Welcome to Oxford Transcendental Meditation Centre

Pure consciousness is the still, silent basis of successful therapies. Transcendental Meditation is the most ancient, most easily learned and most enjoyable way of gaining access to it.

Transcendental Meditation as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, is a simple, natural, effortless technique practised for 20 minutes twice daily, while sitting comfortably. It requires no belief, (you do not even have to believe it will work for you), nor any change in lifestyle or diet. It can be easily learned by anyone, regardless of age, education or background.

TM teaching is not a religion or cult and it does not affect any existing personal religious practice.

You do not need to adopt unusual postures or try to control thoughts or breathing.

The principle of effortlessness is central to the practice of Transcendental Meditation.

Transcendental Meditation has a way of giving individuals what they most need, and it does it in the most effortless and enjoyable way. Even better, TM keeps on delivering benefits right through your life; by dissolving long-held tensions and stress, it puts you in touch with your inner wisdom, providing what you need, when you most need it.

"Transcendental Meditation is more than twice as effective for relieving the mental effects of stress as all other meditation and relaxation techniques,"
Journal of Clinical Psychology 45: 957-974 (1989) & 33: 1076-1078 (1977).

With less stress, many people also report greater clarity of thought, creativity, and energy as well as a sense of well-being, peace and happiness which grows over time.

Transcendental Meditation Oxford offers authentic courses approved by the founder of Transcendental Meditation, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

For the scientifically proven benefits of Transcendental Meditation to work, the technique needs to be imparted by a trained vedic teacher, someone who has formally studied and practiced over a period of years with the late Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who founded TM, or his spiritual disciple, Maharaj Nader Ram.

It's very simple and easy to learn TM, but, just like dreaming, if you had never had a dream, it would be a delicate process to show you how to do it. So with the effortless Transcendental Meditation technique, a qualified TM teacher is necessary to lead you through the steps.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

The deeper the rest, the more dynamic the activity. The accumulated stress that is eliminated during the deep rest of Transcendental Meditation is a hindrance to creative thinking and activity. Freedom from accumulated stress allows greater achievement, more fulfilment. Transcendental Meditation is for people who want to realize more of their full potential. It is not for people who want to withdraw from life.

Regular practice of Transcendental Meditation has been shown not only to significantly reduce health care costs, and to alleviate specific disorders such as hypertension, anxiety, migraine, insomnia, bronchial asthma, ADHD and diabetes, but also to improve normal functioning, such as resistance to stressful stimuli, reaction time and athletic performance.

Some benefits, such as raising intelligence and slowing the ageing process, are unique to Transcendental Meditation. As is the proven effectiveness of group practice of TM and the advanced TM-Sidhi programme in reducing social conflict.

There are many well-researched studies showing the effectiveness of TM, including:

  • Restful deep relaxation
  • Peaceful feelings
  • Faster recovery from stress and anxiety
  • Improved blood pressure
  • Reduced insomnia
  • Clearer thinking
  • Increased creativity
  • Better relationships

Significantly, everyone who learns TM enjoys these improvements to some extent and most to a greater extent.

The reason for such a wide variety of benefits is that Transcendental Meditation improves the style of functioning of mind and body as a whole. In short, it raises consciousness.

All the mental and physical benefits of Transcendental Meditation spring from direct experience during TM of transcendental consciousness - in which mind and body naturally attain their most integrated, coherent state. Benefits in daily life are experienced from the start and are cumulative.

With regular practice, meditators report that the state of pure consciousness experienced morning and evening becomes the silent, stable basis of creative thought and activity. They begin to perform right action more spontaneously - with less internal debate and worry. They achieve more with less effort. Performance at work improves. Self-confidence increases. Personal relationships become more harmonious. They become more fulfilled, happier. Learning Transcendental Meditation is like coming home.

