Welcome to
The Holistic Approach

Human Treatments

The Holistic Approach to health differs from the conventional medical approach in that it takes into account the whole patient and his or her environment, rather than just focusing on the symptom or the part of the body that has the problem. Holistic medicine is the concept of creating balance between mind, body and soul.

As part of the big picture we will look at nutrition, emotions, previous illnesses and treatment as key factors that can influence your health. Our home environment, pollution, stress, the weather, relationships and the chemicals in food and water, are also major causes of dis-ease.

Symptoms are great indicators that our bodies are out of balance they highlight our need to make some adjustments if we are to regain our health and vitality. If we ignore or just suppress the messages (symptoms) then we can expect bigger problems to arise. Holistic therapy aims to restore the body and its immune system to a state of balance, allowing the body's natural healing mechanism to function effectively. Holistic therapies complement conventional medicine and help to relieve side effects, boost the immune system and accelerate the healing process.

Human Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the therapeutic inhalation and topical application of essential oils extracted from medicinal plants. These amazing plant remedies can effectively relax, balance, rejuvenate, restore and enhance body, mind and spirit. Aromatherapy stimulates the immune system, strengthens resistance to disease and helps to combat infections. It is especially helpful for women's problems such as PMS and menopausal distress. It aids digestion easing cramps, bloating and the symptoms of IBS. Aromatherapy optimizes the functioning of the respiratory system - helping with coughs, tonsillitis, and sinusitis. It eases muscular aches and pains and promotes muscle relaxation and tone. Aromatherapy can lower blood pressure, reduce stress levels and combat insomnia and other stress related disorders. It can alleviate tension headaches and helps to deal with different emotions, such as anxiety, mild depression, grief, etc.

Massage

Massage is one of the most effective healing arts. Gentle massage affects the nervous system through nerve endings in the skin, stimulating the release of endorphins, the body's natural 'feel good' chemicals, to help induce relaxation and a sense of well-being, to relieve pain and reduce levels of stress chemicals. It helps reverse the damaging effects of stress by slowing heart rate, respiration and metabolism and lowering raised blood pressure.

Stronger massage stimulates blood circulation to improve the supply of oxygen and nutrients to body tissues and helps the lymphatic system to flush away waste products. It eases tense, knotted muscles and stiff joints, improving mobility and flexibility. Its many benefits include deep relaxation, improved circulation and postural awareness.

The Holistic Approach offers:

  • Aromatherapy massage

  • Thai Massage

  • Swedish Massage

  • Transforming Touch Massage

Each form of massage is unique; they all involve the amazing healing power of touch. You will want to use these differences to suit your specific needs at different times.

Aromatherapy massage is a gentle treatment using plant oils together with massage, a powerful, soothing way to support the body on many levels, wonderful for reducing the negative effects of stress.

Thai massage is a combination of yoga, massage and acupressure techniques. It is performed on floor mats with the patient fully clothed. The recipient will experience a deep sense of calm, improved flexibility followed by renewed energy and vitality.

Swedish massage can be performed as a whole body treatment or to target specific areas of tension, it is an invigorating and rejuvenating treatment ideally suited to more physical ailments.

Transforming Touch massage Works on body mind and spirit. This beautiful treatment takes relaxation to a new level. Transforming touch is ideal for everyone, it is gentle yet deep, soothing yet re charging.

Reiki Healing

Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese word meaning “universal life energy” Reiki is a hands on healing art where energy is channeled through the hands of the therapist directly to the client. Reiki activates the body’s natural ability to heal itself, releasing blocked energies, clearing the body of toxins and working to create a state of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual balance and harmony.

Reiki is effective for:

  • Managing stress and tension

  • Support during times of crises, depression, Illness & bereavement

  • Speeding recovery after surgery and injury

  • Supporting conventional medicine & minimising side effects

  • Replenishing and supporting carers

  • Personal growth and self-confidence

  • Promoting harmony within relationships

  • Perception of inner clarity, wisdom, and intuition

Reflexology

Reflexology involves the gentle manipulation of the feet or hands to stimulate the body’s own healing process.

You do not have to be unwell to enjoy Reflexology. It is a beneficial treatment that can be used on any person, old or young, male or female. It is wonderfully effective during pregnancy and for the health of children and babies.

