Chiropractic care at C1 Chiropractic Health Centre
We successfully treat neck pain and back pain every working day. And, as a result of the considerable scientific evidence about chiropractic care, clinical guidelines in Europe and North America recommend spinal manipulation as a 'first line of defence’ in treating most spinal conditions, especially back pain. Major clinical studies comparing chiropractic care of spinal problems, such as acute back pain and chronic low-back pain, with other commonly used treatments have been carried out. This is especially so in the UK and published in the UK's leading medical journal, the British Medical Journal (BMJ). These studies have proven that chiropractic care provides excellent results and is cost-effective.

"...chiropractic has been demonstrated to be more effective for the management of lower back pain than conventional hospital outpatient care"
    British Medical Journal, 2004

"...spinal manipulation is a cost effective addition to "best care" for back pain"
    British Medical Journal, 2004

"...patients receiving chiropractic care for lower back pain were more satisfied with their care than patients receiving hospital outpatient care"
    British Medical Journal, 1995

So, if you are sufering from back pain of any sort then perhaps chiropractic is a wise first port of call.

Sports Massage and Sports Injury Therapy in Bristol
Sports Massage Sports massage is the term applied to the discipline of using deep massage for anyone suffering with problem areas of muscle and is a real benefit to all sports and exercise participants. It covers the management, manipulation and rehabilitation of the body’s soft tissue structures and has some overlap with Sports Injury Therapy covered later on this page.

Sports massage is perfect if you are suffering from a niggling injury that may be preventing you from training or enjoying every day activities. It is good for constant tired aching muscles, such as those caused by work and for anyone who wants to relieve the build up of stress that is affecting any other specific part of their body.

Sports massage is not just for sportsmen, is for anyone who is serious about their general health and wellbeing and its benefits include:
    • The relief of stiff, aching muscles, (proven to be 5 times more effective at combating fatigue than resting)
    • The stretching and broadening of muscles for maximum performance
    • The breaking down of scar tissue, improving range of movement and flexibility
    • Improvements in recovery time
    • Prevention of further injuries
    • The boosting of the immune system so decreasing the possibilities of fever, viral infections and tension headaches
    • It can increases blood flow, improving skin condition and colour
    • It stimulates circulation and lymphatic drainage
    • And improves performance, keeping muscles at their optimum condition

We have been providing care, advice and training for many of the crews of the City of Bristol Rowing Club with some success. We started looking after them four years ago and one of our Sports Injury Therapists took several circuit training sessions for them. They started to win things (which we naturally put down to all out work) and made it through to Henley Regatta two years ago and to the semi-finals last year.

Rowing is a really tough sport. It demands one of the highest levels of commitment, exceeded only by Tour de France level cycling, to achieve anything and the damage it can do to the rowers is spectacular.

We have been providing chiropractic care and sports massage for them to keep them training and winning. If we can do it for them then we can probably do it for you as well.

    Sports Injury Therapy
Sports Injury Therapy is an effective way to treat both acute and long term sporting injuries and other soft tissue injuries. The focus is mainly on sports related injury but Sports Injury Therapy is not just for sporting individuals, anyone can benefit from treatments.

Sports Injury Therapy is a part of the care we provide at C1 that is specifically concerned with the prevention of injury and the rehabilitation if an injury has occurred. The goal is to get you back to optimum levels of function and sports specific fitness irrespective of your age and sporting ability - so if you have fallen off your bike on the way to work we may be able to help.

We currently work with elite and non-elite, sporting and non-sporting individuals. We see running, rowing , riding and martial arts injuries on a regular basis and we care for a group of runners in Team Bath aiming for the Olympics.

Sports Injury Therapy includes biomechanical assessment, muscle testing, posture analysis, massage techniques and rehabilitation exercise therapy.

    Massage Therapy
At C1 we also provide massage therapy.

Your skeleton was never designed to spend hours crouched over a computer and as a result of this lack of movement your muscles can become stiff and hard. This leads to the classic 'knotty' sensation in your shoulders, which can eventually, if left untreated, lead to tension headaches, loss of quality sleep, decreased ability to deal with stress and fatigue. At C1 our experienced massage therapists will take time to discuss your lifestyle, your diet and any exercise regime to find out how best you can reduce stress and will then treat any muscular problems with deep tissue massage and accupressure.

The massage will leave you feeling rejuvenated, deeply relaxed and it breaks down fibrous knots in the muscle bringing relief from pain, stiffness and stress. It improves circulation which encourages the body to detoxify.