You can learn more about the scientific research behind Transcendental Meditation on the web at: www.t-m.org.uk The claims of the scientific research are well supported by many personal testimonials, press articles and reports, universities, reputable published science journals and information sites, ranging from VIPs and celebrities like David Lynch to ordinary people. You can read these online at www.t-m.org.uk and www.t-m.org

What you'll discover is that different individuals all have different experiences. Some find their minds become clearer, while others discover more confidence, some are better able to release stress and tension, and yet others simply enjoy the experience of greater happiness. Happiness can become normal, instead of the exception. Many people learn so that they can think more clearly, make more effective decisions and become more successful. Others learn because they want to feel happier, more self-confident and fulfilled. Some are seeking that certain 'Je ne sais quoi'.

For some, the results are almost miraculous, as if something they'd felt was missing all their lives now started to appear naturally and automatically, everyday. It's not uncommon for people who practice TM to report that "the results are wonderful". It's because of results like these that in 2009 over 5,000,000 people in the world have already learned Transcendental Meditation.

TM is a real boon for students. They report brain development, better focus, increased energy and higher grades. Brain monitoring equipment has shown a unique style of brain activity during, and after, the practise of Transcendental Meditation. This has been described as a state of "restful alertness". The TM programme has now been introduced into hundreds of schools throughout the world with exceptionally good results, including those for pupils with learning difficulties. WHAT IS TRANSCENDENTAL MEDITATION?

Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation is the most extensively researched technique for self-development. It comes from the ancient Vedic tradition of India - the oldest record of human knowledge. Veda means Natural Law. It is based on the understanding that the natural tendency of life is to evolve. The natural tendency of the individual mind is to evolve towards more and more, to realize its infinite, unbounded nature. Until it achieves this, life can be a struggle.

    Why I Teach Transcendental Meditation
    - by Oxford TM chairman Anne Marie Wilson:

"I have been a teacher of Transcendental Meditation for over thirty years. I learned TM myself because I had been suffering from anxiety and depression for several years, and I enjoyed immediate benefits. From my first meditation I started feeling happy instead of miserable, insomnia became a thing of the past and my inferiority complex gradually shrank to nothing.

"There are so many other mental and physiological developments that take place over the years when you practise TM, but I was so impressed with these initial results that I started my training to become a teacher of Transcendental Meditation within a few months of my own course of instruction, so that I could pass on the benefits to others.

"I was teaching Ballroom and Latin American Dancing when I started TM and although I have continued to do this on a part-time basis, my main focus has always been on teaching TM. Nothing gives me more pleasure than seeing others transforming their lives."

    Where Does TM Come From?

The Transcendental Meditation technique was brought to the West by His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi over 50 years ago. Maharishi means "great seer". It had been restored for practical use by Maharishi's master, Swami Brahmananda Saraswati - known as "Guru Dev" - who was Shankaracharya of north India in Jyotir Math, Himalayas. This is one of four seats in India - North, South, East, West - where the leading authorities on Vedic knowledge sit. Shankara was a renowned seer in the Vedic Tradition of Masters.

The authentic Transcendental Meditation technique is imparted in exactly the same way as it was by Vedic masters over 5,000 years ago. Adherence to the correct, age-old teaching procedure ensures the purity and effectiveness of the teaching. TM now has its imitators, including some who claim to teach "transcendental meditation" but teach nothing of the sort. Only teachers authorised by Maharishi Vedic Institute can be relied upon.

It is taught by personal instruction - by qualified teachers who have completed an extensive training programme and are registered with Maharishi Vedic Institute - and is effective from the first instruction.

    What Happens During Transcendental Meditation?

The word "transcendental" describes what happens. During Transcendental Meditation, the individual's surface thinking activity is transcended. The simple, effortless technique creates the initial conditions for transcending to take place spontaneously.

In transcending, the mind settles down to a state that is perfectly still yet alert. At the same time, the body enjoys a state of rest that is deeper and more refreshing than night sleep.

Transcending is an unfamiliar word, but everybody has experienced it. It's those fleeting moments of bliss that occur at the junction point between wakefulness and sleep, (just as you are nodding off at night), and between sleeping and waking in the morning. "That was nice!" you say, "I'll try and get back down there". But you cannot do it by trying. During Transcendental Meditation, transcending occurs repeatedly, and more deeply. And, of course, effortlessly.

