SERVICES
Welcome to Colchester Acupuncture

Acupuncture treatment is aimed at the root of the condition as well as the main symptoms. This approach helps with resolving the problem as well as enhancing feelings of well being. Patients often notice other niggling problems resolve as the main health complaint improves.
Acupuncture originated in China and other far eastern cultures where it still features in mainstream healthcare, both as a stand-alone therapy and in combination with conventional western medicine. Acupuncture is now widely used and accepted all over the world. In the UK more and more people are finding out what acupuncture can do for them.

The aim at Colchester Acupuncture is to provide ethical, effective treatment based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine at a reasonable cost.

An Initial consultation for acupuncture usually lasts for around 1½ hours and costs £45. You will be asked a lot of questions, some of which may not seem relevant. Don’t worry, they are and they enable us to make a full Chinese medicine diagnosis and work out how best to proceed with your treatment. This session also includes treatment.

Subsequent treatments will usually last for around 1 hour and cost £35.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture works to help maintain your body’s equilibrium. It involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to regulate the flow of ‘qi’ (“chee”), your body’s vital energy. For a number of lifestyle and environmental reasons, qi can become disturbed, depleted or blocked, which can result in some symptoms of pain and illness. In certain instances, traditional acupuncture can be an effective therapy to help restore balance and promote physical and emotional harmony.

Cosmetic Acupuncture

Facial/Cosmetic treaments have become very popular largely due to the endorsement of celebrities like Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow. Tiny needles are inserted into wrinkles and specific points are used with the aim of improving the overall appearance of the face. The patients I have treated have been very pleased with the results achieved and remark on the additional benefit of an increase in general well-being. Electro-acupuncture

A machine very similar to a TENS machine is used to apply a low current to the needles. This is used particularly in relation to pain and injury to encourage and quicken healing but also to prompt the release of endorphins, the body’s natural pain killers.

Moxa

It may seem an odd concept but the use of mugwort burnt on the end of the acupuncture needles has a very warming and stimulating effect. It is used in conditions of Cold and deficiency, especially therapeutic in cases where patients decribe a “deep achiness in their bones”.

Acupressure Massage

Instead of using needles to stimulate acupuncture points, in some cases it can be better to use manual pressure. This can be used as a sole therapy or as an adjunct to treatment. Most acupuncturists are trained in a variety of massage techniques.

Cupping

Like moxa, cupping might seem a strange therapy. It is surprisingly painless and can be very useful in cases involving extreme muscle tightness and also chest infections.

Auricular acupuncture (ear acupuncture)

Ear acupuncture is used extensively in drug rehab centres particularly as it lends itself to a group setting. (See the NADA protocol)

A useful adjunct to regular acupuncture is the use of small ‘ear seeds’ which can be stuck on to ear points after a treatment session.
