What is the role of complementary therapy beside conventional medicine?

Complementary therapies work with conventional allopathic medicine to ensure that the client/patient receives the best possible energy work to bring the client into a place of vibrant well-being.

Holistic Therapies have been around for thousands of years. The Chinese have known about the energy flowing through the meridians for over 4,000 years and developed acu-puncture to tap into and unblock the energy flows. Chinese Medicine uses acu-puncture and herbal remedies while from the Indian sub-continent we have Ayurveda - 'the Science of Life' - a system that has been around for 5,000 years. Ayurveda deals with the principles for maintaining good energy balance and has developed a wide range of therapeutic measures to combat disturbances within the body. These principles relate to mind-body and spirit of human beings.

The North American Indians practised herbal medicine as did many of the women in Europe.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the ancient science of healing, relaxing and energizing by the use of plants and their parts.

The roots, barks, flowers, fruits, seeds and nuts play a crucial part in this science. It is one of the more popular branches of alternative medicines. The word aromatherapy is derived from two words aroma which means smell and therapy which stands for healing.

Essential Oils

Essential oils form the basis of aromatherapy. These essentials oils are the extracts of plants and their parts and form their life force. These oils are extracted by the means of steam distillation, cold expression, or fixed oil or alcohol extraction.

They are highly concentrated and should not be used directly. These oils can be blended together and this blend is called synergy. The synergy is more potent than the individual oils combined.

To reduce the potency of these oils, you can dilute them by mixing them with carrier oils. These oils affect your mood. They enter through our olfactory system and affect the nervous system, thus improving mood and relaxing or energizing us.

This helps is alleviating stress and speeding up healing. These essential oils also have cosmetic properties and can be used in skincare and hair care products. Many of these oils have known anti-viral, antifungal and antiseptic properties. They are also used in household products for cleaning and antiseptic uses.

These oils can be inhaled, massaged onto your body, added to the bath or shower or sprayed in the room. The essential oils used in aromatherapy are the life force of the plants from which they have been extracted. These oils can be massaged on your body, inhaled, added to your bath or sprayed in the air. When you take "Aromatherapy massage" with the essential oils, these oils are absorbed into the bloodstream via the skin.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is probably the most commonly offered and best known type of massage.

If it’s your first time at a spa, Swedish massage is the perfect place to start.

During Swedish massage Therapists use massage oils to facilitate smooth, gliding strokes over the entire body. Swedish massage moves include kneading, friction, stretching and tapping.

Swedish massage uses firm but gentle pressure to promote relaxation, ease muscle tension and create other health benefits.

If you want deeper work and can tolerate more pressure, even some momentary discomfort to get relief from muscle stiffness and pain, it's better to book a deep tissue massage, which is another form of Swedish massage.

Generally during a Swedish massage you’re nude under a towel or sheet, only the area being worked is uncovered, known as draping. Most newcomers may keep their underwear on, this is ok.

Always feel free to state your preference for pressure during a Swedish massage, which can range form light to firm. And can be firmer on areas that of specific muscle tension.

Before the massage, the therapist should ask you about any injuries or other conditions that he or she should know about.

Things you would want tell a therapist include areas of tightness or pain, allergies, and conditions like pregnancy. You can also tell them up front if you have a preference for light or firm pressure. It's best not to get a massage if you are ill. After the consultation, the therapist instructs you how to lie on the table -- face up or face down, and underneath the sheet or towel -- and then leaves the room. He or she will knock or ask if you are ready before entering.

Kiatsu

KI-atsu uses the spirit, energy from Aikido to devise a form of martial arts massage that uses pressure points to relieve pain and soreness in the any part of the body. There are many exercises and techniques that help to teach this and each have a specific function and an experienced masseur will show you how to do them at home.

Aikido

Aikido is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba as a synthesis of his martial studies, philosophy, and religious beliefs. Aikido is often translated as "the Way of unifying (with) life energy" or as "the Way of harmonious spirit."[Ueshiba's goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury.

Aikido is performed by blending with the motion of the attacker and redirecting the force of the attack rather than opposing it head-on. This requires very little physical strength, as the aikidōka (aikido practitioner) "leads" the attacker's momentum using entering and turning movements. The techniques are completed with various throws or joint locks.

Ueshiba's senior students have different approaches to aikido, depending on when they studied with him. Today aikido is found all over the world in a number of styles, with broad ranges of interpretation and emphasis. However, they all share techniques learned from Ueshiba and most have concern for the well-being of the attacker.
