ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture originated in China and other far eastern cultures, and is based on the concept that the mind and body need to be in perfect balance for optimum health. The body has 12 meridians that form a network through which your vital energy, known as “qi”, flows.

Acupuncture involves inserting very fine needles into specific parts of the body to rebalance your flow of qi, to maintain your body’s equilibrium and improve your health and wellbeing.

The flow of qi through the body can be disturbed by many factors, which can be physical, mental and emotional. Acupuncture is designed to stimulate the body’s own healing response to restore natural balance and resolve these issues.

WHAT IS IT USED FOR?

Acupuncture is primarily used to ease symptoms of pain and discomfort, but is also useful in helping with a wide variety of conditions, such as dental pain, nausea and vomiting, tension-type headache and as a temporary adjunctive treatment for osteoarthritis knee pain.

Some people also choose acupuncture as a way to maintain good health, as a preventive measure, or to improve their general sense of wellbeing.

Because traditional acupuncture aims to treat the whole person rather than specific symptoms in isolation, it can be effective for a range of conditions.

Acupuncture is a very safe form of treatment, which has few side effects or complications. Combining acupuncture and Tui na massage can be particularly effective in treatment of pain. You may also notice other niggling problems resolve as your main health complaint improves.

Acupuncture is now widely used and accepted all over the world. In fact, in 2009 the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommended that acupuncture should be made available on the NHS for the management of persistent, non-specific lower back pain.

MASSAGE

Types of massage
  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage
  • Therapeutic massage (including hand and feet)
  • Tui na massage
  • Myofascial Release
  • Sport and Remedial Massage
  • Swedish Deep Tissue Massage
My skills, experience and training have all enhanced my belief that the body should always be treated as holistically as possible. I talk to my clients about overall health, nutrition, lifestyle and stress factors, so that the treatments I provide are not completed in isolation, and I often provide information about techniques that can be tried out at home.

This holistic approach to health and healing is extremely effective, which is why I offer combined services that bring the benefits of both massage and acupuncture together for a whole body treatment. Massage therapies and acupuncture work beautifully in combination with one another, as each offers something to support the other.

When we work on a combined treatment, I have more scope to tailor my skills and techniques to your specific needs. I tend to use Tui na massage when combining massage with acupuncture, due to its ancient Chinese roots and understanding of the body’s Qi, or vital energy. Everyone I see has their own unique needs, and combining two types of treatment together is an effective way of meeting those needs in every possible way.

WOMEN'S HEALTH

Acupuncture can provide relief for a variety of conditions that affect a woman’s reproductive health.

MENSTRUATION
Acupuncture is well known to safely and effectively aid women’s menstrual health, across a number of different areas.

ACUPUNCTURE FOR ENDOMETRIOSIS
Endometriosis is when cells like the ones in the lining of the uterus are found elsewhere in the body, resulting in pain, swelling and often painful periods, spotting, dark menstrual blood, and clotting. Acupuncture aids the treatment of endometriosis, which will improve the menstrual cycle, alleviate pain, and increase chances of conceiving.

ACUPUNCTURE FOR POLYCYSTIC OVARY SUNDROME (PCOS)
Polycystic ovary syndrome is an increasingly common condition, where multiple fluid-filled cysts grow on and around the ovaries. This can prevent ovulation and make the menstrual cycle irregular, and is a common cause of infertility. Associated symptoms include excessive hair growth, weight gain and acne.

Chinese medicine is known to effectively treat this condition by tackling both the symptoms and the underlying cause. Severe polycystic ovary syndrome is a difficult and stubborn condition to treat, and it may take up to six months of treatment before good progress is made. Dietary and lifestyle factors also play an important role in the treatment of this condition.

ACUPUNCTURE FOR FIBROIDS
Fibroids are the most common structural abnormality of the uterus and may form in the endometrium of the uterus or protrude into the uterine cavity.

They can be completely asymptomatic however in some women they may cause:
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Constipation
  • Pelvic pain
  • Recurrent bladder infections
Fibroids and polyps can also interfere with fertility and conception as they affect the development of the endometrial lining, making embryo implantation difficult.

In Chinese medicine, fibroids are viewed as stagnated blood that is not moving freely. Acupuncture points are used to move to blood and increase the circulation in the area. Herbs may be recommended along with acupuncture.

PREGNANCY AND BIRTH
Acupuncture is popular with expectant mums, thanks to its natural and holistic approach.

