Welcome to Origin Acupuncture

Traditional Five Element Acupuncturist - Aberdeen city centre, Garthdee, and Aberdeenshire

Rachael Gaskell Lic.Ac.BA(Hons)

I qualified from the College of Traditional Acupuncture in 2006 with a Licentiate in Acupuncture and BA Honours. At the time CTA was one of the oldest and most established colleges of Chinese Medicine in the UK, its pioneer JR Worsley, was responsible for bringing 'Classical' or 'Five Element Acupuncture' as it is known today, to the west. On qualifying as an Acupuncturist I worked from two busy multi- disciplinary clinics in Manchester for three years. In 2009 I moved to Norway where I set up practice again. I returned to the UK in 2012 and I now work as an Acupuncturist in Aberdeen city centre and Aberdeenshire. I have experience in treating a wide range of patients with a variety of complaints.

I am committed to high standards of care and professionalism and observe strict codes of conduct and safe practise. I am always willing to discuss your needs or answer any questions you may have either in person or by phone or email. All enquries and treatments are confidential.

Why Acupuncture?

After receiving Acupuncture treatment as a teenager I was amazed at the remarkable effect it had. I have been receiving treatment myself for over 25 years. As well as enjoying the effects when I have a treatment myself, I love seeing the changes in my patients and their conditions or problems improving or resolving. Over the past 10 years whilst working as a Traditional Acupuncturist, I've been lucky to treat a wide range of people with varying ailments and problems. Within that spectrum I have developed experience in treating menstrual issues, fertility and IVF. I have a special interest in treating fertility and also in stress and adrenal exhaustion. However, I enjoy the challenge of treating whatever walks though my door; the beauty of acupuncture is that it is tailored to the individual, it's about improving health on all levels as well as reducing symptoms.

What Can Acupuncture Treat?

Acupuncture works to help maintain your body's equilibrium. It involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to regulate the flow of 'qi', your body's vital energy. For a number of lifestyle and environmental reasons, qi can become disturbed, depleted or blocked, which can result in some symptoms of pain and illness or. In certain instances, Traditional Acupuncture can be an effective therapy to help restore balance and promote physical and emotional harmony. It can work in conjunction with any medical treatment you are currently recieving and benefits can be felt on a physical, mental and emotional level. It can help to alleviate a wide range of health complaints and issues, both physical and emotional. The misconception is that it is just for pain or addiction, and whilst it is very useful in these cases its benefits are far reaching. In Chinese medicine, body, mind and spirit are seen as a whole, and of course unique to you, therefore, the treatment plan for every individual is different, and is based on your individual needs. I am always happy to discuss the possible benefits of treatment with you; please feel free to contact me with any questions.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient form of medicine, dating back over 3000 years. Acupuncture helps the body to heal itself by stimulating it through the insertion of fine, hair thin needles into acupuncture points. The Eastern theory behind acupuncture is based on the idea that the body contains channels of energy (meridians) and along these channels there are places where the energy (Qi) collects or pools. Using needles to manipulate the Qi causes a subtle change in the body. The reason why this happens is still uncertain; from a western perspective we know that acupuncture has an effect on brain waves and endorphins. Research has also shown that during needling the hypothalamus is affected, this in turn controls our pituitary gland, which in turn influences our hormones. Increasingly research is showing the benefits of this gentle, restorative treatment.

Treatment methods

As well as needles there are other methods used during treatment. These will be chosen based on the kind of condition you have.

Needling

The needles are stainless steel, single use and sterile. They are inserted into the skin, superficially, in varying points across the body. Sometimes needles are left in for a little while, and sometimes they are inserted and then removed immediately. When the needle is inserted often people feel very little. Sometimes a sensation is experienced - in my experience people often liken it to a dull ache.

Cupping

Cupping therapy is used to stimulate Qi, usually locally. It is ususally used on the back . It is excellent for muscular problems and interestingly helps to expel coughs and colds. It can cause localised bruising but the process is not painful.

Moxibustion

'Moxa' is a dried form of the herb 'mugwort'. it is used either directly on the skin or in the form of a moxa stick held over the skin. It helps to warm up and stimulate the flow of blood and Qi. It does not burn the patients skin.
