About Me

I have always had a passion for helping people to feel better about themselves and knew at an early age that this was the work I wanted to do. Over the years I have followed different paths but all with the same aim and end result of helping people to feel better in their lives. I have worked within the spa industry, hands on and hands off, within management and consultancy. I have worked in HR for many years prompted by a five year postgraduate training in psychotherapy. After many years of wanting to improve my own health related issues of acne, recurrent tonsillitis and low energy levels, and doing lots of research and seeing many alternative practitioners, I entered a three year training in naturopathy and nutrition.

My specific areas of interest are the issues of stress and adrenal fatigue, depression and anxiety. I find the combination of nutrition, naturopathy and psychotherapy can work wonders in improving all health related issues and they encompass the spiritual, physical, mental and emotional aspects of the individual.

My training
  • I am a member of the British Association of Nutritional Therapy (BANT), The Complementary and Natural Health Council (CNHC) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). I am bound by their code of ethics and practice
  • Post graduate diploma in Transpersonal Psychotherapy from The College of Counselling and Psychotherapy Education
  • Diploma in Nutritional Therapy from The College of Natural Medicine
  • Diploma in Naturopathy from the College of Natural Medicine
  • Certificate from the National Centre for Eating Disorders

Counselling & Psychotherapy

The words counselling and psychotherapy are often used interchangeably. Counselling tends to be shorter term work and psychotherapy tends to cover issues of a deeper nature with therapy usually lasting longer.

Psychotherapy/counselling is a term used to describe a range of talking therapies to help overcome problems such as relationship difficulties, emotional issues and many others. The process will involve exploring in depth your feelings, thoughts and beliefs in a very safe, non judgmental environment. Through this process you will be able to better understand how your childhood and life to date has shaped how you are and how you respond in the present, bringing things that have been unconscious into the conscious. This can be very empowering, as once we are conscious of what we do and why we do it, we realise we have a choice as to whether we want to change what doesn’t work for us anymore. The therapeutic relationship created provides you with the support and encouragement to make these changes at a pace that is right for you.

I am trained in Transpersonal Psychotherapy which is amongst many therapies that fall under the category of Humanistic. Simply put, it allows for the exploration of the spiritual aspect of the person which is not connected in any way to any religious beliefs that may or may not be held. My training was integrative and so covers working in many ways and fundamentally adapts to the needs of the individual in front of me.

How I work?

I normally suggest an initial twenty minute telephone conversation for you to establish if you would like to work with me and that I am able to help you. I have a good network of colleagues that specialise in different areas that I may be able to refer you to if we both feel that it would be more helpful.

Once you are decided that you want to work with me we arrange an hour session on a weekly basis (the same time and day). The length of time we work together will be totally up to you as there is no contract committing you. Payment is made at the end of each session. I have had experience of working with many issues over the last fifteen years and additional training in the areas of eating disorders and relationships.

Due to my training in naturopathy and nutrition, I may suggest further investigation along this route if I believe your issues could be health related as this is not at all uncommon.

Naturopathic Nutritional Therapy

Naturopathic Nutritional Therapy stresses the use of whole and organic foods as medicine. It follows the principles of naturopathy in that it sees each person as an individual and seeks to find the root cause of diseases and disorders rather than just treating symptoms. The body has the capacity to heal itself if given the right conditions. Harmony can be fostered with proper nutrition, water, rest, sunshine and fasting.

In the second century BC, the Yellow Emporer, in the Classic of Internal Medicine, said ‘’A doctor who treats a disease after it has happened is a mediocre doctor…a doctor who treats a disease before it happens is a superior doctor’’. Chinese physicians were actually paid to keep their patients healthy and were either not paid or dismissed if the patient became ill. This is truly what you would call a ‘health system’ rather than the ‘ill health’ system we currently are operating under.

Based on the above, part of the role of the naturopathic nutritional therapist is empowering the client to take responsibility for his or her own health. In the same way that we service our cars each year we should be always looking at servicing our minds and bodies as prevention is always better than cure.

How can I help you?

Firstly I am more interested in the person that has the disease or disorder than I am the disease or disorder itself. If we can get every system of the body functioning as it should then the body will do its own healing –that is nature’s specialty!
I will begin by asking you to fill in a food diary to give me an idea of the kinds of food you eat and what you drink on a regular basis. I will also ask you to fill in an in depth health questionnaire. I ask you to send these back to me before our session so I can have time to look through them and research any medications or conditions you may have.

During our initial session which will last approximately an hour and a half we will go into more depth and create a time line of your health from birth to the present. Once this is completed I will create a programme for you which may involve changes to your diet, the use of supplements and lifestyle changes. These will be e-mailed/posted to you soon after your consultation. We may require laboratory testing, some of which may be done through your G.P. or some privately. I will always discuss the options and costs with you prior to you making a decision on this.

I will generally recommend that we see each other again every 4-6 weeks for an hour (depending what we are working on) to establish progress. I am also contactable between sessions for any questions or concerns.

Due to my training in counselling and psychotherapy, I may suggest further investigation along this route if I believe your issues could be emotionally and mentally related as this is not at all uncommon.
