Kelso Mobile Sports Massage: Injuries, treatment & rehabilitation

Mike Bell: Sports Massage Therapist (Level 5) & Corrective Exercise Specialist.

I would personally like to welcome you to my profile, and to the great benefits that Sports Massage can give you.
I am a mobile Sports Massage Therapist (Level 5), working in Kelso and the Scottish Borders.
I work with a wide range of clients with various conditions, including injuries, pain management, tight muscles, muscular imbalances, rehabilitation and many other areas.
I have worked in this field for the past 3-4 years. Prior to that I worked as a Corrective Exercise Specialist and Performance Enhancement Specialist.,
I work with various age groups across many disciplines and types of people, from sedentary people up to professional athletes. The benefits of sports massage to everyone at this time in history is very pertinent, due to people misusing their bodies in many ways.
What is needed is a shift in peoples’ mindset so that they realise that looking after their bodies has to rank high in their’ lives, so that they have more energy, function better, and lead more healthy and happy lives. The following is a description of what sports massage therapy is and how it compares with normal massage.
What distinguishes myself within the industry is I am also an NASM Personal Trainer, Corrective Exercise Specialist and Performance Enhancement Specialist, as well as being an NLP Trainer, Sports Hypnotherapist, and High Performance Sports Specialist.
Feel free to contact me on 07754 937341, so as to see if sports massage can help you.

Common Myths about Sports Massage

Since I have been doing Sports Massage I have been told the following by clients of mine who have received sports type or deep tissue massage in the past

….It needs to be painful to be effective….
….You should hurt for days afterwards…
….It’s only for sportspeople….

I would like to dispel the myths.

First, why is sports massage different to normal ‘Swedish’ type massage?
Well most importantly the Sports or Remedial therapist should be additionally trained & insured. For Information on the levels of training you can look at Membership & insurance bodies such as the Sports Massage Association (SMA), Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT), Complementary Therapists association (CThA). There are of course others.

So what is the difference in training? Massage therapists in general, should have good general knowledge about anatomy, what muscles they are massaging, how to massage, what not to massage etc. Sports massage therapists take that to a deeper level of knowledge with different & more effective techniques, greater knowledge of anatomy, acute & chronic treatment of sports injuries & management, as well as rehabilitation & exercise. They should be able to manage athlete’s pre & post event and some will be able to do other management techniques such as strapping, taping & ultrasound. All should have a current first aid certificate & if possible a sports or pitch side first aid certificate. All therapists should maintain a programme of continuous professional development by keeping up to date with new ideas & gaining additional training.

So what if you are not an athlete or even partake in any sport? This is the reason why ‘remedial’ is probably a better term to use than sports massage. We all have aches & pains & minor injuries from time to time. Remedial work effectively just means to treat for a more specific reason. For example you may feel you need a back massage to ease general tension from sitting at a computer all day long. So your Remedial therapist would use a targeted approach with a combination of Remedial (i.e. more specific, advanced, deeper,) techniques alongside general ‘Swedish’ type massage. In other word there is a cross over & therefore all massages are tailored to suit the individual Client.

Will it hurt? Proper techniques should not mean pain. Your therapist should be able to ‘go deeper’ without necessarily hurting. Yes if there are painful knots it might be sore, but we all have different pain thresholds & a good massage therapist will only work within the comfort levels of their client. You may feel a bit sore over the next 24 hours if they have had to work deeply into one area, but you should not be in pain & you should be feeling better after 48hours.

Why else should I have a massage? One of the most valuable reasons to having regular Remedial massage is for general maintenance & to prevent injury. The example above of the computer/desk worker with the sore back would benefit greatly from having regular massage sessions to prevent tensions developing and/or treat them at early stages before those tensions develop into painful regions of the body & causing muscle imbalances.
All our individual muscles are connected in one way or another with other parts of the body through connective tissue and a client who presents with back pain may actually have a leg problem that needs addressing first or the back problem will just keep occurring.
Additionally your therapist should be able to give you good homecare advice incorporating self treatment such as ice or heat, exercise & stretching techniques or on modifying that which may be causing the problem.
Finally, massage does more than free up localised knots. It improves muscle tone & circulation, removes toxins & reduces stress

Feel better; look after your body & it will look after you.
