SERVICES

Welcome to Hanham Physiotherapy Sports Injury Clinic

Hanham Physiotherapy was set up in 2007 in preparation for leaving my post as Head Physiotherapist to Bristol Rugby club.

My practice specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of sports injuries but we also cover treatments of a wide range of other conditions.

As the practice name suggest I am based in the Hanham area of Bristol.

I can meet clients at my practice and can also arrange to visit clients in your home, sports club or workplace should there be convenient / suitable facilities available. As I travel extensively through my work I can only offer treatment by appointment only.

I have several highly qualified contacts with a wide range of specialists in their own field and can therefore arrange for clients to receive treatment ranging from sports massage to referral to appropriate specialist for assessment.

You can be but do not have to be referred to us by your doctor and fees can be paid with either cheque or cash. I am unable to accommodate health insurance treatment for some companies.

I have always had a keen interest in sport, having played most sports. My first love was football but I also developed a strong affinity to rugby which I played at school and university and cricket which I enjoyed through membership of Keynsham Cricket Club. I played football for both of my Schools, St Anne's Junior School and Sir Bernard Lovell in Oldland Common where my Sports Master was the now retired teacher but very much active rugby commentator for BBC Radio Bristol Andy Champion. Whilst playing for Deerswood Youth FC in the Hanham Minor and Avon Youth Leagues I played alongside none other than one Craig Short who went on to great things with Bristol and Rotherham Rugby clubs.

As a physiotherapy assistant working for United Bristol Healthcare Trust I became involved with various teams and also took up my first tutor role delivering Basic Treatment of Injury Courses for the Football Association.

I attended Brighton University to obtain my qualification as a Physiotherapist. My first full time employment was with North Bristol Healthcare Trust at Southmead, Frenchay and Clevedon Hospitals. As my experience grew and I qualified I found myself becoming involved with several sporting organisations including some very happy times providing match day cover for the Avon Youth League Under 16 representative team managed by Geoff Twentyman, ex Bristol Rovers player and now Sports Producer for BBC Radio Bristol.

I maintained other strong sporting interests working for Bath University medical team who provided physiotherapy and match day cover for the University Elite Rugby squad, Team Bath football team and also for Bristol Rovers youth teams. I also worked as a physiotherapist and provided match day cover for AXA Sun Life who played in the Gloucestershire County League.

Many will find the references to the blue side of football in Bristol slightly amusing as I am a self confessed fan of Bristol City and Bristol Rugby. Firstly I am a devotee of all sport and the company of those who partake in sport.

I spent nearly four years working with Bristol Rugby during which time I embarked on an MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine at Cardiff University. In my time at Bristol the rugby club achieved promotion to the premiership and then had two very successful seasons culminating in qualification for this years Heinkeken cup. I like to think that some of this success was built on the fact that we managed to have relatively low injury rates during this time. I left Bristol rugby Club in December 2007 to pursue a career in private practice, and also spend some more time with my wife Clair and baby daughter Lottie. I still have some involvement in rugby having worked recently with the Dorset and Wiltshire Under 20’s side.
