What is Hypnotherapy?

Perhaps it’s worth explaining the definition of hypnosis. Hypnosis, or the hypnoidal state as it is more properly known, is merely a state of altered consciousness and we enter it nearly all the time. One of the simplest examples to offer is daydreaming, which we’ve all done, where we suddenly blink or shake our head as we realise we were “miles away” but have now come back to reality.

Clearly then there are different areas of consciousness. There’s the busy active part taking in what’s happening around us and responding to it but there’s also the subconscious part, working away in the background, keeping everything else on track while the conscious part is preoccupied.

It’s the subconscious that holds all the information about who we are, what we are, what we’ve experienced as individuals and the motivations that make us do what we do during our life. If any of them is not as we would wish then it’s the subconscious we need to talk to, not the conscious area. What we need to do is to communicate directly with the subconscious where all our beliefs and motivations reside if we want to bring about change.

What we do in hypnosis is to bypass the conscious by quietening it down so that it doesn’t get in the way of us communicating with the subconscious. So hypnosis deliberately alters our state of consciousness so that we can do this.

Why should I choose Hypnotherapy?

Because the patient is not actually asleep during a hypnotherapy session they are fully aware of what is happening and what is being said. Therefore, if a suggestion is made which is against their own ethics or morals they will not take it on board. Nobody can be made to do anything under hypnosis that they would not ordinarily consent to and that can be very reassuring for the first time patient.

Just as the depth of sleep can vary for individuals so too can the depth of trance that they experience. Even if only a light trance state is reached, post-hypnotic suggestions can still be effective, as they will have been delivered at a level below full consciousness. If deeper trance states are felt to be more appropriate then repeating the inductions over a period of time can help to achieve this.

All patients will wake up at the end of a hypnotic trance session. Some patients worry about staying in a “zombie” state but by following an awakening procedure a therapist or the patient themselves can leave trance successfully. Similarly, because the patient is fully aware of what is happening they can leave trance quickly and respond to something like a fire alarm or similar event.

Just as it helps to remember things by repeating them to ourselves, it helps post-hypnotic suggestions to be more effective if they are repeated during further trance sessions. Here, the patient can be taught to practise self-hypnosis and reinforce the messages for themselves in self-induced hypnoidal states.

What can Hypnotherapy help with?

    WEIGHT CONTROL
I address the issues that create the eating problem which has lead to excess weight – not your diet.

    SMOKING CESSATION
One therapeutic session can lead to a permanent cessation of the urge to smoke.

    STRESS MANAGEMENT
You are given the ability to create your own relaxed state plus a way to deal with any sudden anxieties.

    PHOBIA REDUCTION
Fear of heights, flying, animals, reptiles and insects or any other “irrational” fears can be reduced.

    PAIN MANAGEMENT
Chronic pain can be reduced and managed, if not permanently eliminated.

    PERFORMANCE ANXIETY
Confidence to deliver speeches, take part in sporting activities or make a presentation is improved..
