As well as her wide ranging experience of life issues Liz is a specialist in eating disorders (Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa ) as well as weight management, including overeating and binge eating.

Liz is a Person- Centred Counsellor. This way of working based in Humanistic Psychology, is a belief in human uniqueness and the need to balance intellect, spirit, emotions and the body. It focuses on individual autonomy and responsibilty, and encourages freedom, creativity and choice.

Hakomi is mindfulness based self–assisted discovery. Our past experience informs what we believe about ourselves and how we relate to the world - you usually get what you expect. This way of relating is unconscious, it is an automatic behaviour and often results in unsatisfactory and limiting ways of being. Using mindfulness we can learn skills in self awareness and this offers the possibility for change leading ultimately to a more nourishing experience of life.

Liz provides individual and group Counselling Supervision and frequently runs workshops and training courses on a variety of subjects.

Eating Disorders and Overweight

We can all use eating as an immediate source of comfort, but when we regularly rely on food to be a coping mechanism, it can lead to weight gain and all kinds of other problems.

We use food to help us feel in control of life, to avoid painful feelings like sadness, loneliness and anger. We use it to help us cope, but then that way of coping becomes a problem because we gain weight. This leads to dieting, exercise and sometimes more drastic measures like vomiting. This makes things more complicated and starts to feel like being stuck in a trap with no way out. Apart from feeling horrible, this can start to affect our health, relationships, work and social life. What starts out as a way of helping becomes an even bigger problem.

What are the benefits of this therapy?
  • Understand the root causes of your eating issues
  • Examine the thoughts, feelings and behaviours
  • that maintain the cycle
  • Gain self-understanding and insight, including
  • identifying triggers
  • Improve your eating habits, self image and
  • psychological strength
  • Develop tailor made coping strategies to replace
  • compensatory behaviours such as vomiting, laxatives
  • and over exercise
  • Feel better about yourself

Hakomi and Mindfulness

Mindfulness can be thought of a way to 'watch' what is happening in our mind and body at any moment. Usually we have all kinds of thoughts, feelings, images and sensations that we are not aware of and did not choose to have. Many of these thoughts trigger automatic reactions activated by memories and emotions, this leads to an automatic impulse to react. It's in this way that we find ourselves caught up in a habitual pattern of behaving or relating. It's only with awareness that we start to be able to choose, to give ourselves different options, to find freedom.

What are the rewards of Hakomi?

There are many. Relief from persistent painful emotions and behaviours is probably the greatest reward. And you will gain a much deeper understanding of yourself and with that, more freedom to choose what you'll be able to feel, greater pleasure in everyday living, and to engage in fuller richer more rewarding relationships. Hakomi can achieve all that.
