History of Reflexology

Reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India and China. But it was not until 1913 that Dr William Fitzgerald, an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist, introduced reflexology to the western world as “zone therapy”. He showed that applying pressure to a specific part of the body could have an anaesthetising effect on a related area.

Building on his findings, Fitzgerald divided the body into ten equal and vertical zones, ending in the fingers and toes. He concluded that pressure on one part of a zone could affect everything else within that zone.

In the 1930s and 1940s Eunice Ingham, a nurse and physiotherapist, further developed and refined zone therapy into what is now known as Reflexology. She observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot mirrored congestion or tension in a corresponding part of the body. For example, treating the big toes produces a related effect in the head, and treating the whole foot can have a relaxing and healing effect on the whole body.

Benefits of Reflexology

Reflexology has many beneficial and lasting effects. Some treatments are gentle in nature, aiming to restore systems for better function while others are more specific, addressing the client's particular conditions. It is a healing process that can be safely used when it is not convenient to treat other body parts. As a non-intrusive technique, it heals indirectly. Reflexology can be a relaxing therapy that works on many levels, soothing, calming, balancing and boosting the entire body.

The client's case history leads to the treatment protocol so that the technique is tailored to the needs of the client.

Reflexology can help with many different conditions. As Reflexology is an energy therapy the uses are endless. Below are just a few.

What to Expect

Reflexology sessions are for people of all ages, from the newborn to the elderly.

The Frequency
How many sessions will vary according to your needs and reaction to treatment. Each treatment will normally take 45-60 minutes. Treatment visits will also vary: some weekly, monthly, or bi monthly, although once a week is generally advised.

The Session
The actual treatment is preceded by a consultation about your health and lifestyle. Then you are asked to remove your shoes and socks and sit comfortably on a massage table. Apart from your shoes and socks you remain fully clothed. The reflexologist will then access the feet before commencing treatment.

After Treatment
Most often people feel calm and relaxed after a reflexology treatment. Sometimes people feel anxious or tearful, but this is usually only temporary - and often considered as part of the healing process.

After Treatment

In order to gain the most benefit from your treatment I advise that as part of your aftercare routine you:

  • Increase your intake of water as this will assist in flushing out the toxins within your body.
  • Please avoid alcohol, caffeine, tobacco or other stimulants for 24 hours following treatment as it may reduce the effect of your treatment.
  • Please avoid heavy or spicy food following treatment; instead try a light meal with plenty of fresh vegetables.
  • Rest as much as possible following your treatment as this will assist the healing process. You may experience tiredness or fatigue, headache, heightened emotional state or flu-like symptoms following your treatment. This will only be short-lived and will be replaced by feelings of wellness and vitality. This means the immune system is working.

Symptoms and Questions
Reflexology is an individual and personal treatment and therefore people can experience different feelings and symptoms. If you have any concerns following your treatment do not hesitate to contact me.

Our Services

Reflexology

An ancient Eastern healing tradition based on the principle that all parts of our body are connected by energy pathways which end in the hands, feet and head.

A reflexology treatment uses pressure massage on specific areas of the feet to promote healing in the corresponding organs, glands and structures.

This releases areas of tension and helps energy flow more freely throughout your body.

Reflexology In The Workplace

Do The Thing Therapies is pleased to offer Reflexology to businesses in the London area. An individual session takes 45 minutes or 20 minutes for an express treatment.

I can visit you and your staff at work and provide treatments either during a lunch period or another preferred time of the day.

Stress and all of its related illnesses - whether its origination is at work or home are a major cause of sickness absence and poor performance which is a real cost your company would probably rather avoid.

More and more companies are reaping the benefits of allowing their employees to receive reflexology treatments at their places of work.

Infertility and Reflexology

Anxiety and frustration can create the very physical problems that prevent conception. Reflexology encourages a deep relaxation, which alleviates stress and tension so that conception may take place.

Reflexology is not a cure for infertility but where difficulty conceiving is attributed to unexplained infertility it can provide a hope.

Gentle pressure to reflex points balances the hormonal system and stimulates the reproductive organs. Both women and men can benefit from treatments for individual reasons, such as regulation of menstruation and stimulation of sperm production.

It is often helpful to treat both partners to make sure that we are achieving the optimum environment for conception to take place.

Maternity Reflexology

In the womb, babies take in both nourishment and emotional responses from the mother via the umbilical cord. Therefore treating the mother indirectly also aids the baby. Although both have a separate nervous and blood circulatory system, the mother and her developing baby communicate through the nervous and hormonal links. This is especially the case on an emotional level so that if mother is distressed, her stress hormones cross the placenta. Prolonged stress is known to affect the immune system. In babies exposed to maternal distress and a complicated birth there seems to be a predisposition to recurrent infections and allergies, especially when there is a family history of allergy.

Pregnancy is a time of phenomenal transformation where mother will experience a range of emotional, physical, chemical and hormonal changes. The expectant mother’s body is constantly adapting to accommodate the growing baby, deliver the baby and then restore itself. The treatment will be modified according to each stage of pregnancy.

Baby Reflexology

Reflexology can help babies too. It can help improve a baby’s sleep pattern, treat constipation, boost baby’s immune system, soothe colic pain and teething trouble. Reflexology has been known to help the bonding process between mother and baby. Reflexology can be used for relaxation when performed on your newborn.

Pamper Parties

Why not get together with a group of friends and organise a Pamper Party? A new concept that enables you and your friends to sample Reflexology.

Whether it's a hen night, a baby shower, a prenatal or postnatal group, a birthday or just an excuse to get together and pamper yourselves, these parties are always great fun and a lovely way to all get together and have a relaxing treatment.

Each person gets a 20 minute taster session at a cost of just £15 per person.

This is a great way for everyone to have a taster treatment while everyone else chats, eats and drinks.
