“People are not disturbed by things but the views they take of them.” (Epictetus c.93 AD). CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) wasnt around in the days of Epictetus, but he was spot on with his philosophy that what people think affects how they feel emotionally and physically. How a person thinks also affects how they behave and alters what they do in life. The philosophical thinking of Epictetus ultimately became the fundamental principle of the most recognised and successful therapeutic approach - CBT. Discover how changing the way you think can greatly improve your life and perhaps the lives of those close to you - contact me

ONE to ONE THERAPY: "I specialise in teaching CBT techniques to help you to solve your problems. My preference of working in a CBT way has grown over my years of training because of the proven techniques which help people to become more aware of how they reason and the kinds of automatic thoughts that spring to mind - automatic thoughts are often self defeating. The way in which a person processes information differs depending on their clinical symptoms. For example those who experience anxiety disorders, such as panic and phobias, often have increased perception of danger and threat alongside a belief in their own lack of ability to cope with that danger and threat.
I offer practical advice and tools for overcoming common emotional problems.
I hold the view that a person can change and develop by thinking things through and by trying out new ideas and strategies.
We can discuss and address your past life events if we think doing so could help you to understand and change how you think and act now.
As your therapist I'll help you to see that some of the strategies you're using to cope with your emotional problems are actually maintaining those problems.
I will adopt a collaborative stance with you, encouraging you to work on changing how you feel, by putting into practice what you have learned."

"Allow yourself the opportunity of thinking differently, perhaps less negatively - book an assessment session with me today. An assessment session is an initial consultation for which there is a fee. As well as helping to determine what you want from therapy, this initial session can also allow you the opportunity to ask me questions and to decide whether you would like to continue with therapy. A typical course of CBT therapy with or without the integration of EMDR may be from 10 weeks to 6 months and each session lasts for one hour. I offer blocks of sessions, usually with the expectation that my client will enter into agreement to do homework in between sessions. If you are interested in arranging some sessions please contact me."

EMDR: EMDR is a non hypnotic form of psychotherapy that was developed to resolve symptoms resulting from disturbing and unresolved life experiences. Working directly with memory networks EMDR enhances the information processing mode that we all have but cant access. It is thought to immitate the psychological state that we enter into when in Rapid Eye Movement (REM) Sleep. Studies have shown that when our minds are in REM sleep we are able to make new associations between things very rapidly. To arrange EMDR sessions, please contact me.

INTEGRATIVE PSYCHOTHERAPIES: My early counselling career was spent in general counselling practice and this generalist background, training, knowledge and experience allows me to work within an integrative framework incorporating elements of other theoretical approaches eg. Person centred therapy, transactional analysis, psychodynamic approaches and mindfulness techniques to encourage your growth, your healing and your change.

GROUP THERAPY: I facilitate a monthly therapy group known as 'The Group' The success of therapy within ‘The Group’ is that people are free to care about each other.
Being a member of this therapy group can be helpful for those who have previously experienced therapy, but this is not a rule. A mixed group can help each other by listening to a disturbing problem which is being presently experienced by another group member and perhaps relating their similar difficulties which have already been worked through.
Under the direction of the group therapist Elizabeth Welch members of the group will be encouraged to give support to each other enabling members to resolve difficulties, learn different behaviours and develop new ways of relating to people.
As the group progresses you will be able to speak more freely in psychological safety and express those feelings which have felt difficult to express. You will be encouraged to ask for the support you need as well as to tell people what you expect of them.
You will be the one who will determine how much you will disclose in the group, you will not be forced to tell your innermost thoughts.
The group usually consists of approximately 6 individuals and is held monthly between 6-8pm. To arrange an interview or for more information, please contact me.

CRITICAL INCIDENT STRESS DEBRIEFING GROUPS: involve proactive interventions known as 'psychological first aid'. The aim of this confidential service/treatment approach is to promote support and encourage processing of traumatic experiences in a group setting in order to accelerate recovery before harmful stress reactions have had chance to affect people with PTSD and their families. National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) advise that post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop following a stressful event or situation..." "About 25-30% of people who have experienced a traumatic event go on to develop PTSD." (NICE 2008). Contact me for assistance with the following:

• Critical incident support
• Bereavement counselling
• Stress management
• Trauma responder

SUPERVISION: There is a general obligation for all counsellors, psychotherapists, supervisors and trainers to receive supervision/consultative support independently of any managerial relationships (BACP 2010). I am a qualified and experienced supervisor of counsellors and to this end provide both qualified and trainee counsellors with the protection of quality supervision which adheres to the BACP ethical codes for supervisors to ensure safety of both supervisee/practitioner and client.
As a supervisor I work in a supportive and developmental way and recognise my responsibility to protect clients from poor practice and ensure the maintenance and enhancement of good practice by supervisee/practitioners to acquire the attitudes, skills and knowledge required by their role. I aim to maintain confidentiality unless there are risks of harm to supervisee/practitioner or others. I will discuss my concerns beforehand with the supervisee/practitioner and seek further professional advice.
