WELCOME
Samantha Handley - Dip Couns, Cert H
Clinical Hypnotherapist and Person Centred Counseller - Adult and Child Therapy

I have studied therapy for over six years, and have worked in areas as diverse as bereavement, alcohol abuse and counselling children in schools. I specialise in hypnotherapy, but also offer counselling sessions, using a wide variety of therapeutic techniques.

Above all I offer a caring, friendly setting for you to break free of what holds you back, and find your own path to your full potential - Grab control of your own life.

What is Hypnotherapy?
First, What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a state of relaxation, where your conscious mind can wander, and it actually happens to us several times a day. Have you ever been on a journey, maybe driving yourself or sat on a train, and suddenly you look up and realize that you have arrived? You have been in a hypnotic state. Your conscious mind has wandered off to daydream about a film or a past conversation, and your subconscious has come forward. But if something happened during the journey - like a car breaking unexpectedly in front of you or an announcement on the intercom, you would ‘snap back’ and act appropriately. This is because your subconscious is always alert and aware, and looking out for your wellbeing.

On its own hypnosis is simply a calm, tranquil feeling, but when used in therapy, it can produce powerful results.

The British Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis states:
"hypnosis usually involves the person experiencing a sense of deep relaxation with their attention narrowed down, and focused on appropriate suggestions made by the therapist."

Your subconscious cares for you, and will do whatever it perceives you need to keep you safe. But sometimes a past event gives the subconscious the wrong impression of what it is we need. It tries to protect us from future bad events by making us react to anything that reminds it of that first bad event. Suggestions made during hypnotherapy will help your subconscious understand what you truly need, and counteract the impressions left by that first damaging event.

In hypnotherapy, there is no controlling people’s minds, no sleep like state where you wake with no idea of what has happened to you with your mind changed. In a hypnotherapy session you are always in control and you can’t be made to do anything you don‘t want. Hypnosis could be seen, ultimately, as self-hypnosis, with a hypnotherapist merely helping to facilitate your experience - ‘to guide you through’. Hypnotherapy is not about being made to do things, in fact it's the opposite - it's about empowerment.

What is Different Between Counselling and Hypnotherapy?

During a counselling session, the client would be talking to the therapist from the point of view of their conscious mind. They would relate that which they know to be true and how they feel. In time, with a skilled therapist relaying back what they have heard and perceived from the client’s words, the client can gain some insight into what is happening for them and causing their issues.

I believe in counselling and have trained extensively in this field. Some people may prefer this method, and as I work in a person centred way in all my work, I offer counselling sessions in my practice.

But;

During a hypnotherapy session, the therapist would be able to, not only converse with the client’s subconscious, but also have the client themselves start a dialogue with their subconscious. This will lead the hypnotherapist to the issues that effect the client, even if they did not themselves know that they were troubling them.

With suggestions the hypnotherapist can insert ideas (discussed with the client before hand) straight into the subconscious, bypassing any barriers that prevent the client from doing so themselves And with analysis the hypnotherapist can delve deeper (and quicker) into the client’s issues and truly find what troubles them.

The Handley Approach
Each client is different, with different issues, so each session has to be tailor made.

In the consultation we will discuss what is troubling you and what outcome you are aiming for. When you choose to continue I will build a session, or group of sessions, to best suit you.

I work in a person-centred way, which means that you as the client are the expert and will know what is best, the therapist is there to guide you through your feelings and find the answer that is best for you.

Along with this I also use some CBT, counselling and visual therapies.

Having been through therapy myself, both counselling and hypnotherapy, I believe in its healing qualities, and have trained in a diverse selection of disciplines to offer a well rounded experience.

What can Hypnotherapy help with?

Hypnotherapy can help with a wide and diverse list of issues that we can all face in our day to day lives. From general anxiety to identified issues, if you are willing to commit to each session, then hypnotherapy is a very powerful tool at your disposal.

Maybe you don’t know what’s troubling you, or maybe there’s an issue that seems simple, but you can’t seem to fix it; because there is something you don’t recognise underneath. Hypnotherapy can help you identify what’s really going on, and guide you to a way to fix it.

For most issues we will require that you have visited your doctor first, so that any physical causes can be ruled out.

Issues we cover are;
    Stress,
    Anxiety,
    Bad habits,
    Smoking,
    Weight issues,
    Goal achievements,
    Social phobias,
    Exam stress,
    Life directioning,
    OCD,
    IBS,
    Nightmares,
    Bullying,
    Snoring,
    Fear of flying,
    Fear of driving,
    Fear of the dentist,
    Fear of animals,
    Fear of public speaking,
    Fear of spiders,
Fear of what other people think.
And many, many more.

The number of sessions required can vary for each issue and each person.
