Naturopathy

Naturopathy is an approach, which addresses the whole picture in its treatment approach and therefore saves you time and money. In countries such as Australia it is part of mainstream healthcare, but in the UK the approach is relatively rare. It is however gaining in popularity due to the fact each treatment plan is unique to the client and a naturopath is able to spend quality time with you to determine the cause of the condition. Naturopaths do not replace GPs but work closely with other practitioners and GPs for various tests and treatments. However, by adopting a project management approach they identify a treatment plan which pulls everything together for you.

A naturopathic approach may work for everything from neck and back tension to more serious conditions. By untangling the various factors contributing to the condition, this enables an order of work to be agreed taking into account time, goals, and budget, reducing stress and allowing you to concentrate on the priorities with a clear understanding and sense of direction.

As an example, different symptoms such as bloating, eczema and hay fever can all be part of the same underlying condition relating to poor digestion. Inadequate digestion is at the root of many health conditions and can be simply and easily treated. By addressing digestion we help alleviate bloating, eczema and hay fever in one action rather than treating many symptoms, costing you less time, stress and money. As a qualified Naturopath I can prescribe the vitamins and herbs your body needs, along with dietary and lifestyle advice and treatments, to help you make a full and lasting recovery.

The sceptics may ask if this approach works. If it did not it would cease to exist and yet the opposite is happening. Naturopathy is gaining widespread acceptance because there are no side effects. Naturopathic treatments are non invasive and can be taken alongside many conventional medicines without side effects.

Above all naturopathy is about educating you in understanding how your body works and how to take control of your life. If you are not in optimal health it may be the approach your body is looking for!
I am part of a national team of naturopaths all with our own key strengths. This enables me to draw on a wide base of expertise. More information at.www.lcmn.co.uk. I work closely with Marion Kirkham ND and was privileged to train extensively under her eagle eye.

Nutrition

What you might expect from a nutrition consultation?

Nutritional Therapy is the application of nutritional science in the promotion of optimum health, peak performance, disease prevention and patient care.

The process starts with a confidential consultation where a thorough investigation into your history will be taken and evaluated. I will then suggest the necessary steps needed to improve your health, this may include simple diet changes, short term use of vitamin, mineral and herbal spplementation and possible testing for specific information such as hormone levels, food intolerances etc. A programme is prepared to match your goals and lifestyle. Monthly follow up appointments check on your progress and are tailored to suit your changing health and stress levels.

I always work in conjunction with any existing medical treatment and medication and check for any contra indications as well as liasing if appropriate with your consultant. Ultimately I am working towards your daily diet providing you with the nutrition you need to remain well. I will tailor sessions to teach you any necessary meal planning, food preperation skills etc if needed. I appreciate you may have had a busy lifestyle and relied solely on prepared meals in the past and may need guidance on how make changes that work with time and travel restraints etc.

Health conditions that may be helped by nutritional therapy include:
  • Stress

  • Migraine
  • Skin disorders including acne, psoriasis, rashes and eczema
  • Sinus congestion
  • Weight problems
  • Food intolerances
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Pre-conceptual care
  • Degenerative disease
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Depression
  • IBS, Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis
  • Asthma
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Blood sugar dysregulation and diabetes
  • Parasitic and fungal infections including candida
  • Persistent genitourinary infections

Massage

Massage is a wonderful tool for creating deep relaxation and releasing muscular tension and benefiting circulation. I am trained in Remedial massage as well as Swedish and Aromatherapy massage, which enables me to tailor each session to you specifically. If you are suffering from eczema, oedema, have had recent surgery, liposuction etc, then you will benefit more from Manual Lymphatic Drainage but I would discuss the options with you at the pre treatment consultation.

I use cold pressed almond oil as a base when massaging which can be combined with organic essential oils or blended with other carrier oils such as avocado, wheat germ depending on your skin type or any specific skin conditions.

I am happy to work with pregnant women and adapt the treatment to suit your needs. I do not treat sport injuries.

Reflexology

Reflexology is the use of special massage and pressure techniques to gently stimulate areas on the feet, which correspond to different parts of the body. The aim is to restore optimum health by encouraging the healing of the mind, body and spirit through relaxation and balancing of the bodies functions. After a session the client usually enjoys a feeling of calm, relaxation and restored well being.
A consultation is essential at your first treatment and the first session will last about 90mins in order for a full consultation to be taken to enable the treatment to be tailored to your particular needs.
A one off session is beneficial but a sequence of between 5 and 7 weekly sessions is recommended for the full benefits to be experienced. After a course regular maintenance treatments are often sufficient to maintain the benefits.

May help with:
  • Stress and emotional issues
  • Digestive disorders
  • Sleeping problems
  • Hormonal problems
  • Circulatory problems
  • Muscular problems
  • Migraine

Many doctors, consultants and other health care professionals recognise reflexology as a well established and effective therapy
Reflexology is safe for pregnant women and elderly. Reflexology does not claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy Massage alleviates stress, releases tension and eliminates toxins held in the body. Specific essential oils may help with particular ailments including muscular aches, skin problems, indigestion, insomnia, anxiety and depression.
Bespoke aromatherapy products can be made specifically for you to use at home between treatments or to treat specific conditions ranging from a complete skincare range, athlete foot cream to bath products.

