Herbal Medicine

The History of Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine is as old as civilisation and has been used in most cultures across the globe. Up until the middle of the 20th Century herbal medicine was the main treatment for illness and diseases. All modern medicine is derived originally from ancient herbal traditions. These have evolved to produce what is known in the West as conventional medicine.

Before 1899 medical doctors used herbs to treat patients. The discovery of salicylic acid in that year (extracted from the bark of the white willow tree) led to the introduction of Aspirin. Later the discovery of penicillin in the 1930’s paved the way for the pioneering new drugs of the late 20th century.

Currently the popularity of herbal medicine is undergoing a revival. In fact, there is a growing awareness of alternative medicine, as a whole, among the general public. There is also an increasing demand for professional alternative healthcare including herbalism.

Research is now validating the traditional use of many herbs, people are using herbal medicine for both acute illness and chronic disease, with great success.

Philosophy and Principles of Herbal Medicine

Practitioners of herbal medicine embrace the ethos of holistic health; that is, they treat each patient as an individual, having regard for their physical, emotional and spiritual well-being thereby treating the whole person.

Hence rather than just focusing on a specific set of symptoms, the practitioner investigates the underlying cause of illness by gaining a comprehensive appreciation of the patients unique character and lifestyle as well as the medical history. Thus a relationship is built between the practitioner and the patient in which the patient is encouraged to be actively involved in the process of their own healing.

Herbal Medicine in Practise

Herbalists use remedies made from whole plant material, recognising that herbs which work well for one person will be different from those needed by another. It is ideal for the whole family.

Herbal medicine is as relevant today as it has ever been. Herbalists are committed to working alongside other health professionals and promoting research. Herbal Treatments can be taken alongside medication already prescribed by your GP. The herbs can be given as dried herbs for teas or alcoholic tinctures, capsules, creams, lozenges and syrups.

How Medical Herbalists Work

Consultations are held in the strictest of confidence. On the first visit the consultation will be approximately one hour, during which time a full medical history is taken. It is also vital that any current medication be made known. Where necessary a physical examination, urine or blood pressure test may be taken. Because the practitioner follows a holistic approach they may also offer advice about health management, diet and lifestyle. Follow up visits are usually arranged for 2-4 weeks after the first consultation. More serious illnesses may take up to six months to improve.

Not all prescriptions will be dispensed on the same day. Your herbalist may want to give your case further consideration and will ask you to collect your prescription 2-3 days later or alternatively it can be posted to you. If you are unable to attend your appointment please give 48 hours notice otherwise the consultation fee will be charged.
