  • Headaches

McTimoney Chiropractic

"...is a particularly gentle and effective whole body manipulative technique.

It aims to correct the alignment of the spine and other joints of the body, to restore nerve function, to alleviate pain and to promote natural health. I came upon McTimoney Chiropractic after having
a car accident and was so impressed with the gentle, effective treatment that I wanted more people to enjoy the benefits and so trained as a chiropractor myself.

Chiropractic is as much about educating and explaining lifestyles, work habits and self help etc. as it is about manipulation because this empowers the patient to help themselves.

I have been working as a Chiropractor since 1991 and have also trained in Upledger Cranio Sacral Therapy and as a special interest I work with musicians. receive referrals from other health professionals such as GPs, dentists and homeopaths etc.

I enjoy giving and receiving treatment. I learn something from each of my patients and working with people gives me great satisfaction.

What is Chiropractic and how does it work?

Chiropractic is a straightforward method of adjusting the bones of your body in order to relieve pain and restore movement. The aim of chiropractic is to maintain the correct alignment of your spine, thus ensuring your body’s nerve supply works efficiently.

Your spinal column is made up of 24 moveable vertebrae, the sacrum and coccyx. This column houses the spinal cord, through which nerver information is transmitted to the rest of your body.

When the spinal column maintains correct alignment, nerve information is passed accurately. However if any part of your spinal column becomes misaligned, then a nerve may become impinged, compressed or stretched, distorting the information that passes along it. This can lead to pain, tingling, discomfort or restricted mobility.

Misalignment occurs for many reasons - some of the most common are incorrect lifting, road traffic or sporting accidents, childbirth, falls, stress and poor posture.

What we do

McTimoney Chiropractic is a gentle whole body method which aims to correct the musculo-skeletal alignment and to restore nerve function which promotes natural health.

We use only our hands to make adjustments to the bones of your body. The key to the success of the
adjustments is in the speed, dexterity and accuracy with which they are performed,

What to expect from your first treatment

Your Chiropractor will first take a full case history regarding your general health background as well as
details of your symptoms. This will help to assess and analyse your particular problem. They will then examine the joints in your body from head to toe making the appropriate adjustments where necessary. McTimoney Chiropractors have a finely uned sense of touch, developed in our years of training which enables us to feel for misalignments of the vertebrae and bones. Upon feeling a problem, your Chiropractor will use one of a number of swift and dextrous techniques to adjust the bone. If they suspect a problem which requires medical investigation or an x-ray you will be referred to your OP or another specialist.

The number of sessions you will need

This varies considerably, depending on:

Your age - you generally heal more slowly as you get older.

The nature and seriousness of the problem.

How tong you have had the problem - healing is a process which takes time. Generally yesterday’s injury will resolve quicker than one of 20 years standing.

Your general level of fitness - broadly speaking, the fitter you are, the quicker your body recovers from injury,

Stress levels - high levels of stress can impede healing

Nutrition and lifestyle - good healthy food and plenty of rest help the healing process.

What to do between treatments

Just because you may be feeling better, don’t decide to do strenuous tasks! Allow yourself time to heal and repair.

Most patients need between two and ten sessions - initially at weekly intervals - then gradually more widely spaced out. Once the problem has been eased or resolved, regular six-monthly checkups are recommended to keep your spine and other joints functioning well.

Recommended ways to help yourself

Rest for 20 minutes or as soon as possible after each treatment.

Take it easy for 24 to 48 hours. Avoid doing anything strenuous such as housework or lifting.

Don’t engage in sporting activities such as golf, raquet or contact sports, or exercise classes until your Chiropractor advises you otherwise.

Observe your posture when sitting, standing or driving, and try to be as balanced as possible.

Drink plenty of water as this will help to clear toxins from the body.

Keep to a simple diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and avoid alcohol, tea and coffee until your body has settled down.

Avoid hot baths for at least 24 hours, although warm baths and showers are fine.

Avoid carrying heavy bags on one shoulder or arm as this will put a strain on your neck and back.

How you will feel after treatment

There is a whole range of sensations that you can experience after treatment. The most important thing to remember is that change is a sign that your body is beginning to adapt correctly to the adjustments it has undergone.