Each pressure and reflex point is directly linked to the relative parts and organs of the body. When applying pressure to specific points, blockages and toxins are released improving the function of the major body systems, enhancing overall health and well-being.

Reflexology helps maintain good health and can help many conditions, some are listed below.

  • Constipation

  • Fertility

  • Pregnancy

  • Digestive problems

  • Menopausal symptoms

  • Stress

  • Insomnia

  • Menstrual

  • Migraine

As well as combating stress, reflexology has been found to have psychological benefits such as improving self confidence and helping to increase your ability to focus and concentrate.

Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine is the use of leaves, flowers, berries and the roots of medicinal plants to prevent, relieve and treat illness. Balancing hormone levels, lifting depression and improving the workings of the body systems are included amongst the many benefits of herbal remedies.

Herbal medicine is the oldest known form of healthcare to mankind. Herbs have been used by all cultures throughout history; plant medications operate in basically the same manner as their pharmaceutical counterparts, which is via their chemical makeup. It is herbal medicines wholistic nature that allows them to gently yet positively effect the body without the negative side effects commonly found with pharmaceutical preparations.

Herbal medicine has a great deal to offer when used to facilitate healing in chronic, ongoing problems. It can also be used effectively to treat numerous ailments, such as digestive disorders, the common cold, insomnia, headaches, and a host of other problems traditionally treated by nonprescription, over-the-counter medications. Increasingly, many aspects of herbal medicine have been supported by rigorous scientific research.

Kinesiology

The definition of kinesiology is the science of movement. Its theories are based on Chinese medicine, testing the flow of energy in the acupuncture meridians by isolating certain muscle groups. Kinesiology is a holistic system that allows the body to communicate accurately its physical and emotional imbalances.

Kinesiology uses muscle response to ’ask the body’ what help it needs to address a particular issue. Kinesiology has a reputation for helping with problems that have not been resolved through other means because it addresses the issue holistically. For example, an apparent physical symptom such as eczema, IBS, PMS, asthma, pain etc, may be the result of an underlying emotional, physical, chemical or electro-magnetic imbalance. Kinesiology identifies the true issues related to your symptom and the most appropriate approach to healing, which may involve diet, nutritional or herbal supplements, healing, massage, energy balancing or aromatherapy.

Kinesiology analysis allows us to identify the most effective natural remedies to bring the body back into a state of balance and harmony.

Animal Treatments

Holistic therapies are based on ancient concepts, a reminder of life's unity, wholeness and complete balance. The holistic perspective looks beyond the immediate symptom to the deeper cause with emphasis on prevention, maintenance and longevity.

Holistic medicine does not intend to replace the traditional approach, it is a complementary and integral part of total health, a necessity for a truly comprehensive health program resulting in optimum well-being of body, mind and spirit.

Holistic healthcare allows you more involvement in your animal’s welfare; it recognizes that you know your animals better than most. Your animals will intuitively guide their treatments, they will ask you for their remedies, they will offer you parts of their body for massage and they will reward you for your kindness time and time again.

Animal Aromatherapy

Animal Aromatherapy is our opportunity to give nature’s abundant array of plant medicine back to our domesticated animals. In the wild the animal kingdom has ad-lib access to thousands of different plant species. They use these plants for there nutritional and therapeutic value’s to promote healing, prevent parasitic burdens, to ease gastrointestinal discomfort, combat toxicity, boost immunity and overall well being. Animals efficiently keep themselves well with an intuitive sense of timing, self selection and self medication.

Essential oils are concentrated, volatile extracts from the fruits, roots, seeds, gums and herbs of aromatic plants and trees. They are very complex, containing hundreds of different chemical constituents. It is these properties that help to restore balance and promote physical, psychological and emotional wellbeing.

Methods of application vary depending on the specific problem. You will be guided through this during the consultation. Essential oils are highly volatile. Their chemical constituents are easily absorbed via the bloodstream, olfactory system or epidermis. Inhalation can be every bit as effective as taking a remedy orally or applying topically. Results and reactions are often powerful on a physical and emotional level.

As an aromatics practitioner. I am able to understand your animal’s body language and reactions. This combined with my knowledge of plant medicine and its safe preparation is the key to this natural, non-invasive form of medicine. To achieve successful, long term results, my role is to help you to incorporate the many benefits of plant medicine into your animal’s routine.

