Homeopathy - an alternative medical science.

What is homeopathy?

In Homeopathy we do not treat diseases, we treat people who are suffering from dis-ease symptoms. This is a fundamental difference with allopathic or conventional medicine. In allopathic medicine they diagnose a “disease” from a group of symptoms with which the patient is suffering and then attempt to treat those symptoms to eradicate them. In Homeopathy we perceive this differently and see the symptoms produced by the patient’s organism as the attempts of the defense mechanism to overcome the disease disturbance. The symptoms are the outward sign of the inner disturbance and are not the disease itself.

Therefore it makes logical sense to encourage the immune response as much as possible in the gentlest of ways, instead of trying to counter the body’s response at healing itself.

Homeopathy works by encouraging this natural, automatic immune response in the gentlest and safest way to overcome an illness.

..................................................................

How does it work?

The basic principle of homeopathy is to treat “like with like”. What this means is that the body needs certain information in order to overcome its disease. This information has to be “similar” in type in order to help the process of cure. Again this is logical if we are trying to encourage the body’s attempt to get better. Once given the “similar” remedy the body acts on this information in the correct direction ie the natural process of cure that it is attempting. The body therefore is enabled to make a stronger attempt at curing itself and an enhanced immune response.

..................................................................

What are the “remedies”?

Homeopathic remedies are made from natural substances taken from all the 3 kingdoms: plant, mineral and animal.

They are prepared in a special way at homeopathic pharmacies, in which the material substance is diluted and serially “succussed” or shaken. These then become highly dilute but highly potent medicines.

..................................................................

How long does it take?

That depends on the health of the individual, their ability to recover, type of condition etc. However in my research studies I found out that the average number of visits in order to be better was 4 to 6. Of course in more acute conditions the problem may resolve after only one visit.

Consultations for chronic disorders usually take place at monthly intervals and typically last 45 minutes.

..................................................................

Can it be taken alongside conventional medicine?

Ideally the homeopathic medicines are best taken alone without any other medication, however in real life this is often not possible. Many people will already be on conventional medication and the homeopathic medication can be safely prescribed alongside until, if appropriate and safe, with the agreement of the patient and/or their GP, their medication can be reduced slowly. For instance this is how I would start to treat a patient with high blood pressure.

Andrew Ward

Dip.IACH R.S.H

Andrew Ward LCH, Dip.IACH, R.S.Hom is a fully insured and professionally registered classical homeopath. He obtained his first diploma in homeopathy from the College of Homeopathy, London - a three year full-time course that included medical sciences and pathology.

In 1989 he commenced practice under supervision and quickly developed his own busy practice over the following few years. He has been in full-time professional practice for 26 years.

In 1995 he joined the NHS Primary Health Care Team of St Margaret’s Surgery, Bradford-on-Avon as the resident homeopath. This was one of the pioneering NHS homeopathy services in the UK. Patients were referred by the GPs and medical team and several audits were completed, which showed great success at treating many difficult-to-treat conditions seen in everyday general practice. The results of the service were published in a ground-breaking report entitled “ Report on NHS practice-based homeopathy project” by Elizabeth Christie MB ChB MRCPsych and Andrew Ward R.S.Hom, and presented to a select committee of MPs at the House of Commons.
This service continued for 14 years until financial pressures within the NHS forced it to be suspended last year. We hope it will resume at some point in the future.

Since 1994 Andrew has continued his professional development by attending the seminars of Prof.George Vithoulkas in the UK and Greece. For the past 15 years he has continued to study and learn from the world’s leading exponent and teacher of Classical Homeopathy and recipient of the Right Livelihood Award 1996 (Known as the Alternative Nobel Prize) presented by the Swedish Parliament for services to Homeopathy. Andrew has also obtained the Diploma of The International Academy of Classical Homeopathy - Dip. IACH - a 400 hour, three year post-graduate course.
For the last 13 years he has organised annual seminars for doctors and homeopaths from the UK at the Academy in Alonissos, Greece where Prof. Vithoulkas teaches every year, see SUMMER SCHOOL.

Furthermore Andrew has assisted Prof. Vithoulkas at these seminars in the last 6 years - a unique opportunity to learn from a true master.

Since 1995 Andrew has also introduced the Vithoulkas Video Training Course to the UK - a 3-year training course based in Central London. This course enables students to learn the REAL art and science of homeopathy, see VITHOULKAS COURSES.

An associated teaching clinic is also running in Central London. This was set up by Andrew who is the Clinical Supervisor. This takes place at Nelson’s Pharmacy in Mayfair. See TEACHING CLINIC
Andrew also teaches in various Homeopathic Colleges in the UK and abroad. He continues to run a monthly STUDY GROUP at his home which is open to all homeopaths and students.
