Who benefits from the Alexander Technique?

Two case histories give you some idea of the problems which can be helped:

Heather had always been very active but found she was not able to do as much as she used to. She had developed arthritis in her knees and shoulders and she also had a bad back. It was painful to do her usual activities. Over a period of time her lessons have helped to transform herself. The pain and poor mobility have completely disappeared. She feels restored to how she used to be years ago. She also found it a revelation that her own bad habits were the cause of some of her difficulties. She has now been able to stop taking painkillers.

Martin had a motor cycle accident when he was 18y old and damaged his spine. He was in constant pain and could not move well or lift things. Martin recognized how he had developed compensatory habits to protect his back which were infringing on his freedom of movement. He now has much more flexibility, can carry out activities more easily and experiences much less pain.

What happens in a lesson?

Lessons are one-to-one, and the teacher uses their hands to guide your musculature towards a state of ease and freedom.

The touch is very gentle, you don’t need to undress and there is no manipulation or massage. It’s not a therapy, but a learning process, although it’s not book learning. ft’s both mind and body learning. Explanations are given to teach you to use yourself more freely and easily.

The teachers hands subtly influence your neuromuscular system and allow you not only to change during the lesson, but also to continue to work with what was initiated in the lesson and integrate it into your life. Heather and Martin. although their needs were different, were taught the Alexander Technique in the same way.

With the help of an Alexander teacher you can learn how to improve your breathing, balance, co-ordination and movement. It’s not about learning to relax, but, much more effectively, to release tension and stimulate a lengthening of your musculature. This lets you move and go about your life freely and easily. It’s a skill, which, like riding a bike or driving a car, initially seems to have coo many parts to co-ordinate! With practice though the Alexander Technique becomes a part of your life and you wonder how you
managed without it!

Why the Alexander Technique?

Most of us as children move freely and easily. As we grow up our balance, alignment and posture become disturbed, through habitual misuse or injury. This can lead to pain and stress affecting both body and mind. The Alexander Technique can help you to overcome poor postural habits and relieve pain; give you more ease in movement, and a greater sense of well-being and improve the quality of your performance in life. It Is a ‘system of re-education for the mind and body’ devised by an Australian actor. F M Alexander (1869- 1955).

Alexander traced the origin of his own persistent voice problems to habitual poor posture. which he called ‘misuse’. Over several years he devised a new approach to movement which cleared up his problems and also enhanced his well-being. He began to teach his technique to others and they also found the new Alexander Technique benefited them. He moved to London and in 1931 he established a 3 year teacher-training programme.

Teachers study for 3 years to become members of The society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique.
