Welcome to NR Alternative & Holistic Therapies

Nilam Shah, of NR Holistic Therapies, is an experienced Reflexologist and a Reiki Master. She works with the holistic approach to treat using the metaphysical aspect.

She has been practicing Reflexology since 1994, Reiki since 1997 and teching Reiki since 2002. Other therapies include Indian Head massage and Aromatherapy.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a complementary therapy that works on the reflex points on the feet and hands enabling the body to heal itself. Reflexology can be used to restore and maintain the body's natural equilibrium and encourage healing by applying pressure on the points to release energy blockages.

Thumbs and fingers are used to apply pressure to the feet and hands. For each person the application and the effect of the therapy is unique.
"Sensitive, trained hands can detect tiny deposits and imbalances in the feet"
Working on these points releases blockages and restore the free flow of energy to the whole body. Tensions are eased, and circulation and elimination is improved. This gentle therapy encourages the body to heal itself, often counteracting a lifetime of misuse.

Who Can Benefit From Reflexology?

Since reflexology treats the whole person, not just the symptoms of disease, most people can benefit from treatment.

Reflexology is suitable for:
  • Stress related conditions
  • Children and adults
  • Sports injuries
  • Preventative therapy
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Acute and chronic conditions
  • Migraines and Headaches
  • High blood pressure
  • Poor blood circulation
  • Stress and Tension
  • Insomnia (Sleep disorders)
  • Allergies and sinus problems
  • Premenstrual syndrome
  • Backache and sciatica
Usually a treatment session lasts between 30 minutes to 1 hour. A course of 7 to 12 treatments varies in length depending on your body's needs. After the first treatment or two your body may respond in a very definite way: you may have a feeling of well-being and relaxation; or you may feel lethargic, nauseous or tearful, but this is transitory.

No need to remove clothes other than socks.

Testimonials

I asked some of my patients if they would be willing to share their experience and what they say to me onto a web page, here are a few I would like to share with you:

Manish Patel: "I have been introduced to reflexology since October 2006. I began to see Nilam as I suffer from epileptic fits. Since beginning the treatments the frequency of the fits has decreased. It has also helped me to think positively, feel positive and be positive. The treatments have helped me to deal with stress and have given me a clearer understanding to my inner self.

"I am now managing to deal with the fits as they are almost gone. I would recommend others to try reflexology for themselves. I will definitely contact and come back for more treatments if I need them in the future."

Anjli Rajani: "It's such a corny thing to say that experiences in life can literally "change your life", but that was my experience with Nilam and her particular approach to reflexology. Her holistic approach helped me to both recognise the "imbalance" or blocked energies in my body and also provided me with practical ways to learn more about myself and to re examine the way that I approach life.

"I now feel that I learn something new about myself and others every day and I have gained an appreciation for and a tolerance for life and for the people in it!. Many thanks Nilam."

Indira Mandalia: "I started reflexology treatment with Nilam in April 2007. I found the reflexology treatment extremely relaxing. The experience is different from the one I had previously from another practitioner as Nilam treats the ailments using the reflexology points with emotions that have caused the pain in the first place. I like this holistic approach after every treatment I feel better within myself and thus able to face life in a new prospective. I would recommend everyone to try out this way of treatment for themselves and feel in control of their own lives."

Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese word meaning “Universal Life Energy” and this energy infuses all living things. Reiki is a holistic, natural, hands-on energy healing system to balance the body, mind and spirit, a relaxation technique that promotes self-healing. Reiki involves the transfer of energy from practitioner to patient to enhance the body’s natural healing. The innate wisdom of each person's body uses the energy where it is needed most.

"It is a non-invasive, gentle treatment"

Reiki sessions are done with the client fully clothed, and lying on a table or sitting in a chair. There is a gentle laying on of hands on a number of areas of the body. An incredibly deep sense of relaxation and peace melts away tension, allowing the Life Force Energy to flow more freely throughout the body.

"Dis-ease = the body out of balance"

Reiki:
  • Supports the body's natural ability to heal itself.
  • The healing takes place simultaneously at all five levels – physical, mental, etheric, emotional and spiritual.
  • Reduces stress and promotes relaxation and calmness.
  • Energizes and Revitalizes the body and mind.
  • Cleanses the body of toxins.
  • Strengthens the immune system.
  • Promotes an overall feeling of well-being.
  • Facilitates healing for: Insomnia, Fatigue, Anxiety, Depression and Many other symptoms.

Learn Reiki

It is based on the attunements which open you up to the Reiki energy. Once this pathway is established you are able to channel Reiki for the rest of your life using the energy for growth, self development and healing for yourself.

Once you have been attuned Reiki I, the energy will flow through your hands whenever you touch with the intention of healing or helping. Once you have received the first degree attunements, you will have this ability for life.

"Reiki can safely be used in combination with orthodox medical care and other complementary therapies"

It combines well with many alternative therapies, including Acupuncture, Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Kinesiology, Counseling and will increase their effectiveness and decrease the time required to see positive change.

