Welcome to Rebecca Hodson Acupuncture

I am a traditional acupuncturist, located in South Oxfordshire between Henley-on-Thames and Reading. Here you can find out about me, how acupuncture works and what you can expect when you come for treatment.

Traditional acupuncture is a healthcare system based on ancient principles which go back nearly two thousand years. People seek treatment for many reasons, from muscular aches and pains, to migraines, depression or simply to feel more energetic and better in themselves.

The underlying principle of acupuncture treatment is that illness and pain occur when the body's 'qi', or vital energy, cannot flow freely. By inserting ultra-fine sterile needles into specific acupuncture points, the treatment seeks to re-establish the free flow of qi to restore the body's equilibrium and trigger the body's natural healing response.

What is acupuncture?

Traditional acupuncture is a branch of traditional Chinese medicine - a tried and tested healthcare system that has been practised for thousands of years in China and the Far East. It has been developed, tested, researched and refined over centuries to give us a complex and detailed understanding of the body's energetic balance.

It has a very positive model of good health and function, and looks at pain and illness as signs that the body is out of balance. The overall aim of acupuncture treatment, then, is to restore the body's equilibrium. What makes this system so uniquely suited to modern life is that the physical, emotional and mental are seen as interdependent, and reflect what many people perceive as the connection between the different aspects their lives.

Based on traditional belief, acupuncturists are trained to use subtle diagnostic techniques that have been developed and refined for centuries. The focus is on the individual, not their illness, and all the symptoms are seen in relation to each other. Each patient is unique; two people with the same western diagnosis may well receive different acupuncture treatments. This holistic approach means that people seek acupuncture treatment for many different reasons, for a specific health condition, to enhance their sense of wellbeing, feel revitalised or gain a sense of relaxation.

The Latest Research…
When making decisions about our health we all want to make informed choices. To assist patients, the British Acupuncture Council has produced a series of factsheets on research into the use of acupuncture for a wide range of conditions including:
  • Musculoskeletal pain, sciatica, sports injuries and arthritis
  • Gynaecological & infertility issues
  • Headaches & migraines
  • Stress, anxiety & depression
  • Insomnia
  • Skin problems
  • Digestive disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome, nausea and vomiting
  • Allergy
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome.

Treatment

Your first consultation
During your first visit I need to gain a thorough understanding of your main complaint and your general health and lifestyle. This involves asking questions about your current symptoms and your medical history, as well as such things as your sleeping pattern, your appetite and digestion, and your emotional wellbeing. You might feel that some questions appear unrelated to your condition but the information you give helps to form a more complete picture of your overall wellbeing. I will also take your pulse on both wrists, examine your tongue and feel for areas of muscular tension or pain.

Treatment plan and treatment
Based on all the information you have given, I will make a diagnosis and put together your treatment plan, which may include lifestyle and dietary advice as well as acupuncture. Very fine single-use pre-sterilised needles are used to stimulate specific acupuncture points on your body. Because energy meridians range across the whole body, the points used are not necessarily close to where you experience pain or discomfort. For example, if you suffer from headaches needles might be inserted in your arm or leg.

About Rebecca

LicAc, BSc(Hons), MBAcC, BA
I graduated from the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading, one of the most respected acupuncture colleges in Britain, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Acupuncture and am a member of the British Acupuncture Council, the largest professional body for the practice of traditional acupuncture in the UK. As a BAcC member I am bound by their codes of professional conduct and safe practice ensuring the highest standard of treatment. My interest in acupuncture came from my own experience of acupuncture treatment and of the enormous benefits to myself and my family. I was drawn to finding out more about the theory behind the positive changes I had experienced and to learn how to practise Chinese medicine.

I practise an integrated style of acupuncture, combining the two schools of acupuncture, Five Element Constitutional Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). I also incorporate Tuina (Chinese Remedial Massage) into my practice.

Before studying acupuncture I worked for 12 years in radio, producing documentaries and current affairs programmes for the BBC. I currently live in Oxfordshire with my partner and two children.

Testimonials

"I began seeing Rebecca after having suffered every month with my periods; heavy bleeding, headaches, mood-swings and lack of energy. I noticed an immediate change in my energy levels, and with continued sessions my periods got significantly lighter and my headaches have all but disappeared. Acupuncture has made an overall change to my health, with increased energy, better sleep and I feel more like myself than I have done in a very long time."

CO, Highmoor

"I have suffered for years from headaches and migraines some of which are so debilitating they will wipe me out for 3 days. Doctors have prescribed numerous drugs but to no avail. After a particularly bad period I decided to give acupuncture a try having been recommended Rebecca via a friend.

I immediately felt at ease with Rebecca. I was ushered into a tranquil treatment room where we discussed all aspects of my health and lifestyle. Rebecca listened and advised before explaining how acupuncture worked and what my treatment plan would be. I found the treatment to be very relaxing (not painful at all) and the effects were immediate. After an initial month of weekly sessions the headaches and migraines stopped and I felt an over whelming sense of well-being. I also noticed other improvements such as warmer feet (which were always cold!)

I now visit Rebecca for maintenance sessions. I have the odd mild headache but compared to before this is a 99% improvement - I only wish I'd seen her sooner. I would have no hesitation in recommending Rebecca - she is friendly, calm, professional and above all fantastic at curing headaches!"