During Transcendental Meditation, oxygen consumption, a prime indicator of levels of rest and activity, decreases by about double the drop that occurs during night sleep: about 16 per cent compared with about 8 per cent. This cannot be attained by effort or concentration. Only nature can do this for you.

Why does the body need less oxygen during Transcendental Meditation? Because it adopts a more energy-efficient style of functioning. The arteries expand so that more blood flows with less effort. Heart rate decreases. Brainwave activity becomes highly orderly. The volume of lactic acid, the biochemical associated with anxiety, drops markedly. Electrical skin resistance, which decreases in anxiety states, rises sharply. This integrated complex of changes cannot be brought about by individual effort.

In this state of least excitation the body automatically neutralises accumulated stress - physical abnormalities - and carries out repairs and renewals. It is the opposite of the primitive, now obsolete, fight-or-fight response, which can lead to hypertension if frequently provoked by the fast pace of modern life.

Many people think that they would be unable to sit still during meditation. However, the natural tendency of the mind is to transcend, so the settling down of both mind and body occurs automatically.

Transcending is an enjoyable experience that meditators look forward to.

    Aren't All Meditations the Same?

    There's meditation - and there's Transcendental Meditation.

During Transcendental Meditation, the individual's conscious thinking activity is effortlessly transcended and pure consciousness is experienced. It goes all by itself. This is what makes Transcendental Meditation unique. It works because it is transcendental.

Other meditation techniques try to achieve by individual effort what nature achieves during Transcendental Meditation without effort on our part.

Trying to empty the mind, trying to push out thoughts, or dwelling on thoughts, however briefly, are all common meditation techniques that actually hinder the process of transcending. They try to simulate, by concentration or contemplation, the direct experience of transcendental consciousness that occurs effortlessly during Transcendental Meditation.

Concentration forces the mind. Contemplation dwells on meaning.

It is a fallacy that mental activity - thoughts - can be quelled by mental effort. Every thought that we become aware of is already a past event. There is nothing to be done about it.

Similarly, thinking about the transcendent - or any particular state of consciousness - is not the same as directly experiencing it. A poor man does not become rich by thinking about wealth.

Mental techniques that keep the mind on the surface thinking level are at best relaxing. At worst, they make the mind lethargic and dull and can lead to headaches.

    Courses and Fees

Transcendental Meditation is taught by personal instruction by a qualified teacher registered with Maharishi Vedic Institute. The initial teaching course consists of personal instruction, usually on a Saturday, followed by group sessions on the following three consecutive days. Each session lasts about an hour and a half. Meeting times can be varied to suit the group or individuals.

The technique is effective from the first instruction, enabling beginners to meditate successfully at home from the first day. The following three days of instruction comprise basic advice about how to get maximum benefit from your meditation, an explanation of how the physiology neutralises accumulated stress, and a look ahead at what can be realistically expected of regular practice. The alternation of experience and knowledge helps to stabilize the practice.

Follow-up meetings are available for the following six months, starting with weekly meetings, then fortnightly, then monthly. Although few meditators are able to attend all the meetings, attendance does ensure that you are meditating correctly and enjoying the benefits and provides an opportunity to discuss deeper insights. A simple procedure for checking correct meditation is conducted at each meeting by the teacher and is followed by a group meditation. Checking is available to individuals, on request, both during and after the course. Thereafter, there are regular meetings at the Centre that all TM meditators are welcome to attend. There are weekend residence courses and other activities.

"I took up Transcendental Meditation 18 years ago and have been regular in my practice of the technique since then, About 18 months before this I started my career as a graphic designer in publishing, a field in which I'm still working at the moment. Looking back, I can say that besides the immediate effects such as releasing the day's stresses, it also builds up something in you over time which you have in reserve when the going gets tough. It's the best investment of time and money you can make."

"TM has made a really significant contribution to my overall health and well being and has greatly reduced my levels of stress and dependence on anti-depressants."- Colin Pollard, Bucks