About Me

I’m Monica Daswani, and I’ve been a holistic health practitioner for over 14 years. I specialise in pain-related disorders, stress relief, and relaxation, and often combine acupuncture with massage to ensure my clients get the best possible results from their treatment. I also support women with gynaecological problems and promote pre and post-natal well-being, through my women’s health services.

I initially qualified as a homeopath and wanted to continue my learning of how treating the body as a whole can make a real difference to health. So in 2002 I studied Chinese Medicine and graduated as a qualified Acupuncturist from the London College of Traditional Acupuncture. That same year I achieved a diploma in Anatomy, Physiology and Body Massage from ITEC.

Over the course of the following few years I continued to expand my knowledge and skills, and I achieved the following professional qualifications to support my practice:
  • Tui na (Chinese massage) and Medical Qi Gong
  • Diploma in Lymphatic Drainage Massage from ITEC
  • Post-graduated Diploma in Nutrition
  • Professional Diploma in Sports & Remedial Message Therapy from the Sports Massage Association
  • Qualified Myofascial Release therapist
I take the health of my clients extremely seriously, which is why I have up to date professional accreditations to support everything I do. I’m a member of the British Acupuncture Council, which ensures that its members have appropriate training and follow a strict code of ethics. I’m also accredited to The Complementary Therapists Association.

In my spare time I volunteer with St. John’s Ambulance as a qualified first aider.

I offer services from my private practice in Finchley, as well as from various locations in North London, and have the pleasure of working with clients of all ages and from all walks of life.

Testimonials

"I would like to give a special thanks to Monica for helping me change my health, which has lead to a better lifestyle. Dr JM, Finchley

I have been to regular acupuncture therapy for five years and find it very beneficial. When I first started I had been in constant facial pain for over three months, which no medicines could seem to cure. After the first acupuncture session I was free of 80% pain and following a few more, I was pain free. My health has generally improved and my energy levels are kept high. Recently I experienced a trapped nerve in my spine, which caused pain and numbness down to my knee. Acupuncture cured the pain and numbness over a few visits. FG, Barnet

At the age of 22 I was told by a doctor at a hospital that my promising career of being a HR professional was over. I was diagnosed with a trapped ulna nerve in my right arm, which resulted in swelling to my arm, intense shooting pains and I lost all movement in my hand. Due to over reliance and strain in my left arm, over time resulted in limited use of both my arms. I had just started a new job and was obviously very distressed to have to give it up. So desperate was I to try to turn this around, I spent many months seeing a private physio. However with no avail. I then had a number of treatments on the NHS but still there was no improvement in my condition. I was told that the only option left was to have an operation that was 20% succesful and could have irreversible consequences. I then turned to alternative medicines where I was recommended Monica. Monica used a variety of techniques over 3 months and was able to advise on ways to improve my general health to prevent this problem from reoccurring. During that 3 months I saw dramatic changes. Initially the swelling started to come down and the pain began to subside. I was soon able to start using my arms and my hands. This was a great triumph emotionally and physically for me. It meant that I was able to get my life back on track from opening a bag of crisps to getting a great job! I really do have Monica to thank for this and would strongly recommend her to anyone! Carly, Finchley

I am a solicitor and often face situations that require focus and concentration. I commenced acupuncture treatment with Monica in and it has had a positive effect on my life both at work and at home. My stress levels are now controlled. My blood pressure and breathing is normal and I tend to look at stressful situations in a different context. A further breakthrough was for hayfever so bad that I had to take time off work. I had 4 treatments and the symptoms dissolved… I would recommend Monica, [she] is professional, considerate and always kept a note of my progress and was able to cross reference previous weeks and monitor my condition. XA, Winchmore Hill

Monica has been my acupuncturist for a long time. What keeps me coming back is her professionalism and her ability to connect intuitively with her clients’ needs. Acupuncture has been a life saviour for me where orthodox and other alternative treatments have failed my constant back and shoulder pain. It has helped energised me when my energy level has been low. Coupled with Moxabustion it can promote a deeply relaxed state, release deep tension in the body and allow the body to heal in its own time. Sometimes all it takes are 2 or 3 sessions to relieve weeks of pain and discomfort. M-Y – Healer, Finchley

I have been seeing Monica for Tui na for the last 4 years on a regular basis. I find it useful to improve my circulation and help the pain in my aching heavy legs. RZ, Hendon