Animal Kinesiology

Kinesiology is the science of movement. Its theories are based on Chinese medicine, testing the flow of energy in the acupuncture meridians by isolating certain muscle groups allowing me to assess the functioning of all the major body systems. It is a holistic system that permits the body to communicate accurately its physical, emotional and nutritional imbalances.

Kinesiology further allows me to find the most effective and compatible plant medicines, to bring into balance the body systems with weak responses. Kinesiology is a non-invasive tool that allows me to identify problems in people and animals and can be performed using a hair sample. Due to the nature of this test it I can analyse these samples without the patient being present.

Animal Healing

Animal healing is a gentle, non invasive therapy. Animals truly love healing and will often move their body around to where they most need or want the energy; they trust the process completely and relax deeply into it. Often their body language conveys important messages, some will stretch out as they release physical problems, others with more emotional issues will curl up into the foetal position as they deal with past traumas. Often there is immediate improvement.

Older animals benefit from a boost of healing energy, often releasing aches and pains, helping them to maintain a more mobile, healthier state of well being. For animals that are recovering from illness or operations, gentle healing aids a speedy recovery. There are times when our animal's body is too old or badly damaged to repair, in these cases, healing plays a special role for the terminally ill pet. Healing brings relief from pain, a letting go of fear, allowing a peaceful passing. Healing also gives great strength to the owners, at this sad time of loss.

Horse and Rider Wellness

To enjoy our animals fully we must ensure we look after our own health and well-being. Many owners myself included have devoted much of our energy to our beloved four legged friends often to the detriment of our own health. Having learnt the hard way I now understand that it is as much a gift to our animals as it is to ourselves to ensure we are mentally and physically balanced, that we enjoy health, harmony and vitality. Holistic therapies are wonderful for restoring energy and calm, for releasing muscular aches and pains, for dispelling fears and anxiety, for boosting confidence and reducing stress, the list is endless.

Horse and rider consultations bring about big shifts on the physical and emotional level. Whether you are a happy hacker or regular competitor you will enjoy the positive effects natural therapies can bring. Private sessions are available or you can organise a Natural Health Clinic at your yard. We will be on hand to treat all four legged and two legged patients using a wide variety of therapies, helping you all to achieve and maintain optimum well-being.

Magnetic & Far Infrared Therapy

I have been incorporating these natural non-invasive technologies within my animal clinic for several years now with outstanding results. Animals seem intuitively drawn to these gentle energies. Stressed and anxious animals become calm, arthritic and stiff animals demonstrate improved flexibility and mobility. I have seen an impressive rate of recovery after serious illness and injury and feel confident that magnetics and far infrared play a valuable role in holistic health.

What are the benefits of Magnetic therapy?
Magnetic Therapy is a natural energy that boosts health and wellbeing. Magnetic therapy increases blood flow, boosting the flow of oxygen, delivering nutrients, aiding the removal of toxins and therefore reducing pain, inflammation and improving body function at cellular level.

What are the benefits of Far Infrared Technology? (FIR)
Far Infrared is vital for the health, production and growth of all living things. FIR increases blood flow, reduces muscle spasms, removes toxins, assists in the reduction of swelling and inflammation by improving lymphatic flow and stimulating enzyme activity.

Magnetic massage is something any owner can do and all animals love. Using specially designed magnetic balls you can massage the entire body. Magnetic energy relieves tension and improves comfort and flexibility making this the perfect device to relieve everyday aches and pains for you and your four legged friend. Animal fans give their seal of approval, demonstrating extreme relaxation and appreciation when given a full body massage. No training needed - just rub and go!

My Journey

I have been working with animals for OVER 20 years. During this time my obsession for a more natural approach to animal care has been paramount. I began by rescuing and rehabilitating horses and soon found myself with a reputation for recovering the sick and injured.

Wherever I worked animals of different shapes and sizes would appear, abandoned from all corners with physical and emotional pain. So I guess you could say my path has always been clearly mapped out for me.

It was the very sad loss of my horse that sealed my incredible journey into the power of holistic medicine. Tzar was a charismatic bright bay warmblood. I was privileged to enjoy him from birth to the age of 9. A strange twist of fate brought him every possible stroke of bad luck and after a string of serious illnesses and injuries, I sadly lost him to a brain tumour. He was the kindest, most generous character I've ever had the pleasure of spending time with.

