Qigong Explained

Qigong is a way of directly experiencing and opening to the subtle energy known as Qi in oriental medicine. It connects us more deeply to the natural flow of energy around us and to the source of our aliveness. Benefits of Qigong may include increased vitality and mobility, enhanced clarity of perception, the development of inner stillness, the clearing of chronic illness and, most of all, a deeper enjoyment of being alive.

Qigong’s origins lie in the preliterate society of China some 5000 years ago. It is said to be the root of all Chinese medicine as well as the basic method through which the subtle energy body was first observed and mapped, leading to the the system of meridians and points used by acupuncturists and bodyworkers. The earliest recorded Qigong is the practice of imitating the sound and movement of animals, such as the deer or bear, to develop the special powers perfected in each animal.

Qigong differs from most western trainings in its emphasis on relaxation and not-trying as key methods. Yet within the field of Qigong there are many and varied styles ranging from the sitting and meditative through to the exuberant and martial. It is the subject of extensive research in China and is fast gaining ground in the west both as a method of health maintenance and as a path of personal spiritual growth.

About Hua Gong Training

Hua Gong focuses on health and healing, artistic creativity, and the spiritual aspects of Qigong practice. It is simple to learn, yet rich enough to become a lifelong practice.

Hua means transformation, integration and liberation. The training involves learning various gracefully flowing movements, learning to maintain still postures particularly through the practice of the "Qi ball", sitting meditations, digestive practices, Qigong walking and even sleeping techniques.

Most classes are taught through a monthly daylong format. This enables students to drop deeply into the practice. The first monthly group has been running for fifteen years. It began in Bristol in the mid 1990's and classes have now extended to Cheltenham and Bath.

About Daverick Leggett

Born and bred in southern England, Daverick Leggett worked as a farmer and then school teacher before beginning a career as a shiatsu practitioner in the early 80’s. Through shiatsu he was introduced to both Qigong and Food Energetics, the two areas which were to become his lifework.

He has trained continuously in the Huagong style of Qigong with Qigong master Zhixing Wang since meeting him in 1991 and is now one of his senior instructors. He runs several trainings throughout southwest England ranging from regular classes through to summer camps and is the co-founder of Qigong Southwest.

His books on nutrition are standard works for many acupuncture and oriental medicine schools and he is a frequent lecturer at conferences and acupuncture schools. The titles of his two books (Helping Ourselves and Recipes for Self-Healing) contain the essential intent of his work: finding ways of helping people to help themselves to deeper health and more vibrant living. He is well known both for his pragmatic and accessible teaching of oriental nutrition, and for his ability to help people directly experience the subtle world of Qi.

Daverick lives in Devon, England, with his partner and teenage son.
