About Reflexology

Reflexology is a complementary therapy that uses pressure-point massage (usually on the feet, but also on the hands) to restore the flow of energy throughout the entire body. It is based on the principle that each part of the body is interconnected to the feet and hands through the nervous system. By stimulating specific reflex points in the feet and hands essential nutrients can be directed to poorly functioning areas of the body.

Reflexology is an holistic treatment that has roots in ancient times. The earliest evidence comes from the tomb of an Egyptian physician, dating back to 2500BC. In the early 20th Century Dr. William Fitzgerald founded “Zone Therapy” based on research that proposed ten vertical zones running from the top of the head to the tips of the fingers and toes. He found that when direct pressure was applied to any part within a particular zone it had an anaesthetising effect on another part of the same zone.

In the 1930’s Eunice Ingham further developed this zone theory into what is now known as Reflexology. She mapped the feet in detail and proposed that areas of tension or congestion in any part of the foot were mirrored in the corresponding part of the body.

Benefits of Reflexology

Reflexology can help to restore and maintain the body’s natural equilibrium which will in turn encourage natural feelings of wellbeing.

Reflexology can help reduce the stresses and strains of everyday life, aiding relaxation, improving circulation and revitalising energy levels.

Reflexology can be incorporated into a preventative healthcare lifestyle, which is becoming increasingly important in modern life, as we continue to recognise the damage caused to our health by our environment.

If you would like to see research papers for trials into the efficacy of Reflexology, please click here, where we have listed links to trial papers under the headings of various conditions.

For further information about the specific benefits of this holistic therapy, please feel free to contact the Clinic and discuss your health issues confidentially with me.

Stress & Anxiety

Stress is defined as the feeling of being under too much mental or emotional pressure. Psychological symptoms of stress include: anger; depression; anxiety; difficulty sleeping; feeling tired. Physical symptoms of stress include: chest pains; dizziness; headaches; increased sweating; muscular aches; low energy.

Studies have shown that prolonged stress can have a negative impact on health. When the body’s energies are being constantly diverted to control an anxious state of mind, the parasympathetic system is unable to function properly in its repair processes, reproduction and digestion. Reflexology may help to relieve stress and bring the nervous system back into balance.

Fertility & Maternity Care

Whether you are trying to conceive naturally or with the assistance of IVF, the journey to conception can be stressful. A tailored fertility reflexology treatment can help aid relaxation and may help balance the body’s endocrine system which is necessary to achieve pregnancy.

I have received training in maternity care reflexology which enables me to treat clients through the course of their pregnancy. Reflexology may help to manage common pregnancy-related complaints such as morning sickness, high blood pressure, backache and heartburn.

A recent research study by Valiani, M. et al (2010) found that reflexology during pregnancy significantly reduced pain and the length of first stage of labour.

Reflexology treatments following the birth of your child can be particularly beneficial as you learn to adjust to the demand’s a baby can place on you emotionally and physically.

For more information on how reflexology may help support you before, during and after pregnancy or to book an appointment please get in touch.

What to expect at a treatment

At your first treatment a full medical and lifestyle history will be requested which will enable a tailored treatment plan to be developed for your specific needs.

If you are receiving foot reflexology you will then be asked to remove your shoes and socks before being invited to sit back and relax into a supportive reclining chair.

The treatment will involve the application of pressure-point massage that will feel relaxing, not ticklish or painful. If there are any tender areas, which reflect imbalance or congestion in the corresponding part of the body, these will be only be temporary and worked away in a soothing manner.

Some clients like to chat during a treatment whilst others prefer to close their eyes and listen to calming music. Some clients feel so relaxed during a treatment that they fall asleep.

Treatments usually last approximately 45 minutes, however please allow slightly longer for the first treatment due to the initial consultation.

The number of treatments that are needed will vary from person to person. Whilst some clients visit fortnightly or monthly for relaxation and to maintain good health, others with particular problems may find that a set of weekly or fortnightly treatments are most appropriate for their bodies to regain natural balance.

The information that you provide will be remain confidential.

Reflexologists do not diagnose, prescribe or claim to cure therefore any health concerns should be discussed with your GP.
