What Is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a complementary therapy with its roots in Japan. It was taught by its founder Mikao Usui in the 1920’s, as a self-healing technique, but more commonly in the West it is now used to treat others. The system is available to anyone regardless of their religious background and so you do not need to have any religious beliefs in order to benefit from the teachings and practices of Reiki.

‘All I can do is be me- whoever that is’ - Bob Dylan

The aim of Reiki is to be in a state of balance on all levels. It is accepting that life is forever in flux and learning to cope with the challenges this brings; helping you to adapt, finding out about your true priorities and values and understanding your own motivations. Reiki can promote well being through supporting you to deal with life issues such as career change, marriage, divorce, loss of a loved one or physical illness.

‘Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans.’ - John Lennon

Perhaps you have been putting off some knotty problems for a while, haven’t found a resolution to a health issue, are finding it a challenge to accept a change of direction or develop new attitudes, or you need to ‘let go’ of a difficulty from your past. Reiki will help with all of these.

How Does Reiki Work?

Many complementary therapies involve encouraging the ready flow of energy through the body. In China this energy force is called ‘chi’ and you may have heard of such techniques as Tai Chi, Chi Kung or QiGong, where controlled, graceful movements are designed to develop a balanced and strong energy reserve. Perhaps you know about Acupuncture or Shiastu (Acupressure), or Reflexology, where a practitioner manipulates energy flow through a series of meridians that run the length of your body or are reflected in your feet. Some of these therapies are now available through the National Health system as an alternative to, or in conjunction with conventional medication.

In India, the energy flow is known as Prana, where yoga techniques and breathing exercises have been developed to encourage energy flow through a series of Chakras or spinning energy centres believed to run in a line from the crown of your head to the base of your spine.

Japan called this energy Ki and in fact a common Western translation of the word ‘Reiki’ is ‘Universal Life Energy’, and Reiki deals with this same chi/prana energy to some extent. However, there is also a spiritual (but not religious) aspect to Reiki and it has some similarities to spiritual healing, particularly in how people react to receiving it. Reiki connects you to your spiritual side through your practitioner; it feels safe, relaxing, loving, nourishing and empowering. Many people think it has divine origins, seeing the energy as divine light or love, however it is religiously ‘neutral’, non-judgmental and attached to no belief system. This means Reiki is all inclusive and anyone, regardless of what they do or do not believe (even if that includes not believing in Reiki!) can benefit from Reiki.

About Aneal Reiki Healing & Jane Allen

Throughout my life and career, I have held many roles of a caring nature, most recently as a as a Teacher. Although I was happy, I found I was looking for something more. A way of being that I can only describe as ‘a state of Grace’ – an inner calm or sense of personal peace and stillness that was missing in my hectic lifestyle. And so I began my continuing personal development journey in to the world of Reiki. I am now a qualified Reiki Master, and have been practising Reiki for three years. I can trace my Reiki lineage back to Sensei and Reiki founder Mikao Usui. I hold a level 3 qualification in Anatomy and Physiology, and a teaching degree. In addition, I am a member of the Complementary Therapists Association and I hold current personal indemnity insurance, so you can come to me with complete confidence for your Reiki session. If you want to learn Reiki for yourself, I have teaching booklets, audio CDs and videos specially designed to help you develop your own practice of Reiki, and attending my courses and successfully attaining the required standard will gain you the qualifications you need to purchase the necessary insurance should you wish to become a Reiki Practitioner or Reiki Master yourself.
