Who can benefit from reflexology?

Reflexology is suitable for all ages and may bring relief from a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. After having completed a course of reflexology treatments for a specific condition, many people find it beneficial to maintain health and well-being. Whilst many people use reflexology as a way of relaxing the mind and body and counteracting stress, at the same time many doctors, consultants and other health care professionals recognise reflexology as a well established, respected and effective therapy.

With ever increasing levels of stress, it is important for people take more responsibility for their own health care needs.

Reflexology helps us to cope on a physical mental and emotional level thereby encouraging us to heal and maintain in all area of our lives.

Reflexology should be avoided if you are in the first three months of pregnancy, or if you have a thrombosis or embolism.

How Reflexology Works

Crystalline deposits of waste products, usually calcium and uric acid accumulate around nerve endings on the foot and often feel crunchy. A swelling or ‘squidginess’ indicates possible problems in the related zone. Working on a point helps crush the crystals and stimulate circulation so that the ‘Lymph System’ can more easily eliminate them. This helps to detoxify the body.

Reflexology aids relaxation which helps to balance emotions, is an antidote to stress and promotes restful sleep. As reflexology relaxes the muscles in the body this also helps to improve blood flow to the organs and thus increases healthy circulation.

Reflexology stimulates the nervous system via nerve endings which encourages the opening of neural pathways allowing messages to travel unimpeded so that all the organs and systems of the body may be able to work together effectively.

Stimulating the pituitary gland releases endorphins, the natural pain killing hormone the body has, this will induce a feeling of well being and calm.

Reflexology has many health benefits and a key benefit is the lowering of stress levels because stress management is pivotal in maintaining overall good health.

Perhaps one of the main benefits of reflexology is the power of having an excellent client practitioner relationship and taking essential time out! All too often we simply don’t STOP!

We don’t always allow ourselves time to rest and recover mentally, physically or emotionally.

After The Treatment

Following a treatment most people have a feeling of well-being and increased relaxation; sometimes after a treatment you may feel tearful or have a temporary worsening of an ailment. This is a perfectly normal occurrence that will pass as this is the body allowing itself time to heal and is known as the ‘healing crisis’.

Remember to always feedback to your practitioner any physical, mental, emotional or spiritual changes you experience so the therapist can understand the overall effect and progress of the treatment plan.

To gain maximum benefit from your treatment, try to rest afterwards - this helps your body's natural healing process. Drink plenty of water after a treatment as this will help to flush away toxins and impurities.
