About Me
Complementary therapist in Fareham, Hampshire

I qualified from the University of Westminster in 2003 with a degree in TCM Acupuncture. A few years down the line and it still amazes me how sticking tiny needles into certain areas of the body can alleviate the most stubborn symptoms. It was my own lack of wellbeing that led me to discover the power of acupuncture – it is always my first treatment option if I am feeling out of balance.

Following graduation, I travelled to China and undertook further clinical training at the Chengdu University Hospital in Sichuan Province. I feel privileged to have been able to practice acupuncture in its homeland and to have shadowed some of the most experienced Chinese doctors in oriental medicine. It was inspiring to witness the integration of conventional and eastern medicine in a hospital setting and proves that the two can work together exceptionally well.

In 2007 I qualified in reflexology and quickly realised what a great partner to acupuncture it is. Then my own feet got a bit itchy again, with an increasing desire to learn more about how the mind can heal the body, I travelled to India hoping to satisfy my curiosity. I had been practising yoga lightly on and off over the years but had not really taken it that seriously. Whilst in India I became very drawn to this ancient way of living and I recognised that there was so much more to yoga than the well known physical benefits. I found a teacher and immersed myself in a daily practice for a few months and later entered the Sivananda Ashram in South India where I completed the teacher training course. I have never been healthier after my stay in India; I returned home with a sense of true peace and wellbeing - and I was finally able to touch my toes!

A short while ago I was suffering from a bout of back pain, since it is very difficult to treat my own back with the those wonderful little needles, I searched the internet to see if I could find someone to help me. I came across the Dorn Method, a German therapy relatively unknown in the UK. I was impressed with the rave reviews from people finally being free from pain having had a Dorn treatment. I have now trained in this therapy and am awaiting my final qualification. I am very excited about the prospect of offering this therapy alongside acupuncture as it is going to take the treatment of back pain and other joint problems to a new level. Watch this space, it's coming soon!

Acupuncture

Acupuncture originated in China and other far eastern cultures wAcupuncture in Farehamhere it still features in mainstream healthcare, both as a stand-alone therapy and in combination with conventional western medicine. Acupuncture is now widely used and accepted all over the world. In the UK more and more people are finding out what acupuncture can do for them.

In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), health is dependent on the body’s energy, this is known as Qi (pronounced 'chee'). In health and balance, Qi flows smoothly around the body through a series of channels known as meridians, if the energy becomes blocked, stagnated or weakened it can result in physical, mental or emotional ill health.

The energy flow can become blocked by a number of factors; these can include emotional states (such as anxiety, stress, anger, fear or grief), hereditary and biological factors, poor nutrition, environmental factors and infections.

Imagine a stream that has become blocked by rocks, causing the flow of water to become disrupted; if you take a stick and move the rocks you restore the free flow of water - this is similar to the way in which TCM style acupuncture works. The acupuncturist inserts ultra fine needles into the skin at specific points called acupoints which then unblocks these pathways and create harmonious flow of Qi through the meridians of the body.

Acupuncture in FarehamAn acupuncturist's aim is to stimulate the body's own healing response and restore its natural balance. Treatment is aimed at the root of your condition as well as your main symptoms. This approach helps with resolving your problem and enhancing your feeling of wellbeing. You may notice other niggling problems resolve as your main health complaint improves.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a based on tReflexology in Farehamhe principle that reflex areas in the feet, hands and ears relate to organs, glands and systems of the body. In a reflexology treatment, pressure is applied to these reflex areas and in so doing reflexology helps to restore health and maintain wellbeing by stimulating the inherent self-healing capabilities of the body, not only on a physical level but mentally and emotionally too, and it is the perfect antidote to stress.

It is said that 70% of illness is stress related. Reflexology reduces stress by generating a deep sense of relaxation, during which time the body is able to rebalance itself and allow for more efficient healing.

Reflexology does this by inducing:

  • Deep muscle relaxation which reduces tension
  • Improved cardiovascular and lymphatic circulation
  • The release of endorphins to reduce pain.

For many years it has been accepted that reflexology works, but it has not been understood exactly how. New research into pressure point techniques revealed some amazing reactions within the body. Research done in Canada and the United States has found that pressure point techniques stimulate signals along the nerves, which run throughout the entire body.

Reflexology stimulates nerve signals to travel through to the central nervous system, into the limbic portion of the brain which is an automatic regulatory centre for the body’s internal structure, organs and systems. This part of the brain recognises these stimulating signals and sends out healing responses, which regulate the body processes to ensure correct functioning in the required areas. Although it is not yet fully understood how this happens or why.

Yoga

'Health is wealth, peace of mind is happiness, yoga shows us the way'
- Swami Vishnudevananda

Sivananda Yoga stems from the teachings of the great Indian Yoga Masters Swami Sivananda and his disciple Swami Vishnudevananda. Sivananda Yoga is one of the three schools that works with a fixed series of exercises (the other two being Ashtanga and Bikram). Founded in 1936 by Swami Sivananda, it is the oldest of the three.

The characteristics of Sivananda hatha yoga are breath work, warm up and sun salutations and 12 basic asanas (postures) with an emphasis on relaxation between all the poses.

When practised regularly, the specific Sivananda blend of classical hatha yoga postures, relaxation and breathing can help you to develop on many levels, improving strength, balance, flexibility, concentration, confidence, as well as general health and wellbeing.

I offer one to one yoga sessions in my treatment room in Fareham or I can come to you providing there is enough floor space. These sessions are particularly good for beginners who may feel a little nervous about joining a class for the first time. I have a six week beginners course which will give you the basics of yoga to enable you to go on to an open class or you can continue to practise Sivananda yoga with me on a one to one basis.
