Welcome to First Fruits Nutrition

Nutrition is the science of foods, their composition and the way in which they are broken down and used by the body to improve and maintain health. There are some basic guidelines about the needs of a body, but these need to be tweaked for the individual, probably many times during life, as needs change with age and circumstance. It is not necessary to feel tired and run down all the time, though many people have become so accustomed to it that they have forgotten what it is like to have energy, and often feel tired just watching someone else who has energy. It may only take a few small changes in the diet to improve overall health. Just having one vitamin or mineral in short supply can mean that the whole body is out of kilter, and means that everything will have to work harder.

What is a healthy diet?

It is important to eat a healthy balanced diet, but what does that mean?

A balanced diet contains all the different food groups and provides all the essential vitamins and minerals that the body needs. There should be proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, fibre and water. When all these things are present in the diet in the right proportions, your body will function well and will have a better chance of fighting off illness and diseases.

When you eat a balanced diet you are giving your body the tools it needs to maintain itself, defend against any threat to the immune system, repair and replace any damaged cells and restore itself to its full potential.

Diets don’t work

Most people think of a diet as a short term eating programme that you go on to lose weight, this is a mistake though, as whatever we eat is our diet.

It is pointless to follow a plan to lose weight only to return to old bad habits, as the weight that was lost will soon be regained plus some. This happens because the metabolism is changed i.e. the rate at which energy is used.

Many weight loss diets exclude important groups of food and this can lead to deficiencies of some vitamins and minerals, in turn this can cause illness and long term health problems if it is not dealt with properly.

It does not take very long for the effect of dietary changes to become apparent, however, the changes that are made must be thought of as lifestyle changes, they are not ‘a quick fix’.
You are fearfully and wonderfully made after all.
