Our bodies are bombarded with so many things which deplete our health;
  • Stress from busy chaotic lives
  • Emotional upset/trauma
  • Poor diet - lack of fresh wholesome food, along with the consumption of chemicals from pesticides/herbicides and
  • chemical food additives
  • Dehydration from inadequate water and consumption of drinks which dehydrate (i.e. tea, coffee, alcohol, sugary drinks)
  • Smoking
  • Drug and Alcohol Use (including prescription drugs)
  • Pollution
  • Electromagnetic Radiation from mobile phones and other electronic devices
  • Lack of Exercise

The body gives warning signs that it needs attention in the form of pain and ailments, but many people ignore these signs or visit their GP to get drugs to treat their symptoms. This not only ignores the root cause, but also creates undesirable side effects. Small imbalances which are ignored and/or masked with drugs, lead to bigger imbalances which then lead to disease. Many people are unaware of how to properly care for their body, what foods to eat and what they can do to help themselves. Shiatsu-Kinesiology is a combination of therapies. It includes a wide variety of techniques, traditional and modern therapies, various remedies, nutritional supplements, food sensitivity testing and dietary and lifestyle advice. It addresses the Emotional, Structural, Nutritional and Electrical aspects of the body giving a truly holistic treatment. Although I always combine techniques from Shiatsu and Systematic Kinesiology, I do focus on one treatment or the other depending on what the client has requested. These therapies help to restore balance and healing within the body, and this regular balancing helps to prevent small imbalances leading to future problems.

Systematic Kinesiology

The basic tool within kinesiology is the muscle test, which is testing the patient’s ability to hold a muscle against light pressure. Initially, a series of muscles will be tested which will highlight which area to focus on. The arms, legs or head will be placed into specific positions and light pressure applied against the muscle being tested. Each muscle is related to an organ, and also to a Meridian (an energy pathway – see more on this under ‘Shiatsu’). Together the muscle, organ and Meridian form a ‘circuit’. If there are chemical, emotional, structural or energetic stresses affecting the circuit, the muscle tested will feel ‘spongy’ or will go weak when light pressure is applied – this indicates an imbalance in that circuit which will then be further investigated to find out what factors are aggravating the imbalance, and what will help to restore balance. A variety of techniques used by acupuncturists, chiropractors, cognitive and nutritional therapists are used to help correct the problem.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a traditional hands-on Japanese healing therapy and is carried out whilst fully clothed. It originated in Japan from Traditional Chinese Medicine, with influences from more recent western therapies. The aim is to restore health by activating the body’s self-healing system.

The philosophy underlying Shiatsu is that vital energy (Ki or Chi) flows throughout the body in a series of channels called Meridians. Most of the Meridians are linked to a body organ. When the Ki circulating through the Meridians becomes blocked or depleted, we experience this as a pain or an ailment at a physical or emotional level.

Shiatsu uses the same Meridian pathways/points as Acupuncture, but instead of using needles, the Shiatsu practitioner uses a variety of techniques to improve energy flow. Shiatsu means ‘finger pressure’ in Japanese, in practice however, a practitioner uses touch and comfortable pressure which includes gentle holding, pressing with palms, thumbs, fingers, elbows, knees and feet, manipulative techniques, and when appropriate more dynamic rotations and stretches, to adjust the body’s physical structure and balance its energy flow.
