COUNSELLING & THERAPY

People often seek counselling when they are concerned by particular problems, when they are distressed, or when they are experiencing a general sense of unease and lack of fulfilment in their lives.

Counselling can be effective in the treatment of the following issues

  • Low self-esteem

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Panic attacks

  • Phobias

  • Bereavement loss

  • Stress

  • Anger management

  • Relationship problems

  • Childhood problems

  • Abuse

  • Issues of isolation or loneliness

  • Work dissatisfaction

  • Addictions of various kinds

  • Eating disorders

  • A sense that life could be of a better quality

  • A loss of a sense of direction and purpose

It does not involve giving advice or directing a client to take a particular course of action.

The outcome of the work between a client and their counsellor will be dependent on a variety of dynamics — the effectiveness of the counsellor, the limitations of the approach, the commitment and effort from the client and the complexity of the issues brought.

Counselling does not offer a ‘magic wand’ and entering into it requires serious consideration. An initial consultation will give you the opportunity to decide whether counselling is a suitable way forward for you.

In the counselling sessions the client can explore various aspects of their life and feelings, talking about them freely and openly in a way that is rarely possible with friends or family. Bottled-up feelings such as anger, anxiety, grief and embarrassment can become very intense and counselling offers an opportunity to explore them, with the possibility of making them easier to understand. The counsellor will encourage the expression of feelings and as a result of their training will be able to accept and reflect the client’s problems without becoming burdened by them.

ABOUT SARAH

I have worked for a number of years as a Counsellor and Senior Trainee Integrative Psychotherapist in both the private and charity fields. I have had experience of both long- and short-term work with a wide range of issues, both with my private clients and those who I have worked with at a leading charity in the West Midlands. I have particular experience in working with stress, anxiety, depression, psychosomatic symptoms, panic attacks, feelings of low self-worth and low self-esteem, physical and emotional abuse, bereavement, trauma, addictive patterns, relationship problems, eating disorders, and those who are struggling with a lack of purpose and meaning in their lives. I am registered with and adhere to the Ethical Code of the Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute (SPTI) which is a constituent member of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). All my client work is supervised by a UKCP registered supervisor. I am also a Member of British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and am bound by the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy which helps to protect clients. I trained for three years at the SPTI gaining a Post Graduate Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy which is a BACP and UKCP accredited course validated by the University of Birmingham. I am currently undertaking research at SPTI, while completing a Master of Arts in Integrative Psychotherapy with Birmingham University. On completion I will gain full UKCP registration. I also hold a Bachelor's Degree (with Honours) from the University of Brighton. APPROACH As an Integrative Counsellor/Therapist I work using a developmental-relational approach that uses a synthesis of Humanistic Psychology, Object Relations Theory and Psychoanalytic Self-Psychology. I ‘integrate’ these approaches depending on the needs of the person I am working with, with the aim of enabling them to experience life in the fullest way possible for them. Working in this way enables an understanding of how past experiences shape how we are today, while also focusing on here and now experiencing. The relationship between therapist and client is very important. Once a trusting secure relationship is achieved, it can be used as a way of exploring issues affecting you in order to find more fulfilling ways of being in the world. Through this relationship, you will be able to have different experiences of relating and being, in order to grow and make positive changes. The uniqueness of a therapeutic relationship is the availability of another human being who has no preconception of you and no personal agenda other than to be in relationship with you and be helpful in guiding you in your right direction. Confidentiality and trust are considered to be of utmost importance in therapy. Clients may share difficult feelings and thoughts with me and in doing so can expect that any details of their personal identity will remain confidential. I work with individual adults — either on an open-ended basis or for an agreed time period — with the aim of resolving issues and enabling life enhancement. Clients come from Birmingham, Walsall, Tamworth and the surrounding West Midlands. Rebalance Therapy Centre is easily accessible from Erdington, Great Barr, Streetly, Aldridge, Shenstone, Blake Street, Butlers Lane, Four Oaks, Wylde Green, Chester Road, Erdington, Gravelly Hill, Aston, Birmingham New Street, Five Ways, University, Selly Oak, Bournville, Kings Norton and Northfield.