    Massage can also help:
      • PMT
      • IBS
      • Insomnia
      • Stress
      • Depression
      • Chronic illness & pain
      • Boost immunity
      • Pregnancy discomfort
      • Improves mobility
      • Restorative
    The Effects of Massage

A single massage is enjoyable and therapeutic, but the true benefits of massage are cumulative. Regular massage can have the effect of strengthening the body’s ability to heal, reduce stress and prevent injury through poor posture or excess tension.

    Acupuncture in central Bristol
    What is it?

It is a technique of inserting and moving filiform needles in 'acupuncture points' on the body with the aim of restoring health and well-being, so, treating pain and disease.

Acupuncture is thought to have originated in China and is now most commonly associated with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Acupuncturists tend to perceive TCM concepts in functional rather than structural terms.

    How does it work?

Researchers using the protocols of evidence-based medicingfe have found good evidence that acupuncture is effective in treating nausea and chronic low-back pain, as well as neck pain and haeadches. The Worold Health Organization, the National Centre for Complementary and Alternaltive Medicine (NCCAM) of the National Institute of Health (NIH), the American Medical Association (AMA) and various government reports have also studied and commented on the efficacy of acupuncture.

Western science suggests that there are three main mechanisms for acupuncture’s effects:
    1. Activation of the bodies opioid systems: Research has found that several types of naturally occuring opioids may be released into the central nervous system during acupuncture treatment, thereby reducing pain.

    2. Changes in brain chemistry, sensation, and involuntary body functions: Studies have shown that acupuncture may alter brain chemistry by changing the release of neurotransmitters and neurohormones. Acupuncture also has been documented to affect the parts of the central nervous system related to sensation and involuntary body functions, such as immune reactions and processes whereby a person’s blood pressure, blood flow and body temperature are regulated.

    3. Changes in blood flow: Acupuncture and Oriental medicine alters the circulation of blood to the affected area, resulting in removal of pain causing chemicals, and restoring normal function to the area being treated.
There is general agreement that acupuncture is at least safe when administered by well-trained practitioners.
    Our Approach

We will make sure that we have a full and thorough understanding of your condition before we start to treat you. We will treat you as appropriate, which usually involves acupuncture followed by Acupressure Massage or Tuina Massage Therapy.

    Who can Acupuncture help?

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to treat most musculoskeletal problems and a great deal of other problems as well.

    Spinal Rehab and Core Stability
What are we trying to achieve with Spinal

    Rehabilitation

You can leave the care of your back entirely in our hands but it will take you longer to get right and you may feel as though you have abdicated most of the control of your problem. Far better, we believe, is that we get it all working well with your help and you then keep it that way. This is why Spinal Rehabilitation is so important.

Rehab should be an essential part of your recovery process. It will help prevent reoccurrence of your problem by strengthening, and more importantly, developing stability in your back.

Rehab involves specifically designed exercises for your condition. These will be tailored to your own pretty unique problem and will be shown to you by one of our practitioners (this is an area that Sian Osborne, Ben Tolson, Elly Nashant or Katie Breeze, who are our sports injury therapists, are all really strong on). One of the most important parts of Spinal Rehabilitation is developing your Core Stability and this is covered rerally well in our web site: www.c1healthcentre.co.uk

    Pilates
“In ten sessions you’ll feel the difference, in twenty you’ll see the difference and in thirty you’ll have a new body” – Joseph Pilates

    What is it?

It is a unique system of exercises developed over 80 years ago that aims to improve strength and tone, improve posture, promote flexibility and balance. This helps create a better mind and body connection and is recommended by the chiropractors at C1 to support their work and any rehabilitation training that you have carried out at the Health Centre.

    Is it for me?

One of the many advantages of Pilates is that it is suitable for most ages and most fitness groups. It is also great for those who have been suffering from chronic low-back pain and for those who need spinal rehabilitation. If it is for Pat cash the tennis player and Liz Hurley then it has got to be for you.

    Classes

We offer a variety of mat work classes, which are core of Pilates, for all levels of ability. At C1 we book these in six week blocks and class sizes are kept small to ensure personal attention so that you don’t develop incorrect techniques which can be a problem with larger classes.

We can also book one-to-one sessions which may suit your needs and may be suggested if you need some special detailed assistance or are recovering form an illness or injury.

“It is the mind itself that builds the body” – Joseph Pilates

    Individual Lessons

Individual lessons allow you to make the improvements you seek in a private environment.
    • These can be tailored to your specific requirements
    • Lessons usually last 30-40 minutes

    Group Lessons

Group lessons are a fantastic way to learn.
They are a fun, open and safe environment where sharing and supporting is encouraged. A group dynamic is rewarding as you can commonly relate to other people´s issues. Observing others improve provides a mirror for your own progress. Group discussions are popular and thought provoking and you benefit from the “group mind”.
    • They are available for groups of up to 6 people
    • Lessons usually last 1˝ hours

    Reflexology
    What is reflexology?