Sometimes people find that with regular Reiki treatments their dependence on medication may be reduced. For example someone on thyroxin may find that the thyroid gland is kick started by the Reiki, therefore for a time they could have symptoms of excess thyroid production until the medication is adjusted appropriately.

It is therefore recommended to advise people on thyroid or diabetic medication of this possibility so they can be prepared to contact their GP if necessary. It may even be appropriate to let their doctor know beforehand that they are receiving Reiki if they are on Thyroxin or diabetic medication.

There are 2 Reiki courses available:

Reiki I: No prior knowledge required. Click HERE for course details.
Reiki II: Must have done Reiki I. Click HERE for course details.

Next course - REIKI II 4th and 5th June, 2011

Acupressure

Acupressure is the application of physical pressure to the body to affect the flow of energy in the body (called ‘Chi’, ‘Ki’ or ‘Qi’) in the 14 meridians (energy channels) for the benefit of your health.

"Acupressure aims to release blocked energy by stimulating specific points, or ‘acupoints’, along the body’s energy channels"

Pressing firmly on the proper acupoints can promote energy flow to a part of the body that is experiencing difficulty, thereby enabling it to heal itself more readily.

What are the benefits of acupressure?

Acupressure aids alleviation of acute and chronic conditions. An acupoint can be worked on for specific conditions – for example, pressing a point on the top of the foot may help to ease migraine. Acupressure is also known to aid your health in a number of other positive ways:
  • reducing stress and tension
  • increasing blood circulation
  • aiding in the removal of toxic wastes
  • providing relief from head, neck and shoulder aches
  • promoting healing
  • increasing energy levels
  • and increasing feelings of well-being.

Massages

Massage therapies are for women only.

Aromatherapy

It is the use of essential oils in holistic treatments to improve physical and emotional well-being. Essential oils, extracted from plants, possess distinctive therapeutic properties, which can be utilised to improve health and prevent disease. These natural plant oils are applied in a variety of ways:
  • Massage (most used method)
  • Baths (add a few drops to warm water)
  • Inhalations (not for asthmatics)
Aromatherapy is an especially effective treatment for stress-related problems and a variety of chronic conditions.

Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage also known as ‘Champissage’ is based on the ayurvedic system of healing and goes beyond simple head massage. Along with the head and hair, it includes physical massage to the face, neck, shoulders and upper arms and more subtle form of massage which affect the energy centres called chakras.

It is a safe, simple and effective therapy that promotes hair growth and provides relief from aches and pains.

  • Relaxes connective tissue.
  • Aids in the elimination of accumulated toxins and waste products.
  • Reduces the effects of stress and tension.

  • Swedish massage

Swedish massage - (which is a proper name, not a reference to Sweden) refers to a collection of techniques designed primarily to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart.

    Benefits:
    • Relaxes muscles. Increase circulation.
    • Remove metabolic waste products.
    • Speed venous return from the extremities.

    • Stretches the ligaments and tendons, keeping them supple.
    • Stimulates the skin and nervous system.

    Magnetic Therapy

Magnetic Therapy is based upon the use of magnets on and around the acupuncture points of the body. Applying Magnetic Therapy helps to build new cells to rejuvenate the tissues of the body. It is a natural way of stimulating your body to combat pain.

Some types of illness and pain are associated with imbalances in the biological electric and magnetic fields. Magnet therapy realigns the fields to correct imbalances and bring relief in a number of common conditions including : Arthritis, Joint and muscle pain, shoulder pain, back ache and neck ache, period pain and stress.

"It sounds too simple to be true, yet it has been used for thousands of years. Any Living thing can be treated with magnetic therapy, humans, animals, insects as well as plants."

Magnet therapy is the application of magnets to the body to stimulate the nerves and create a better blood flow to various parts of the body thus helping the organs and glands to function better.

Magnet Therapy is a clinical system in which the human ailments are treated with magnets of various size and strengths and use both north and south poles together or individually. Magnetized water and juices are also used in conjunction with magnet application.

    Chakra Balancing

Chakras are centres of energy in the body.

"There are seven main chakras which are located on the midline of the body"

Imbalance in the chakras leads to disharmony and discomfort.
    It helps to:
    • harmonises the flow of energy.
    • relaxes and calms the mind.
    • helps remove chronic blockages.
Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning wheel, or vortex, and it refers to each of the seven energy centers of which our consciousness, our energy system, is composed.

The chakras are not physical. They are aspects of consciousness in the same way that the auras are aspects of consciousness. They interact with the physical body through two major vehicles, the endocrine system and the nervous system. Each of the seven chakras is associated with one of the seven endocrine glands, and also with a group of nerves called a plexus.

    Su-Joke

The Korean word 'Su' means hand whilst the word 'Jok' means foot. The hand clearly reflects the whole body. The hand is regarded as yang while the foot is yin. It is very effective to treat both the hands and the feet.
