What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is one of the most popular and accessible forms of natural medicine. It focuses on treating you the client as a whole i.e. holistically, and works in conjunction with other health treatments you may be receiving. For example, stress manifests in many ways from poor digestion to skin irritations to tiredness. By taking a holistic approach it is possible to link symptoms and find the root cause. Aromatherapy can be used to reduce anxiety, tackle specific medical conditions, relieve aches and pains, or just provide a moment of stillness in a busy day.

Aromatherapy involves externally applying essential oils that have been extracted from plants. An ‘essential oil’ is the quintessence of a plant, the most sublime extract of it which defines its aroma, purpose and chemistry. These oils are then diluted in a vegetable oil before being massaged into the body or absorbed via an inhalation, bath or other methods.

We have been using plants for centuries. The Ancient Egyptians were known for using aromatic substances in medicine, cosmetics and perfumes. The father of modern medicine, Hippocrates, defined the concept of wellness as mental, emotional and physical balance. Which is what we might now call ‘holistic wellbeing’.

So, it is in our DNA to use and benefit holistically from what grows naturally around us

What to expect in an Aromatherapy treatment?

An aromatherapy treatment at heka therapy will start with a comprehensive consultation to get a holistic picture of your health and wellbeing. Based on this, your therapist, Naomi will then make up a unique oil blend for your massage.

You will also discuss focus areas and your preference for pressure. It is important to note that an aromatherapy massage is not a deep tissue massage but can certainly improve muscle aches and pains.

After the massage Naomi may share lifestyle advice and home remedies with you to extend the treatment beyond the clinic room. Subsequent treatments will start with a brief consultation before your massage.

About Naomi

Naomi has a diploma in Aromatherapy & Essential Oil Science from Neal’s Yard Remedies; a qualification accredited by the International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists (IFPA). As one of the most comprehensive professional aromatherapy courses available, she has been taught by some of the world’s leading practitioners and has a thorough understanding of the safe use of oils for pregnant clients and people on medication.

Naomi supports clients with a range of issues such as anxiety, stress, muscle aches and pains, skin conditions as well as people who just need to wind down and enjoy some precious “me time”.

Prior to becoming an aromatherapist, Naomi had a successful career working in the PR industry but always knew she had another calling. A love of garden herbs was sparked during many memorable holidays with her Welsh grandparents and she has always had a keen interest in how the mind and body work. Then, after attending a baby massage course with her newly born son, she realised the power of positive touch and decided to take her life in a new, more meaningful and holistic direction.

The name 'Heka Therapy' was inspired by Naomi's love of the ancient world and the tradition of aromatherapy. Heka was the Egyptian god of magic and medicine and he was also associated with healing and the power of the written and spoken words. People believed that the 'Ka' was the life force or soul so the god Heka was often depicted holding the key of life, the Ankh. There are many parallels here with how we approach well being in the 21st century.

Naomi tries, where possible, to use Certified Organic materials.