After losing Tzar, I became determined to find another way. I gave up my yard and studied holistic medicine full time. I continued to teach equitation to fund my studies. I admire and thank my students and there horses for their determination in reaching a better level of understanding and belief in me as an instructor that they would reach that place. I wish you all continued success.

After qualifying as a holistic therapist and Reiki healer, I went on to specialise in the treatment of animals. I have been fortunate to study Animal Aromatics with Caroline Ingraham, the pioneer of this fascinating subject. She is an incredible lady with an enormous wealth of knowledge.

So here I am today helping people and animals throughout the UK and Europe to lead a more natural way of life, combining Eastern philosophy with western science to enable the body to function optimally, maintaining health, vitality and longevity.

Testimonials

"Dena has helped here at REMUS for many years, her expertise and knowledge is phenomenal as is her compassion for, and understanding of, the animal's needs. Dena works regularly with our horses, ponies, donkeys, goats and sheep sharing the benefits of plant medicine with them and giving them back the opportunity to self medicate. Each animal responds so well and gets so much from all that she does for them. We have seen so many changes and improvements in both their physical and emotional well-being.

One of our biggest surprises has been the excitement from the sheep and goats, they absolutely love the herbs and relish the chance to select their own medicine, not to mention the fun, attention and the time spent on them as individuals. The results have been so powerful that we now passionately incorporate holistic therapies and a very holistic approach with all our work here at Remus. Thank you Dena for all that you share and all that you give."

"I was distraught when Inca my 9-year-old German Shepherd bitch suffered an incidence of Bloat; a life threatening condition. Her recovery was painfully slow and it became clear that there was a serious underlying problem. Despite many tests my vets could not find a diagnosis and my beautiful girl was very seriously ill.

Having seen Dena work before I decided to ask her, for her help. Kinesiology tests showed that Inca was suffering from extreme weakness in her stomach area and her immune system was failing. Dena posted a collection of natural remedies immediately and supported me by phone as I began to work with the remedies.

I was amazed at how clearly Inca knew what was needed. Day by day she selected her remedies and day-by-day she improved. Following her illness a reoccurring ear infection reared it’s ugly head, and angry hot spots appeared on her skin. Inca immediately and intuitively increased her dosage of Calendula, Rose Hip and Barley Grass. The infections cleared within just a few days, I was so thrilled not to have to use harsh pharmaceuticals with her body in such a delicate state.

Thankfully we have had no repeat of the bloat. A second kinesiology test showed significant improvement in her condition, Inca is once again the happy, glossy girl I love and know. Her physical health continues to improve and strengthen everyday. I must just thank you Dena for the totally unexpected yet extremely welcome side effect of using plant medicine. During this time of physical healing Inca has lost her life long fear of thunder, it has completely disappeared! How wonderful to see my girl sleep peacefully instead of shake as the thunder rumbles.

Thank you to both Dena and the Holistic Approach. I am so truly grateful."

Chris and Inca

"I was recommended to Dena through a colleague, as I desperately needed help to clip Wild Storm, one of my Dressage horses. In previous years sedation has been our only option, as 'Bouncer' requires clipping regularly throughout the winter competition season, I needed another plan.

Dena assessed Bouncer during the initial consultation and agreed that he was indeed genuinely scared. Over a course of four visits, Dena used a combination of training techniques, touch work and plant medicine to bring about the most amazing change. By the end of the fourth visit I had a calm and hairless horse, to this day our clipping has continued to be a pleasurable experience.

I regularly use Dena's services in the run up to big competitions, the horses respond so well to the use of massage, touch work, magnetic therapy and aromatics. They arrive at events calm yet energized, relaxed yet more than ready! The horses inspired me to care for my own health more holistically and as a team we have gone from strength to strength."

"I met Dena a number of years ago; she always had such love and compassion for all the animals she came into contact with. When I found out that Dena was involved in natural therapies to help our pets heal themselves I jumped at the chance to meet up again to see if she could help my in foal, laminitic mare.

The results were great; I was thrilled to see my mare intuitively self selecting herbs and oils to ease her discomfort, whilst I could feel confident that the gentleness of the remedies would not harm her unborn foal.

