About Me

Welcome – my name is Marie Hurst and I am a massage and Bowen therapist.

My own journey into complementary therapies began 17 years ago when I received my first hand massage. I could not believe how wonderful it made me feel.

I trained at a private college in Altrincham and have since gone on to learn a variety of therapies. I am always developing my massage techniques and have studied Swedish Massage, Aromatherapy Massage and Sports Massage. More recently I learnt “No Hands Massage” which uses the forearms to massage. My enthusiasm is such that in 2002 I went to Thailand to learn Thai Yoga Massage first hand .

I now focus on two main therapies – Aromatherapy Massage and Bowen Technique. These two therapies go a long way in addressing most of the problems client present, be they physical, emotional or mental. I work with private clients as well as local authorities, a local multiple sclerosis centre, schools (I hold the MISP Certificate Massage In Schools Instructor) and carer’s associations. I would love to be a part of your unique journey through life.

Bowen Technique

Bowen Technique is a form of remedial muscle therapy that is gentle and relaxing. It is referred to as the ‘homeopathy of bodywork’. By working on muscles, the fascia and connective tissues the body is able to achieve balance and harmony thus resulting in lasting relief from pain and discomfort. Bowen Therapy embodies a truly holistic approach to health care. It is suitable for everyone, from the newborn, to pregnant mums, to the terminally ill, the elderly and can treat chronic and acute conditions.

What Happens during a Bowen treatment?
Treatment generally lasts between 45 mins to an hour. You do not need to get undressed as it can be done through light clothing. If you are not able to lie on the couch it is possible to perform moves whilst sat. The Bowen moves are very gentle rolling moves performed with fingers and thumbs over specific muscles, tendons or ligaments. The moves are interspersed with periods of rest to allow the body to make any subtle changes.

One requirement of Bowen is that the client does not mix it with any other therapy, in particular a week either side.

Frequency
It is recommended that you have three treatments initially, each one a week apart. A maintenance programme may be suggested with a treatment once every 6-8 weeks.

Who Is It Suitable For?
Bowen is suitable for men, women and children of all ages. Conditions treated include children’s conditions such as autism, asthma, cerebral palsy, colic, ADHD and behavioural problems. Other conditions it can help are neurological conditions such as Bells palsy, a stroke, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, neuralgia, ME, MS, fibromyalgia and Parkinson’s Disease. It can also help migraine, constipation, high blood pressure, stress, frozen shoulders, tennis elbow, tinnitus, sciatica, whiplash and panic attacks. Depression suffers report positive results.

Case Studies

These are genuine case studies from some of clients I have treated. Client details are given with permission and names changed.

Trevor first came to see me aged 14. He has dysexecutive disorder meaning his long term memory is fine but very poor short term memory. Trevor’s mother has said “He has received Bowen treatments for the last 12 months which has aided his current progression through school. His ability to concentrate, to recall, sequence and inform has improved considerably, raising his attainment by 2 grades. The greatest benefit lies in his ability to relax and converse without stuttering, trying to remember words and names.” Trevor himself said “Bowen treatment has helped me to study and concentrate with my school work. I feel a lot calmer and not as nervous.”

Christopher was diagnosed with autism aged 6 and has a number of difficulties associated with the disability. Initially Christopher was anxious about receiving the technique and did not want to attend. After the first session Christopher left stating “It was nice” and that he would come back. Some of the benefits his family have noticed are that he is notably calmer and managing his emotions better; he is managing change a little better, being able to talk through reasons why rather than just reacting; he is more loving, cuddling and kissing.

Simon is 9 years old and is on the autistic spectrum. The feedback his mother gave: “Since Simon has been having the Bowen treatments he has learned to relax more. He has a more relaxed approach to his day to day activities. He is more loving towards myself and he starts conversations with me, whereas before he was unwilling to communicate with me. His relationship with his sister has become more bearable. He will talk to her now about his homework and computer stuff. At school he has had the confidence to join the form football team and enter the football competition. Simon has said he enjoyed it when he closed his eyes and relaxed!”
