutrient deficiencies.
