About Me

After having 5 children I became a fully insured clinical Reflexologist with level 3 diploma from the Jubilee College under David Wayte, using the most up to date reflexology techniques and I have 12 years experience.

In March 2011 I started training with the internationally renowned Tony Porter to become ART (Advanced Reflexology Training) registered. Tony has been performing and researching reflexology since 1972 and from this he has developed deeper techniques to address the problems, that a lot of standard reflexology barely scratch the surface of. My clients have reported improved circulation and joint suppleness since using these techniques.

I have also attended a workshop on Fertility Issues and Maternity Reflexology. I have training in "Fingers Free Reflexology" which has given me extra reflexology techniques to use with my clients.I am a full member of the Association of Reflexologists AOR, the foremost organisation for maintaining high professional standards. I qualified as an Indian Head Masseuse in 2000 with the Institute for Health and Holistic Therapies. In 2011 I qualified in Hot Stone Massage and the treatment I give is definitely the deluxe version because I use a lot of stones placed on the body, through towels, as well as using them to massage with.

I have also qualified in Deep Tissue and Therapeutic Massage.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a natural, non-invasive form of healing that can have impressive reactions. Reflexology encourages the body's own healing mechanisms.

Reflexes on the feet are said to mirror all the organs and systems of the body. Reflexology is a holistic therapy and by treating the whole foot, the whole person is treated. There are over 7,000 nerve endings in the feet that benefit by first being massaged, which relaxes the body, calms the mind, and gently soothe the emotions. As a trained reflexologist I am able to locate these reflexes and work on them to disperse energy blockages and relieve discomfort. The energy released creates a wonderful feeling of inner peace as tension is dissolved.

Reflexology improves circulation. Stress is one of the reasons for slowing the body's system down and creating malfunctions. Reflexology stimulates sluggish areas and soothes areas that are hyperactive, so they no longer create an energy drain.

Lomi Lomi

LOMI LOMI (meaning massage) comes from Hawaii and the ancient Polynesians and the word “aloha”;“alo” meaning presence and “ha” meaning breath.

It is the ultimate nurturing, full body massage.

As the therapist, it is important to come from a place of acceptance and the dance-like massage is given in fluid, rhythmic movements, like waves moving over the body, from top to bottom and underneath as the arms take the weight of the body.
Different parts of the body can be massaged at the same time, using forearms and hands and warmed coconut oil, creating a sense of harmony and bliss.

It is now popular in Japan and Europe as well as Hawaii.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue and is especially beneficial for chronically tense areas.

Adhesions or bands of painful, rigid tissue are usually present where there is chronic muscle tension or injury, which can cause pain, inflammation and restricted movement. Deep pressure or friction is used to break down the adhesions, which can block circulation, to relieve pain and restore mobility. As the name suggests this is a deeper form of massage and tends to be more vigourous. Some soreness may be experienced during or after a deep tissue massage, however, if this does happen, it should go within a day or two. Deep Tissue Massage helps loosen muscle tissue, release toxins from the muscles and gets blood and oxygen circulating. Water helps eliminate toxins from the body so it is important to drink plenty of water after a treatment. Deep Tissue Massage usually focuses on a specific problem

Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone massage is a wonderfully warming treatment that uses heat to create very deep relaxation. Hot stone is a variation on classic massage therapy. Heated, smooth flat stones are placed on key points of the body between towels at the start of the therapy session so the client is cocooned in a heated towel wrap. More stones are then used to perform the massage along with oil. The stones are basalt (volcanic rock) which contains iron and this helps to retain the heat. The warmth of the stones calms the nervous system as well as improving the circulation and relaxing the muscles. It is a very comforting therapy, an exceptional stress buster!

Swedish Massage

Is the name for classic massage and is great for those wanting a deeply relaxing massage. Swedish massage is a soothing type of massage using oil and various strokes are performed to release tension and break up muscle ‘knots’. Swedish massage starts and finishes with relaxing effleurage strokes and then petrissage movements are performed which include kneading, picking up and wringing. This aids circulation and works deeper into the muscles. Percussion movements include hacking and cupping which is very stimulating, warming for the tissues and stimulating for the muscle fibres. Friction movements can be applied to small areas to work deeply into muscle tissue. This is a wonderful de-stressing therapy that promotes relaxation and rejuvenation.

Ear Candling

Ear candling (thermo-auricular therapy) is a gentle non-invasive therapy that gives revitalising heat to the ears and head which is both relieving and relaxing. The candles used for ear candling are a hollow tube made from organically grown flax impregnated with beeswax, honey extracts, sage, St John’s Wort, and chamomile. When lit the candles create a gentle heat and smoke is produced. A vacuum is created which helps dislodge impurities from the ear.

Only Biosun Ear Candles are used at The Sanctuary as they are made from pesticide-free, untreated woven cloth and are free from paraffin and other synthetic ingredients. They are the only ear candles that are a certified medical product class IIa according to medical device directive 93/42/EEC.

Testimonials

Sandra is a gifted reflexologist, which she combines with a beautiful manner and a professional attitude. It is with great pleasure that I recommend Sandra Swift.

Mario (Director, Global Tribe, Leeds)

I have visited Sandra for Indian head massage many times. The Sanctuary is a really welcoming space, and I always immediately feel relaxed by the lovely fragrance coming from the oil burner. Sandra is a very skilled practitioner, and her massage releases all the tensions I seem to hold in my neck and shoulders. The whole atmosphere is calm and serene and I always leave feeling wonderfully stress-free. I look forward very much to these sessions, and appreciate the fact that you don't have to book a regular slot, Sandra is more than happy to see me whenever I can fit it into my busy life, and as I write this review I have resolved to book another straight away!

At the time that I got in contact with Sandra I was having a few issues with stress, anxiety and panic attacks. Reflexology was something that various people had suggested that I try and I had long read of the reported benefits so decided to give it a go. This was nearly a year ago, and, with the exception of holidays, I have visited Sandra every single week since! I sooo look forward to my hour-long sessions. It's me-time and a chance to totally unwind. I can honestly say that I feel calmer, more relaxed and the panic attacks are no longer an issue. One other thing that I have noticed is that I seem to have much more energy and zest for life - less sluggish. It's like the sessions erase my weekly stress and give me a chance to recharge my batteries for another week ahead. The sessions are intensely relaxing - so much so that I have been known to drift off to sleep on occasions! Sandra is a very calming and positive individual who makes you feel safe and relaxed and she certainly knows what she is doing. I particularly like the fact that she loves her craft and is always seeking ways to improve and extend her own knowledge - this is then, of course, passed on to clients like me. If you are reading this and wondering how a visit to Sandra could help you then i would urge you to pick up the phone and at least give it a go. You won't regret it.