Reflexology is the science of applying pressure to points on the feet to improve health. All parts of the body can be accessed through the feet and in this way we can determine what areas are under strain and require specific attention. With small movements and pressure, a reflexologist will unblock nerve pathways which stimulate circulation and aid detoxification. It will often help you become aware of your own health state and many people find it marks a turning point in how they approach their body’s needs. Reflexology is not diagnostic but is an excellent way to maintain wellbeing as its natural, safe and can be practiced on all ages.

How will I feel during and after treatment?

Each person is different and so is the treatment. Most people feel very calm, soothed and sometimes sleepy. There will sometimes be an element of discomfort but this is short lived and usually reflects the health of the receiver. As the benefits are cumulative with every consecutive treatment the discomfort decreases giving a good indication of improved circulation and lymphatic drainage.

After the treatment you may initially feel very relaxed and floaty, then over 24 hours some detox symptoms could occur: headache, tiredness, tearfulness, and thirst. This is a positive step in your body working hard to drain toxins and heal itself.

    Reflexology can help the following:
      • Stress/Panic attacks
      • Depression
      • Insomnia
      • IBS/Crohn’s Disease
      • Asthma/allergies
      • Sinusitis/Trifacial Neuralgia
      • Migraine
      • Infertility
      • Back / joint pain
      • Menstrual problems/Menopause symptoms
      • Skin complaints and many more…

    Clinical Hypnotherapy
    What is it?

Clinical hypnotherapy is a very ordinary yet incredibly powerful tool that can help you combat a wide variety of issues including anxiety, depression, generalised stress, phobias, insomnia, low self esteem or confidence and IBS to name a few. Zofie specialises in working within the areas of depression and anxiety and has a keen interest in working with busy professionals requiring stress management and or performance enhancement tools.

    What is Hypnosis?

Contrary to popular belief the state of hypnosis is a very natural and in fact an ordinary state. If you have ever driven and realised you have been on autopilot during the journey, or been so engrossed in a television programme or good book that time has flown or you failed to notice someone attempting to grab your attention, then you have already experienced a form of hypnosis!

    What is Clinical Hypnotherapy?

Clinical hypnotherapy makes use of this focused state of awareness in what can be an incredibly powerful way. Because issues such as depression, anxiety, chronic anger, stress and phobias are not things we "consciously" decide to bring into our lives it can often seem difficult to rid ourselves of them by will power, "pulling ourselves together", or simple conscious effort alone. One of the reasons that hypnotherapy can work effectively and rapidly is that it makes use of the access we acquire to the subconscious area of our mind during hypnosis.

The amazing changes this affords can lend weight to the idea that hypnosis is in some way mysterious or magical however the reality is that small changes can lead to great differences and ultimately, reducing anxiety, stress, and or depression will enable you to make informed decisions and deal with life well.

    What happens during hypnosis?

At no time during hypnosis do you relinquish control to the therapist; just as you remain in complete control when driving on autopilot you similarly do so when experiencing hypnosis. During a hypnotherapy session the hypnosis experience is invariably relaxing, rejuvenating and pleasant; this is especially noticeable for those individuals who have been suffering from stress or anxiety.

Solution focused hypnotherapy involves ensuring you, the client, are given knowledge, confidence and a level of understanding that will enable you to get what you want from your life. It does not involve digging up the past.

    Counselling
    What is counselling?

As a therapist I encourage others to make sense of what are often confusing and overwhelming human emotions. In our culture, feelings such as joy, love, and compassion are welcomed but we often feel alone with ‘unwelcome’ feelings such as anger, guilt, jealousy and despair. I believe that all feelings are part of being human. Talking through our issues can enable us to understand these feelings and help us work through them. By discovering how to connect with our inner strengths we are able to make healthier life choices.

    How can counselling help?

Professional counselling can offer support to people undergoing professional medical treatment and can be a valuable part of the ‘holistic’ mix of healthcare services to which patients can be referred.

Through our relationship we can engage in conversations that unlock emotions and behavioural patterns to achieve a greater personal understanding.

Understanding oneself can have a positive benefit by:
    • Changing unwanted patterns of behaviour
    • Discovering new coping strategies
    • Developing self esteem
    • Improving personal relationships

A counselling journey can lead to practical, emotional and behavioural solutions to health-related problems.
