Welcome to Beckenham Chiropody & Podiatry Practice
  • Established at the same location for 30 years.
  • Brian Cast, the Podiatrist, has owned the practice since 1995.
  • Mr Cast is the only Podiatrist at the practice.
  • He has been providing gentle chiropody treatments since 1993 when he qualified.
  • A specialist in the surgical correction of in growing toe nails.
  • Highly experienced in the provision of orthotics.
  • Evaluation of gait related problems such as sports injuries.

Podiatry/Biomechanics

Sometimes the structure of the foot and it's bone alignment can be responsible for painful conditions such as corns callouses, joint pains, muscle pains and strains, heel pain, arch pain and ankle problems.

Biomechanical assessment considers the body's structure and how it walks and runs. It looks for the cause of a problem and provides solutions such as custom made orthotics (arch supports) and enables the recommendation of exercises that may stretch shortened muscles, or strengthen weak ones.

Nail Surgery

A minor surgical procedure carried out using local anaesthetic.

Nails that are in-growing or very curved and thus constantly tender can be made permanently narrower or removed entirely.

There are no surgical incisions involved and so no stitches. This procedure is therefore not generally painful.

Local anaesthetic is administered to make the entire toe numb. Special instruments are used to carefully remove the unwanted section of nail and the growth matrix is treated chemically to prevent this piece of nail from growing.

The chemical treatment causes a small discharge that must be washed away daily to assist rapid, trouble free healing, which can take between four and eight weeks.

Patients are seen two or three days after surgery for the first re-dressing and then given dressings and instructed how to care for the toe until healing has concluded. They are invited to visit the practice for checks during this healing period.

Verruca Treatment

Verruca(Warts) are viral skin infections and in seven cases out of ten they will fade away without treatment.

I recommend trying simple over the counter remedies which are available from your pharmacist, or I can advise and supply such products.

The treatments carried out in this practice are more aggressive in nature to try and resolve the lesion as quickly as possible
Most commonly acid treatments are applied as they have the most predictable outcomes.

Warts can be removed using local anaesthetic and electrosurgery, but this can be a more painful treatment with no more than a 70% chance of success and the risk of scarring.

Freezing treatment can be used but I find this less successful on the thickened skin of the sole of the foot.

If you have tried self treatment come along for an appointment and let me assess which form of treatment I think most likely to be successful.