I work with organic base oils and essential oils and all other base products are free from parabens, sodium lauryl sulphates and fragrance free.

Manual lymphatic drainage

What is it? Manual Lymphatic Drainage is an advanced therapy in which the practitioner uses a range of specialised and gentle rhythmic pumping techniques to move the skin in the direction of the lymph flow. This stimulates the lymphatic vessels, which carry substances vital to the defence of the body, and removes waste products. Each session lasts approximately one hour but may vary depending on the frequency and number of sessions recommended following your initial consultation.
  • Deeply relaxing
  • Promotes healing of fractures, sprains torn ligaments and lessens pain
  • Can improve chronic conditions such as skin conditions, sinusitis, rheumatoid arthritis
  • May strengthen the immune system
  • Relieves fluid congestion: swollen ankles, tired puffy eyes, following liposuction,
  • Suitable during pregnancy and helps minimise or reduce stretch marks
  • Promotes healing of wounds and improves appearance of scars.
  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage is popular in Europe and is rapidly beginning to gain acceptance in the UK in the treatment and control of lymphoedema. It was developed in the 1930s by Dr Emil Vodder. Practitioners have to attend regular reviews to maintain membership.
''Following an accident and subsequent knee operation I had severe odema to my leg which restricted movment. I now have a more comfortable leg with increased flexibilty, making walking and climbing stairs much easier. I also no longer have discomfort with my leg when flying."

Thought Field Therapy

Thought Field Therapy is a simple tapping technique, which is easy to use and highly effective in removing the emotional triggers, which are behind lifes challenges and many health issues. Often only one or two sessions are required making it a quick and cost effective solution. Sounds doubtful to you? Well I found myself on a training session not really knowing much about it, but certianly suffering from flashbacks, anxiety and occasional panic attacks. Quickly and simply they were dealt with. I have one image in particular I use to test from time to time it is still working and it is, the image is clear but there are no associated emotions triggered. One session of tapping against a lifetime of anxiety simply no contest!

The huge advantage to clients is that you do not have to talk in detail about the event, which in itself can create anxiety. Often if you have been assaulted trying to talk about it reduces you to tears so you avoid such situations. Imaging losing the fear that is the trigger behind those tears and still be able to remember and recall the event but talk calmly about it, deal with any legal action calmly or simply move forward and file the experience away as opposed to burying it. I have used it successfully for flashbacks on myself.

More commonly work issues such as dealing with work reviews, presentations job interviews, create anxiety and therefore reduce your effectiveness in such situations. It is an excellent technique for children as well as adults and I have had excellent results with exam stress and business performance.

Below are examples of the type of situations Thought Field Therapy may be helpful:
  • Anxiety
  • Anger
  • Envy/Jealousy
  • Grief/Anguish
  • Phobias and Fears
  • Acute Trauma
  • Relationship Problems
  • Depressed
  • Panic attacks
  • Guilt
  • Pain Management

Thought Field Therapy Treatment

Ttypical TFT algorithm treatment is conducted as follows:
The client is asked to think about their problem, thereby evoking any accompanying distress or discomfort. They are then asked to score that emotion on a 10 or 11 point Subjective Units of Distress (SUD) scale. 1 or 0 on these scales respectively is defined as the total absence of distress, with 10 as the maximum. Children are asked to point to a position on a SUD chart or indicate the dimensions of their distress with their hands, in the same way as a fisherman would indicate the size of a fish.

The client is then asked to use two or three fingers to tap firmly, five to ten times, on specific meridian points as defined in the appropriate TFT algorithm or diagnosed sequence. For example, these might be under the eye, just below the collarbone, the back of the hand, etc.
At this point the client is asked to evoke and score their distress once more. In an uncomplicated treatment a client who reported a SUD of 10 to begin with will now report a 7.

A sequence known as the 9-gamut is then applied. The client taps a meridian point on the back of the hand continuously whilst a series of nine actions, including various eye movements, are carried out.

Once again the client is asked to evoke and score their distress. Typically, the SUD will now be reported as a 4.

The specific algorithm or diagnosed sequence is then repeated.

In a successful treatment the client will now report a SUD of 1 or 0 - or, quite often, say that they can no longer think about their problem. This is, of course, impossible (as the act of trying means that they are thinking about it) and so is taken to be a SUD of 1.
Occasionally, no change in the SUD is reported at one or more stages of treatment. This is indicative of the presence of Psychological Reversal. Once the PR correction appropriate to the stage of treatment has been administered, the predicted change in the SUD then takes place.

As the reader will appreciate, to suggest that such a series of procedures will eliminate, say, a lifelong phobia is verging on the outrageous. It is for this very reason that TFT fails to enjoy a significant, if any, placebo effect. The vast majority of clients do not believe that the treatment will work. When it does, the effect on the client is so profound that they are at pains to deny that it was TFT that led to the resolution of their problem and offer alternative reasons for their recovery. In addition, the treatment procedures work with infants, young children and, it has been observed, with dogs, cats and horses. It is highly unlikely that a placebo effect would be significant in such cases. Whatever the viewpoint, the effects of TFT are predictable, saltatory, replicable by anyone and take place within minutes.
