WELCOME! You have taken the first step in taking control and changing your life for the better.

Are You Finding it difficult to cope?

Do You Need Someone to Talk to?

Have you lost hope or Inspiration?

Everyone goes through periods when life's pressures become too much or some major crisis changes one's life forever. It is at this time that we need someone to talk to, someone who will listen sensitively and without judgement and who will help us untangle our confused and anxious thoughts and give us hope for the future.

I offer private appointments to individual adults, working with counselling, psychotherapy and hypnotherapy, depending on your particular needs. A fully confidential and caring service, I offer people the chance to talk confidentially about whatever is on their mind.

I have particular experience of working with young adults who are experiencing family and relationship problems and who lack purpose and need inspiration and focus in their life

Other issues and problems I can help with:-

  • Confidence Building and Motivation
  • Unwanted Patterns of Behaviour or Thought
  • Stress, Anxiety & Depression
  • Crisis & Change - including divorce, mid-life, redundancy & retirement
  • Troubled Relationships
  • Anger management
  • Bereavement & Loss

    HOW I WORK

My aim as a therapist is to be warm, non-judgmental and respectful of my client's concerns whatever they may be. Fundamental to all my work is the quality of my relationship with my client. I aim to respect each one as an individual whose experience is singular and particular to him/her. Unconditional regard – the ability to accept others, whatever they say or do, without prejudice – is a key aspect of my work. Although I participate actively in the sessions, making observations and offering interpretations as appropriate, I believe that it is ultimately the client who has the power to make changes. My role is to assist in this process.

I also offer creative group self development workshops utilising aspects from my creative, counselling and hypnotherapy approaches. For more information on these workshops and upcoming dates visit my ‘creative workshops’ page.

    PERSONAL PROFILE

My initial training was in the arts having been a practicing artist since the 1980’s. In 1999 I began working in the area of arts management, programming contemporary art exhibitions as well as organising workshops, seminars and artist residencies.

My interest as an artist always lay in the human condition, in psychology and philosophy. Having spent some 16 years overseas I had the privilege of experiencing a diverse mix of cultures and ethnic groups which further fuelled that interest.

In 2005 I decided to train as a counsellor and hypnotherapist with the view of combining this training with my creative background into some kind of hybrid form of therapy.

    MY TRAINING

The training I undertook was in Integrative, person centred counselling and psychotherapy.

    What does this mean?

There are many different counselling 'methods' that have been developed over the years by some of the great pioneers such as Freud, Rogers, Maslow, Skinner and Ellis.

Integrative counselling starts from the premise that no one person is the same and that people suffer from a wide range of psychological distress and disturbance. To bring about effective counselling, the therapist needs to adapt their approach to the particular needs of the client, using a method or a variety of methods that will best suit those needs.

Person centred counselling was developed by one of America’s most distinguished psychologists, Carl Rogers who worked with a non-directive form of counselling, where the client had full control over the direction and pace of their therapy.

Many of the difficulties we face in our lives today can be traced back to unresolved issues from our past, even those we may not be able to understand or even be aware of. My role is to work with you to try to identify these issues and patterns from the past and, without giving advice, help you to explore alternative ways of being.

I also have training in the art of Hypnosis. Hypnotherapy can in some cases be an extraordinarily powerful tool that enables many clients to face their unconscious and often habitual self defeating behaviours

    TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Fees - £35 for 45 min session payable at the end of each session, either in cash or by cheque. I also offer limited concessional appointments for those who have no or low income. Please phone for more details.

    Hours of business – Monday – Friday 10 - 6pm

Appointment times - These are negotiable, either on a session by session basis or as a contracted block of sessions, whichever seems most appropriate

Assessment - The first session is an opportunity for us to explore whether the services I offer are appropriate for you and to allow you to make an informed decision about whether or not you you wish to continue with further counselling. Attendance at the first session does not commit either of us to further sessions.

Number of sessions - Whether a client comes to counselling on an open-ended or time-limited basis varies according to the different needs and objectives of each individual. One may choose to come for just a few sessions to focus on a particular issue; another may prefer to stay for far longer to explore more deeply-rooted difficulties. Either way, this is something we would discuss and agree upon together, with the final decision always being taken in the client’s best interest.

Regularity of sessions - It is usually advisable to meet once a week especially in the early stages, so that information and insights gained in one session are still fresh in your mind at the next. However, if that is difficult for you we can meet less frequently

Confidentiality – All sessions are fully confidential unless I have serious concerns about your safety or the safety of others.

    WORKSHOPS

As an artist I feel passionate about the language of art and its ability to communicate on a different and often more subtle level than that of oral and written language. My aim is to enlist the power of this language to help individuals discover elements of themselves, their relationships to others and their relationship to life in general.

I am not interested in the more usual term of ‘Art Therapy’ where artworks are analysed in great detail in relation to the individuals who produce them. My interest lies in empowering individuals through the process of creativity. Emphasis is laid upon the process not the product, the emotions felt and the dialogue enabled between the creator and the creation.

This idea was inspired by the work of Michele Cassou, a painter, teacher and writer based in the USA. She has written two books about spontaneous expression; ‘Life Paint and Passion’ and ‘Point Zero – Creativity Without Limits’ These two books set out a program designed to free the creative spirit within.

What attracted me to her work was the suggestion that the creative process was directly linked to the subconscious and that this process enabled the subconscious psyche to speak, through its own simple but powerful language. Much can be silently learned about the self and ones inter relationships which transcends normal speech and the written word.

These workshops are a hybrid form of therapy that brings together movement, hypnosis and painting designed to free the unconscious and unleash its powerfull language.

I would like to thank you for helping me when I most needed it.

Being very professional your empathetic approach was very good at getting to the key issues quickly. Sorting through my constant chatter, helping me believe in myself and never judging. I felt you knew exactly what I was going through. Then gently encouraging me to find my own answers. Helping me to separate the different problems and then taking one at a time. Your knowledge and insight allowed me to look at things differently. I always came away thinking, “I can do this!”
