SERVICES

Welcome to Equipoise Shiatsu

Equipoise Shiatsu is a complementary therapy available for people and/or horses and operates from Colchester, Essex. Equipoise Shiatsu is run by Rose Brown, who trained and qualified with the British School of Shiatsu-Do and is registered as an approved practitioner with The Shiatsu Society. Rose has also been independently assessed by the Equine Shiatsu Assciation (tESA) and is an approved equine practitioner.

Shiatsu comes from the Far East and literally means 'finger pressure' in Japanese. It is often described as originating from acupuncture, a Chinese therapy in existence for 10,000 years – stone needles have been found at Neolithic sites dating from 8,000 BC.

Shiatsu uses a combination of Five Element, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Zen theories. The practitioner accesses Qi (Prana in Ayurvedic medicine) within the bodies’ meridians by using touch in the form of massage, stretching, physiotherapy techniques and pressure.

Shiatsu may be beneficial for many ‘disharmonies’ such as:

  • Recurrent aches, pains and stiffness

  • Breathing difficulties / asthma

  • Recovery from operations

  • Stress related problems

  • Improving your posture

  • Headaches / migraines

  • Menstrual problems

  • General well-being

  • Sports injuries

About Me

My student days were always science orientated and resulted in a Chemistry Degree from the University of London. I used this knowledge and entered the manufacturing world of printed circuit boards and became Technical Manager at GEC Marconi Research.

Following an early mid-life crisis (aged 35) I left Marconi and pursued a wide variety of options, including market research, working for my local Wildlife Trust and finally into the world of horse insurance. This fitted more closely with my lifelong love of horses.

I have owned horses for the past 25 years and currently own three; a 14 year old homebred ID x TB who loves hunting with the local bloodhounds; an 11 year old ISH for all types of riding club activities and affilliated dressage; and the most recent addition is a yearling of unknown Dutch origin.

In 2001 I discovered someone practicing shiatsu on horses and felt that I needed to know more about it, so I started a course at the British School of Shiatsu-Do in Colchester and became hooked – I now have a very hard earned diploma, following over 3 years of studies, 500 hours of tuition and approximately 250 supervised practice treatments. I run my own business based at home in Boxted, Colchester. I combine my love of horses and shiatsu by helping riders gain better balance and understanding of their horses.

Over the past year I have actively been promoting shiatsu in the North Essex and Suffolk area with a group of shiatsu practitioners called SANESA (Suffolk and North Essex Shiatsu Association). We run practitioner workshops and occassionally have trade-stands at a number of shows and exhibitions.
