Therapies I use

EFT

Emotional Freedom Techniques involves tapping on points on the body’s meridians or energy channels while focusing on the emotion or memory or thought pattern that is troubling you. It is my method of choice because, although it is not be as instant or always as painless as people have claimed it to be, it is quicker and less painful than any of the other technique I have encountered as a therapist. Above all, it is the best way to work if , like me, your concern is that working on trauma will not be retraumatizing for the client. I believe many therapies are. I was fortunate to do my advanced EFT training in a small group with its founder, Gary Craig, himself.
I feel that EFT is at its most powerful and its safest when used by therapists with a good therapy framework to inform it. Other techniques that underpin my use of it are:

EMDR

EMDR or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a revolutionary therapy that has N.I.C.E approval as a trauma treatment. It has some similarities to EFT. Its main technique involves bilateral stimulation – moving eyes from side to side or sound from ear to ear or alternating tapping on two sides of the body – while focusing on the problem or feelings to be dealt with. It is also has less risk than most other therapies of re-traumatizing people.
I did my EMDR training shortly after training approved by its founder, Francine Shapiro, first became available in the UK more than ten years ago.

TAT

Like EFT, Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT) is an energy therapy. It combines holding a few acupressure points on your head while you put your focus on a problem. Doing so clears the disruption to the energy system and leaves you with a different perspective. It works well using it with EFT – letting TAT start on a global issue and then using EFT on what TAT throws up. TAT on its own can also be very effective.

I did my TAT training with its inventor, Tapas Fleming

Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy involves using a light trance state – a state in which you can still hear what is said to you - to access unconscious information, resources and solutions. My hypnotherapeutic approach is not about telling people what will make them feel better but encouraging them to discover that for themselves.
My hypnotherapy teachers included leaders in the Erickson field such as Michael Yapko, Ernest Rossi and Brent Geary.

Psychotherapy

My psychotherapy background is integrative which enables me to draw on insights and techniques from a number of different therapy schools. This fits comfortably with my philosophy that, as therapists, it is our job to fit therapy to clients not clients into pre-determined therapy pigeon holes.

Cognitive behavioural therapy

CBT also has N.I.C.E approval. It is an approach that assumes that what we think and how we behave determine how we feel and that challenging thoughts and changing behaviours can help us to feel differently. It works with the conscious mind and is therefore a good complement to approaches that are more directed to unconscious processing and change.