I then turned my attention to my stressed dog, the oils have really helped her, she is certainly much calmer around the house and out on walks since taking her remedies. My other horse had also had some anxiety issues, not wanting to settle to graze in the field and often showed quite ‘mareish’ behaviour. She now regularly self medicates from a selection of medicinal herbs and the problems are dramatically improved.

There is of course another bonus to all of this is. I get to do something wonderful for my animals in return for all the lovely companionship they give me, it is great bonding time going through their remedies giving them the time to select what they want and how they would like to take it. It gives me great joy and satisfaction that in this busy and challenging life our pets can still have some of the things nature intended.

Dena, I thank you and I am so glad to have caught up with you again."

Gina, Glendee Kennels and Cattery

"I moved house in 2005 and found a stray, bald and emaciated cat in my back garden. With the help of a humane trap, I managed to get her to safety despite her immense fear. I named her Guinness and within a few weeks, won her trust. We visited our local vet who was unsure if she had been burnt, had an allergy of was just so depleted, her hair had fallen out. She did some skin tests which were inconclusive and gave me a high dose of steroids to be used indefinitely. I immediately phoned Dena, someone I had known for a long time but had never used with my animals due to my job as a Veterinary Nurse and my belief that pharmaceuticals were the way to go!

Dena came out to see Guinness. She advised that I treat her holistically and suggested some simple changes to ensure that Guinness received a complete and balanced diet. We also discussed a good flea control regime and we offered her emotional support as she was obviously traumatised. Guinness is now a happy and healthy cat with a thick, complete and glossy coat.

I can only summarise by saying that Guinness has been saved a life long treatment from steroids, something that would have almost certainly shortened her life span and given her possibly fatal secondary problems. I would also like to admit in writing that I was wrong! Holistic Medicine does indeed have a immensely important place alongside Veterinary medicine. I now recommended Dena to all my clients at work and promote her whenever I can. Sometimes, seeing is believing!"

Miss S Steel (Veterinary Nurse)

"I have known Dena for many years after first meeting her at a livery yard where we both kept our horses. I asked Dena to treat my horses both with herbs and oils and massage too. I was quite a sceptic to begin with but watching how the horses reacted I started to realise there really was something in it. My mares, stallions and young stock have all benefited from Dena’s holistic approach.

After a while I started getting treatments for myself and now see Dena once a week for my own health maintenance. I would recommend Dena’s treatments to everyone be it for their animals or for themselves, you will be amazed at the positive results using such gentle natural therapies."

Case Studies

Skin Allergy

Mabel - 7yr Female Jack Russell

Mabel’s owner contacted me after a recommendation from his vet. Mabel has a grass and dust allergy causing severe inflammation and irritation of the skin. Over the past three summers, Mabel had received weekly steroid and anti-histamine injections, which had limited success.

Using Kinesiology muscle testing, I prepared a soothing skin gel to be applied topically. In addition to this, Mabel self-selected Rosehip, Calendula, and Seaweed extract which she licks on a daily basis.

Mabel and her owner, are delighted with the results. Her skin is now clear of irritation, and she is able to enjoy the summer without frustration.

Laminitis

Lucy - 11 yr Bay Mare

Lucy's owner requested my help in the prevention of laminitis as her pony had previously suffered several attacks.

During the consultation, Lucy selected a combination of detoxifying and anti-inflammatory herbs including Dandelion, Cleavers and Chamomile Flower. She also selected Spearmint, Rose and German Chamomile essential oils blended in Passion Flower macerate.

I also prepared a cooling analgesic hoof gel that could be applied twice daily.

With these natural remedies at her disposal, Lucy's owner is able to stay one step ahead of Laminitis.

Immune Insufficiency

Fi - 6yr Female Tabby

Fi suffered a severe bout of Cat Flu as a kitten; unfortunately she had not had the luxury of vaccinations. This had left her with a depleted immune system causing coughing, sneezing, eye infections and general lethargy.

Using a selection of floral waters, as these are these are more suited to felines, and offering herbal infusions such as Coltsfoot, Seaweed and Chamomile, I was able to give Fi an opportunity to relieve her symptoms.

To further boost the immune system, and purify the air, I created a blend using antiseptic and anti viral essential oils to be diffused in the room.

Whilst her symptoms did not completely disappear, they significantly reduced thus improving Fi's quality of life.