Feeling better - relief from pain as your body becomes better aligned can make you feet straighter, taller and altogether more balanced.

Feeling worse before feeling better - while your body is adjusting to its new alignments the shape and size of the painful area may change, or new minor pains and aches may emerge due to positional changes in your body.

You may also find that previous aches and pains recur. These effects will tend to disappear as your body settles down after treatment. And I will help support you through this stage of healing.
Tiredness - you may feel tired after treatment and may sleep welt following the easing of deep tensions within your body.

Headaches - the release of waste products as your body heals can cause headaches. Drinking plenty of water will help flush the toxins out.

Emotional changes - these are quite normal and often reflect the release of tension in the muscles.
Menstrual cycle - periods may become heavier or lighter, less painful or shorter. Any changes usually settle once the body has adjusted to its new alignment.

Dizziness - you may feel light-headed and dizzy due to the release of tension and increased blood flow to the brain.

Medication - anyone taking medication eg. diabetics will need to monitor their medication before and after treatment.

Discover Upledger Cranio Sacral Therapy

How was this gentle therapy developed?

CranioSacral Therapy was developed by Dr. John E. Upledger, an osteopathic physician featured in TIME magazine as one of America’s next wave of innovators.

From 1975 to 1983, Dr. Upledger was a professor of biomechanics at the College of Osteopathic medicine at Michigan State University.

While he was there he led a team of anatomists, physiologists, biophysicists and bioengineers who performed and published the clinical research that formed the basis for the approach he named CranioSacral Therapy.

In 1985, Dr. Upledger founded The Upledger Institute to teach people worldwide about the value of this effective approach. More than 80,000 therapists have since been trained in CranioSacral Therapy.

How can I get help with CST?

CST is a light-touch approach that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance.

Find out how easy it can be to finally feel better and enjoy your life more. Call your CST practitioner for an appointment today, or contact The Upledger Institute UK. See the back page for details.

Why is CranioSacral Therapy so important?

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a light-touch approach that can create dramatic improvements in your life. It releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance.

Few body structures have more influence over your health and well being than your central nervous system. And few body systems have more impact on your central nervous system than the craniosacral system - the soft tissues and fluid that protect your brain and spinal cord.

Unfortunately this can compromise the function of the central nervous system - and the performance of nearly every other system in your body, especially the endocrine system.

CST releases those tensions to allow the entire body to relax and self-correct. Using a gentle touch
- starting with about the weight of a small coin
- practitioners evaluate your internal environment. Then they use distinctive light-touch techniques to release any restrictions they find.
By freeing the central nervous system to perform at its best, CST naturally eliminates pain and stress, strengthens your resistance to disease, and enhances your health and well-being.

And because it’s so gentle, CST can be effective for all ages, from newborns to elders.

What conditions does CST address?

CST improves your body’s ability to take better care of you. It helps relieve a full spectrum of pain, illness and dysfunction, including:
  • Stress and Tension-Related Disorders
  • Motor-Coordination Impairments
  • Chronic
  • Neck and Back Pain
  • Migraines and Headaches
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • TMJ Syndrome
  • Scoliosis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • ADD/ADHD
  • Learning Difficulties
  • Orthopaedic Problems
  • Brain and Spinal Cord injuries
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Infant and Childhood Disorders
  • Central Nervous System Disorders
  • And many other conditions

What can I expect from a session?

A typical CranioSacral Therapy session takes place in a quiet, private setting. You remain fully clothed as you relax on a comfortable, padded table.

Your therapist begins by gently touching various parts of your body to monitor the rhythm of the fluid that is flowing around your central nervous system.

By carefully listening with the hands to locate areas of weak fluid flow or tissue motion, your practitioner can trace those areas of weakness through the body to the original source of dysfunction.

Delicate manual techniques are then used to release those problem areas and improve the form and function of your central nervous system.

A CST session can last up to an hour or more, It can be used alone or integrated with other therapies to create powerful effects.

What you experience from your own session is highly individual. The sessions are generally deeply relaxing, creating feelings of warmth or gentle pulsing in the areas the therapist is working on.
