Pilates is a body-conditioning method developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s. It works by targeting the deep postural muscles, building strength from inside out, rebalancing the body and bringing it back into correct alignment.

It aims to correct common postural faults and faulty movement patterns. We all have muscles which, through incorrect use, have either become short and tight, or long and weak. We aim to release those that are short and tight and strengthen those that are weak and overlong. By doing this and by working on strengthening the core postural muscles that stabilise the torso we see improvements to posture and movement patterns. We are working on what is often called ‘core stability’.

Pilates exercises as developed by Joseph Pilates are challenging , even for the most fit people. My approach breaks down classical Pilates into more accessible exercises so that the majority of people can have a go and get some benefit. Even by doing the basic level exercises on a regular basis most people will feel a difference in their bodies. The emphasis is on learning good movement skills step by step, which will lead to increased strength and flexibility, allowing everyone to progress at their own level.

It is a safe and effective form of exercise suitable for all ages and all levels of fitness. It actually changes the way you move both when exercising and in your everyday life. It’s slow, controlled approach means that it gives long-term results. It is used by a whole range of people, for example, from athletes looking to enhance their performance, to those who have back problems and have been advised by medical specialists to practice Pilates.

Body Control Pilates® is a registered Trade Mark used under licence
