Reflexology

The origins of Reflexology are found in early Chinese, Indian & Egyptian culture dating back to over 2000 BC. More recent development of Reflexology started in the early 20th Century when an American ear, nose and throat specialist, Dr. William Fitzgerald found that applying pressure upon the fingers produced an analgesic effect on the hands, arms, shoulders and face. From this, he established Zone Therapy, dividing the body into 10 equal longitudinal zones linked to the tips of the fingers.

In the 1930’s Eunice Ingham, a physiotherapist developed zone therapy further when she mapped reflexes on the feet which linked to nerves and energy channels, organ and glands of the body.

How is Reflexology applied?

Reflexology can be carried out on either the feet or hands. Through the gentle pressure technique applied to the surface of the feet or hands, the practitioner will detect response from the body. The approach taken is to treat the whole person, not just dealing with individual symptoms but also, helping to reach the root of a problem reaching the physical, mental and emotional aspects to the person.

How does reflexology work?

Energy within the body can become blocked due to congestion, stress, injury or illness making the body out of balance. By stimulating reflexes on the feet or hands, energy blocks and congestion can be released, and elimination of toxins is encouraged. It helps restore balance to the body which in turn encourages the body to repair and heal itself.

What are the benefits and for whom is it appropriate?

Reflexology is suitable for all ages, being non-invasive, and has proved to be a very safe therapy. It is particularly good for:
    - digestive and bowel condition
    - blood circulation and immunity
    - menstrual and menopausal problems
    - preconception, ante and postnatal issues
    - aches and pains, migraine
    - insomnia,
    - sinus congestion
    - stress and tension in the body.
Treatments are also a practical and pleasant method of relaxing the body so even if you don’t have any specific health problems you would find reflexology would boost both your energy levels and feeling of well-being.

What happens when you attend for a treatment?

The first visit takes approximately 80 minutes and will include a confidential review of your medical history and particular needs will be discussed. The feet will be examined and the reflexologist will apply a lotion to the feet or hands as appropriate. Problem areas are noted and the patient is asked to indicate when they experience sensations other than pressure e.g. tingling, transient tenderness or a hot spots as these indicate the areas of the body that are out of balance. Any discomfort is momentary and the treatment itself is relaxing and soothing.

Any possible reactions (which may occur) from the treatment will be discussed. Thereafter treatment sessions normally last about one hour.

At subsequent treatments, reactions to previous sessions will be noted to ensure maximum benefit is achieved from each session. A reaction is further evidence that your body is responding to the treatment.

Emotional Freedom Technique

Emotional problem are often associated with disturbances in the body’s energy system and negative emotions e.g. fear of flying, spiders are an over-reaction to a situation or thing which really does not pose a threat at all. Phobia and fear can have a very negative effect on your life and influence how you live it. It is not uncommon to find people with one or more of the following fears:
    - Driving
    - Diseases
    - Dentists
    - Flying
    - Heights
    - Injections
    - Insects
    - Open or closed in spaces
    - Public speaking
    - Water
(1 in 10 people suffer with a phobia)

You can do something about overcoming your phobia with Emotional Freedom Technique by learning to tap on selected points of your meridian system.

Panic attacks, anxiety, stress and trauma respond well to Emotional Freedom Technique.
It is suitable for all ages and paced to suit the individual need so you have a tool which you can use whenever the need arises.

Note that therapists do not diagnose or claim to heal disease. Treatment should be used alongside orthodox medicine to complement it.

About your practitioner

Linley King
MBRA, C.P.AMT

I previously worked in a large industrial company and was involved with implementing stress management schemes in connection with a major reconstruction including redundancy programmes.

I became interested in ways to alleviate stress and found, to my personal benefit, the value of Reflexology. . I have trained with the Bayly School of Reflexology (Britain’s first Reflexology training school). I am a qualified member of the British Reflexology Association and an advanced practitioner in Vertical Reflex Therapy (VRT) which uses a new technique for treating orthopaedic and other conditions while feet are weight bearing; it enhances a conventional reflexology treatment.

I am also a certified practitioner in Emotional Freedom Technique. What I like about this technique is that it allows the suffer to regain and take control of aspects of their life which have become an issue for them.

If you feel Reflexology or Emotional Freedom Techniques could benefit you, or you would like

Testimonials

I was ill during 2008 with a viral infection similar to Glandular Fever. One of the issues I experienced at that time, was of pain in my legs and more specifically my feet and heals. I became aware of Linley from visiting a demonstration she held for a local group which dealt with hearing issues, such as Tinnitus. It was from speaking to one of Linley’s current clients at this event which encouraged me to try out Reflexology. I am really glad that I did this because the treatments have been very beneficial. They helped me while I was recovering and not only took my mind off my situation, but also made me feel better for having them. Now that I have returned to full health, I have kept up the Reflexology sessions and built them into my normal routine at regular intervals.
I would thoroughly recommend anyone to try Reflexology with Linley. She is a very competent and experienced practitioner and has a very calming approach to her work. This instils high levels of confidence, which along with her empathetic approach makes the whole experience very relaxing and enjoyable.

Before I visited Linley King I was suffering from uncomfortable hot flushes due to the onset of the Menopause. There was an immediate improvement after my first session of reflexology and after subsequent visits my symptoms have totally disappeared, I am now free of the bane of hot flushes-thank you Linley!
A problem with back pain has also eased significantly after some sessions with Linley carrying out Vertical reflexology!
Linley always makes you feel totally relaxed and de-stressed after each visit.
